Diane Janet (Clarkson) MacDonald George 'Doad' Burte Maria Payne Leonard 'Len' Mulley Regina (Berube) Collins ******************************************************************************************************* Diane Janet (Clarkson) MacDonald Born in: Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 16/12/2010 On Dec. 16, 2010, heaven rejoiced as a bell rang out to announce that another angel received her wings. Diane Janet (Clarkson) MacDonald was called home by her maker and Lord surrounded by her loving family and friends after a brief, but heroic, battle with cancer. Aside from family and community life, Diane worked for many years with the Royal Bank in Sydney Mines and North Sydney where she enjoyed her time with colleagues and customers. Diane was predeceased by her loving parents, Daniel and Annie Clarkson, as well as many beloved family members (Clarkson and Bernon). Diane is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Ian; children, Jennifer and Sean (Amy); brother, Tommy (Shirley) Clarkson; parents-in-law, Dougie and Connie MacDonald; immediate family, Stuart (Linda) MacDonald, Bill (Alice) MacDonald, Sandra MacDonald. Joined to mourn are many family and friends including, mentor and cousin, Blanche Gibbs; cousin and close friend, Janet Gordon; lifelong friends, Lois and Joe Mitchelitis and family; close friend, Cecil Clarke and family. A special thank you for outstanding care, understanding and compassion is extended to Louise McKeough and Dr. Michel McKeough as well as to the professional and dedicated staff of the Cape Breton Cancer Centre and the district health authority. Heartfelt appreciation is extended to our St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church family and friends. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation at Diane's request. A memorial service celebrating Diane's life will be held Saturday, Dec. 18 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Sydney Mines, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Marion Barclay MacKay officiating. "But those who look to the Lord will win new strength, they will soar as on eagles' wings; they will run and not feel faint, march on and not grow weary." ~ Isaiah 40:31 ****************************************************** George 'Doad' Burte Born in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 21/06/1925 Passed away in: Bridgeport, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 14/12/2010 It is with broken hearts, we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, George 'Doad' Burte , following a brief but courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday evening, Dec. 14, 2010, at his residence. At the time of his death, George was surrounded by his loving family. Born in Glace Bay, June 21, 1925, George was the son of the late Thomas and Susan (Budge) Burte. George was a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church, Glace Bay. He was a veteran of the Second World War and the Korean Conflict. George was a retired coal miner, having worked in No. 26 Colliery from 1957 to 1984. He was a hard worker who loved to shovel snow; he also enjoyed working around the yard and going to the gym. But mostly, George will be remembered as a family man. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Jean (King) Burte; daughters, Helen (Steven) Theal, Amherst, Nancy (Dougie) Demeyere, Dominion, Susan (Robert) MacAulay, Sydney; and one son, Eldon (Florence), Oromocto. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Fan Bates, Bette Bates, Vina Murphy (Terrence); special friend, Lief Morrison and his family; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Besides his parents, George was predeceased by two sons in infancy, precious granddaughter, Michaela Burte, four brothers and one sister. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Vernon Reid is Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel followed by interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. As an expression of sympathy for George, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the IWK Hospital or the Spina Bifida Association. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Norman MacPhee, is Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony's Church, Glace Bay. Interment to follow in St. Anne's Cemetery. All are welcome to join the family for a reception in the parish hall. Maria is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. The complete obituary can be viewed at www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ******************************************************* Leonard 'Len' Mulley Born in: Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 15/12/2010 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Leonard 'Len' Mulley on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, in Hillside Pines Nursing Home, Bridgewater, where he had been residing. Born in Sydney Mines, he was a son of the late J.W. and Marion (Harnen) Mulley. Len grew up in Florence, Cape Breton, where he enjoyed the companionship of his many brothers and sisters. Len joined the RCAF flying NATO missions all over the world until retirement in Greenwood, after 20 years of service. After retiring from the service, he wrote for and obtained his journeyman's electrical papers and returned to work for DND Greenwood where he finished his working career. Len was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and hunting at his camp in Middle River, Cape Breton; where he also enjoyed visiting friends and family and would take great pleasure in rounding up a good game of cards. While at home in the valley, Len also liked his cards, especially his poker night as well as tinkering with old cars. He was a real character and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Len is survived by his son, John Mulley (Susie Whynacht); brothers, John R. Mulley, Wesley Mulley, Wayne Mulley; sisters, Minnie MacLean, Mamie Johnstone. He was predeceased by his wife, Ada (Gear) Mulley; brothers, Murdock, Angus, Bill, sisters, Ina Mae, Susan, Madeline. Arrangements entrusted to Sweeny's Funeral Home, Bridgewater. A public graveside service will be 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines. Rev. David Luker officiating. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com. ****************************************************** Regina (Berube) Collins Born in: Maine, United States Passed away in: Staten Island, New York, United States Passed away on: 16/12/2010 Notification has been received of the passing of Regina (Berube) Collins on Dec. 16, 2010, in Staten Island, New York. A native of Maine, she was married to the late Sarto Collins of South West Margaree. Surviving relatives include nephews, Cecil Collins and Fr. Angus J. MacLeod and nieces, Anne Watts, Margaret MacLellan and Catherine Grant. Burial will be in New York. Her brother's obit: Rocky Mountain News (Denver, CO) September 25, 1999 * EMIL BERUBE, 90, of Thornton died Sept. 10. Services were Sept. 16, with burial at Fort Logan National Cemetery. Mr. Berube was born in Soldier Pond, Maine, on Jan. 25, 1909. He married Ellen Cronin, 1935. He served in the Air Force. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.
