Mike was born in Hamilton, Ont., to the late Joseph Patrick and Agnes (Robinson) Ferns. Upon completion of his education, Mike joined the Royal Canadian Navy, during which time he met and married his lifetime companion, Stella (McGee) Ferns. Mike's professional career was one of great variety; RCN for eight years; safety foreman at the heavy water plant, Port Hawkesbury; safety instructor for the oil rigs. Moving to Dartmouth in 1986, he then worked as safety inspector for the Department of Labour until his retirement. Mike was devoted to his family and friends. His interest in others was evident in his volunteer community work. Mike served as cub master, refereed Strait Minor Football, he was a first aid instructor for many years, and he sat on the board of the Port Hawkesbury Housing Commission. Mike more recently was honoured by the Royal Canadian Legion for his 40 years of community service and received a lifetime honorary member of the Knights Of Columbus. Mike is survived by and will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 47 years, Stella (McGee) Ferns; sons, Michael (Giselle) Ferns and their children, Jenna and Jamie, all of Port Hawkesbury; Christopher, Dartmouth; daughter, Coleen (David) Gillis and their children, Jake and Jeri-Ellen, all of Dartmouth; several nieces and nephews; sister, Josephine (Ron) Eady; Susan (Joe) Green, all of Ontario. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Catherine Fisher. The family would like to thank Dr. Peter MacAulay, VON, Always Home Care and Palliative Care for their kindness and compassion during Mike's illness. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Cole Harbour Funeral Home. No visitation by request. Funeral mass will be held 2 p.m., Saturday in Blessed Pope John XXIII Roman Catholic Church, 35 Colby Dr., Dartmouth. Reception to follow in church hall. Samantha attended Peter Pan Daycare; nicknamed "Miss Attitude" she made a lasting impression on everyone she met. She loved to go "tubbin" and loved going to Louisbourg with her Nanny and Papa, and to Balls Creek with Grammy and Grampy, Auntie Emily and Teilah 'Tata' and uncle Blake. The water, boats and cats were a few of Samantha's favourite things. Samantha is survived by her loving mother, Megan MacDougall (Kiernan Bishop); her grandparents, Susan and Blane Perry; uncles, Chris and DJ. She is also survived by her father, Brian Gouthro (Jennifer Wall); sisters, Arianna and Chasity; ,grandmother, Debbie Gouthro; aunt, Lisa MacNeil (Keith); great-grandmother, Gertrude Gouthro; and many other relitives. Donations in Samantha's memory can be made to the Children's Wish Foundation ***************************************** Mary Fisher Born In: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Ben Eoin, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 25/05/2011 Mary Theresa Fisher of Ben Eoin passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, May 25, 2011. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (MacDonald) Fisher. Mary is survived by a number of cousins including Wayne Fisher, Glace Bay, Angela and Glenn MacPhee, formerly of Glace Bay, and John and Dorothy MacDonald, Sutter Creek, Calif. Mary was born in Glace Bay, and had lived in Ben Eoin since 1966. Following graduation from Glace Bay High School, Mary attended Mount St. Bernard College in Antigonish, and upon returning to Glace Bay was employed by the Royal Bank. She served in a variety of capacities for 28 years with the Royal Bank in both Glace Bay and Whitney Pier. Throughout her retirement years Mary was actively involved in music. She formed a ladies choral group called Belles of St. Mary's which served as the choir for St. Mary's Church in East Bay until the early 90s. The Belles also provided entertainment for nursing homes in the Sydney area as well as door to door carolling at Christmastime in the East Bay area. She was a longtime member of St. Mary's parish CWL and in her retirement years served as organist for St. George's Anglican Church for a period of 15 years. Mary, a lover of animals, was a founding member of the Cape Breton Branch of the SPCA and served that organization well in a number of areas including president. In her later years Mary devoted her time to her garden and especially her beloved dog 'Precious.' Mary was fortunate to have special caregivers who allowed her to remain safely in her home fo the past several years. Visitation for the late Mary Fisher will be today (Thursday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel continuing Friday after 12:30 p.m. in the funeral home prior to funeral mass at 2:30 p.m., Friday in St. Mary's Church, East Bay, Rev. Born in Florence, Cape Breton, N.S., she was the daughter of the late John James