Walter Horton Lorne Currie Thomas McNeil Mary 'Tootsie' McIsaac David Latham Margaret 'Peggy' Dykes Ruth (Millard) Rogers William Andrew Clarke ******************************************************************************************************* Walter Horton Born In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Prime Brook, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 27/05/2011 It is with heavy hearts that we the family announce the passing of Walter Horton on Friday May 27, 2011 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Leonard and Martha Horton. Walter was employed with the Sydney Steel plant for over 39 years until his retirement. He served with the armed forces for the duration of World War II. In his pastime, he was a musician being able to play six different instruments including piano, guitar, French horn, harmonica trumpet and accordion. He was a member of the Sydney City Band. For many years he played in the orchestra at the Jehovah Witness conventions. Walter was a faithful member of the Sydney congregation for 56 years. He had a strong belief in the promise that his God has made that there will be a future of no suffering and no death. Rev. 21:4 Walter is survived by his two sons, Daniel 'Danny' (Deborah Lynn) Horton, Prime Brook, Leonard (Minerva) Horton, Mexico; five grandchildren, David, Edward, Miquel, Natalie, and Donatela; three great grandchildren, Amadeaus, Azteca and Nubia as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Catherine; son Daniel Leonard; his four sisters, Ruth, Sady, Jenny and Dorothy. Thank you to the County Homemakers, for the wonderful care provided to Walter over the years, especially Mary (Difkavio) Turbett. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, May 30, 2011 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, 786 Alexandra St., Sydney officiated by Mr. Jason Diljohn there will be a reception to follow. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Š. **************************************** Lorne Currie Born In: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 25/05/2011 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Lorne Currie, Rockdale Avenue, Glace Bay, at the VG Hospital in Halifax on May 25, 2011, with his family by his side. Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of Kay (McIntyre) and the late Joe Currie. Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, the former Josephine McDonald; son, Christopher; daughters, Jessica and Hilary; and granddaughter, Alyssa. He is also survived by sisters, Morah, Halifax and Maria (Evans), Edmonton; several first cousins and many close friends. Lorne was an avid sports fan; and played hockey since a child. He played golf with his friends in the summer months; he loved his Montreal Canadians and Boston Bruins. Lorne also loved music; and spent many happy hours listening to different artists. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Curry's Funeral Home, Glace Bay. The funeral mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Anne's Church with Father Leo Boone officiating. Burial in St. Anne's Cemetery. Family will be at the church at 9 a.m. to receive friends. Tom is survived by his loving wife, Mary; son, Thomas and daughter-in-law, Roseanne, both of Calgary; daughter, Katherine, Glace Bay and his six grandchildren, Ivy, GT (George Thomas), Chloe, Marie, Christopher, Devon and Lincoln. Tom also leaves behind his brothers, John, Francie, Mickey, Billy, Anthony, Darrell and sisters, Tina, Donna, Mary and Toni. Tom was predeceased by his mother, Margarot Carson (McWhirter) McNeil; his father, Daniel Francis McNeil; brothers, George, Dan Archie, Donnie, Robert, Jimmy and sisters, Peggy, Mary Evarista, Debbie and Mazie. Tom's favorite place was home spending quality time with his grandchildren and family. He liked to go fishing and do fly tying which he did for his many friends. His love for God enabled him to donate his organs and skin so that many people could benefit and have a better life. His mom always said "Your heart is as big as a mountain". Tom, We will always love you and we will miss your big smile and your tender heart. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Allan and Mary Ann (McIsaac) McIsaac. Tootsie was a member of the former St. Agnes parish, currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard and the New Waterford Pensioners' Club. She was employed as a factory worker and waitress for over thirty years while living in Toronto. Tootsie loved playing darts, listening to music, dancing and going for long drives. She also cherished her Sunday family gatherings where she would have tea and something sweet for all who arrived. Surviving are sons, Allan (Lucy), Toronto, Ont., David, Norwood, Ont.; brothers Allan 'Allie' (Linda), New Waterford, Ray (Olive), Glace Bay; Archie (Sue), Joe, both of Hamilton, Ont.; sisters, Gloria (Andrew), Lorraine (Ray), both of New Waterford; sister-in-law, Henrietta McIsaac, Scotchtown; many nieces, nephews and relatives in Inverness; grandchildren, Jessica and Christopher; best friends, Marie Desveaux, who called every night and said, 'What are you doin?', Donna Ropek and Catherine Smith. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Ernest Frederick and Grace (MacMillan) Latham. David was chair of the Property Committee and past Elder of First United Church, Sydney. After 31 years of service in the Engineering Department at Nova Scotia Power, he remained active and enjoyed traveling, especially with the gang to Cuba, restoring antique cars with his eldest son, quality time with the grandchildren, and spending free time at the bungalow. Surviving are his devoted and loving wife, Lorraine (Theuerkauf); sons, Allan (Brenda), Sydney, Stephen, Ottawa and Jonathan, Halifax; sister, June MacDonald, Sydney; grandchildren, Justin, Jordan David and Mikayla; four nieces, two nephews, aunts, uncles and many cousins. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at First United Church on Tuesday 2 p.m., with Rev. Wade Reppert officiating. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca. ******************************************* Margaret 'Peggy' Dykes Passed Away In: Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Passed Away On: 17/05/2011 Margaret passed away May 17, 2011 in Victoria, B.C. She was born in her family home at Munro's Point, Cape Breton to Captain Angus and Mary Carmichael. At a young age she often travelled with her family on her father's schooner 'The Ambition'. Her sea-faring family and Scottish heritage influenced her long and well-lived life. In 1937 Margaret graduated from Normal College in Truro, N.S. She was a highly regarded school teacher who, during the war, changed careers and worked as an inventory clerk at the Halifax dockyards. There she met and married Lt. Cmdr. Randle Dykes. They settled in Baddeck, N.S. where they raised their three children, Heather (Lloyd) MacInnes, John (Margot) and Randle (Patty). Margaret moved to Victoria, B.C. with her husband and sons in 1964 when Randle became captain of the weathership CCGS St. Catharines. Her husband, Capt. Dykes passed away in 1999. Margaret was also predeceased by her sister, Muriel Bethune; brothers, Hector and Donald Carmichael and a great-grandson, Noah. Left to mourn her loss are her three children, her grandchildren, Lloyd Michael (Trina), Megan (David) MacInnes, Meadow, Allan and David (Cori) Dykes. Also missing Margaret will be six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, and her brother-in-law, Normie Bethune. A Service of Remembrance will be held at St Ann's Bay United Church at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2011. After a brief career in engineering, Bill completed a notable career in business management on Bay Street, Toronto. Predeceased by wife, Pat, brothers, Neil, Malcolm, Donald and niece, Kimberley.