Howatson and Annie Mae (nee Stubbert) Howatson. She is survived by her brother, John James, St. Catharines. Anne was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Andrew McCormick, her sisters, Donna Marie and Catherine Stella and her brothers, John Robert and Harold as well as her late husband's parents, John Leonard McCormick and Theresa Margaret McCormick (nee MacDonald). Cremation has taken place. Born in North Sydney, Stephen was the son of Gordon and Joan (Bagnell) MacFadden of Georges River. Steve was co-owner and operator of Greg & Steve's Auto Repair on King Street, North Sydney. His dedication and passion for the auto service industry led to his 35-year career as a Red Seal auto technician which included over 25 years with his business partner Greg Taylor. Steve enjoyed camping and spending time with family and camping friends, especially close friends Lori and Bobby. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Besides his parents, Joan and Gordon, he is survived by his wife, Frances (McKinnon); his daughter, Valerie (Rickey) Targett and his son, Michael; his two grandchildren, Logan and Bailea; his brother, Brian MacFadden (Sharon) and sister, Brenda MacFadden (Darren) and several nieces and nephews. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of Jeanette (Pirotte) MacEachern (Willie Pembroke) and the late Harold MacEachern. Glenn had many jobs, most recently working as a bartender at the Army and Navy and was always ready to lend an ear. In earlier years he was a member of 35 Sydney Service Battalion and was still an active member of the Army and Navy and New Waterford legion. He enjoyed fishing and going for long drives, was an animal lover and will be missed by his pal 'Buddy,' the cat. Glenn is survived by his friend and partner, Beverly Kavanaugh; Bev's son, Robbie, who thought of Glenn as his father; Robbie's children, Paige and Chloe, who were very special to Glenn and their mother Angela; brothers, Terry (Val), Brian (Karen), Bernie (Sharon), Michael (Janie), Harold (Tara); sisters, Evelyn Joanne (George) and Janet (Parker); Bev's sister, Linda (Jack) Fowler; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his father, he was also predeceased by brother, Bradley. Born May 8, 1948, in Sydney, she was the daughter of Mary Richardson and the late Clarence Richardson. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca. *************************************** Sr. Magdalene Lichacz Born In: Oakshela, Saskatchewan, Canada Passed Away In: Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 23/05/2011 Sr. Magdalene Lichacz, formerly Sr. Teresa Alban, 90, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the motherhouse, on Monday, May 23, 2011, in the 70th year of her religious life. Born in Oakshela, Sask., and baptized Madeline Evangeline, she was the daughter of John and Mary (Wyzoski) Lichacz. Sr. Magdalene entered the Sisters of St. Martha on August 15, 1939, pronounced her first vows on February 15, 1941, and pronounced her final vows on August 14, 1944. Sister worked in household management within various institutes owned or managed by the Sisters of St. Martha. She received training and certificates in Home Nursing, Hospital Housekeeping, Laundry and Service Management. During her years of active ministry she served in Nova Scotia at Bethany, St. Martha's Hospital, and Little Flower Institute in Bras d'Or. From August 1944 to July 1958 Sister Magdalene directed the farm and gardens at Bethany. In Alberta, Sister Magdalene served at Mineral Springs Hospital in Banff and St. Michael's General Hospital , Martha Centre and St. Monica Convent in Lethbridge; in Saskatchewan, she ministered at St. Michael's Hospital, Broadview and St. Peter's Hospital, Melville; Sister also served at St. Pius X Seminary in Ottawa. Sr. Magdalene was the sixth youngest in a family of 15 brothers and sisters. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by six brothers, William, Lawrence, Martin, John Joseph, Leonard and Aloysius and by six sisters, Kay Pasnak, Rose Marie Kardash, Frances Gillies, Anne Zaleski, Nancy Maier and Sr. Pauline Lichacz, CSM. Sr. Magdalene is survived by one brother, Dominic, and one sister, Marie Arklie. The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning Friday, May 27, 2011 at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held on that same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel. She loved playing her guitar and entertaining her many friends at the Radio Club. Shelly will be dearly missed by her loving family which includes; father, Patrick Casey, daughters, Taylor (Scott), Jessica (David), precious grandson, Ryder, brother, Sean Casey (Amy), beloved companion and dear friend, Harry Murphy.
