Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Victor and Grace (Miller) Gilmet. Shirley was a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church, Glace Bay. She graduated from Normal School, Truro, and taught in the Stirling, Malcolm Munroe and Riverview High School. Shirley belonged to the Glace Bay Pensioners Club and the Army/Navy/Airforce, Glace Bay. She loved playing cards, shooting darts, writing letters to family and friends and going shopping. But mostly, Shirley will be remembered as a loving and compassionate mother. Shirley is survived by her daughter, Debbie (Gerald Wadman), Glace Bay; two stepdaughters, Ann Marie (John), New Waterford, Lucille (Joe), Ontario; two brothers, Wilfred, Glace Bay, William (Margie), Ontario; and one sister, Joyce (Bob), Winnipeg. Also surviving is Shirley's grandchild, Shannon (Vaughn) Ross, Main-a-Dieu; one great-grandchild, Jeremy McLean, Glace Bay; many nieces, nephews, special niece, Valerie and special friend, Butch Jillett. Shirley was predeceased by her first husband, Earl James Morrison, second husband, James Daniel Aucoin, grandson, Bobby Wadman, four sisters, Alma, Joan, Eva, Rosie and two brothers, Roy, Gordon Victor. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service is Friday morning at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Anglican Church, Glace Bay, with Rev. Vernon Reid officiating. Following the service, all are invited to join the family for a reception in St. Mary's Hall. Interment will be at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. As an expression of sympathy for Shirley, memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Diabetes Association of Nova Scotia. Sandra was born in Glace Bay. She was the daughter of the late Dan and Margaret (Nicholson) MacKeigan and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Sandra attended Mount Allison University where she received a bachelor of music. While raising a family of eight children she taught music in elementary schools in Cape Breton County and the City of Halifax. Before retiring in 1989 she worked with the marketing department of the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism. Sandra loved playing the piano and leading singalongs with family and friends. She was happiest surrounded by her children and grandchildren. An avid reader, Sandra enjoyed discussing current affairs and politics. She is survived by her children, Eric, Wendy, Deborah, Chris, Dana (Brett Clements) of Dartmouth, Ann (Carm DeCicco), Toronto, and Glen (Cindy), Bathurst, N.B. She is also survived and fondly called Grammy by her grandchildren, Bill, Jennifer, Brian, Nicholas, Novela, Megan, Melissa, Robert, Jamie and Johnny and her great-grandchildren, Garrett, Decon, James and Aubri. She was predeceased by her husband, Victor, son, Timothy and sister, Catherine Ruth 'Billie' (Jacouzzi). Sandra was a resident of Oceanview Manor in Easter Passage and received wonderful care by their dedicated staff. Special thanks to the staff at Oceanview Manor. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary (MacDonald) McLellan. She was an outstanding scholar and remained an avid reader throughout her life and she was member of St. Leonard's parish. She was predeceased by stepsisters, Mary Anne (John) and Catherine, sisters, Marie, Jessie (John A.), Annie, Bernadette, in infancy and brother, John (Agnes). Cremation has taken place and a funeral mass to celebrate Laurentia's life will be held Thursday, May 5 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard's, Mount Carmel Avenue and a luncheon to follow at the KOC Hall. He was 56 years old. After 25 years, John recently retired from the Horizon Achievement Centre. John enjoyed bowling, darts, pool and a cup of coffee or a pint with friends. John had a passion for music. He loved to sing, dance and often expressed life through the lyrics of a song. John was predeceased by his parents, D. Frank and Margie MacKay. He will be deeply missed by his family, Sheila (Doug) Morrison, Dartmouth, Katie (Craig) Fraser, Burlington, Shauna (Ron) Wong, San Diego, Marylu (Nate) Ryant, Kamloops; stepsister, Starr Comitini, Montreal; and also nephew, Will Fraser and niece, Kenzie Morrison. Vernon Reid officiating. ***************************************** Margaret (Burns) Whitty Passed Away In: Baddeck, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 02/05/2011 Margaret Mary (Burns) Whitty, 73, of Baddeck and formerly of Antigonish, passed away Monday, May 2, 2011, at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, after a long battle with cancer. She was the daughter of the late Sanford and Mary (Barrington) Burns. She was a member of St. Michael's parish, Baddeck, and former member of St. Ninian's parish, Antigonish. She founded Mary Pat Realties, Antigonish, which she operated until her illness in 1994. She was a past president of the Highland Real Estate Association. During her years in Antigonish she served her community on a number of boards and was involved in the early years of Antigonish Food Bank committee. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Walter Whitty; four daughters, Ann Marie, (Carl) Morris, St. Andrew's, Cathy (Everett) Lamey, New Victoria, Elizabeth (Joey) Guthro, Antigonish, Mary (Roddie) MacIntosh, Springfield; two sons, Walter Whitty (Lisa), Port Hawkesbury, Steven Whitty, Winnipeg. She was the grandmother to 14 grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Elsie (Gordon) Heading, Sydney, Hilda Burns, Halifax, Dianne (Jacques) Senechal, Halifax, Theresa (Steve) Whelan, Edmonton; brothers, John (Arlene), Calgary, Colin (Lynne), Calgary, Harry, Westmount. Born in Whitney Pier, she was the daughter of the late John Robert 'Jack' and Margaret Johnson. Gladys was a member of Trinity United Church, Whitney Pier and a life time member of the United Church Women Bethany Unit. She was an elder, a Sunday school teacher and served on various committees within the church. Her grandchildren have many fond memories of sleepovers at Nanny and Poppa's home in the Pier. Gladys is survived by her daughter, Glenda (Paul) MacDonald, Coxheath, N.S.; grandchildren, Scott (Anne) MacDonald, Nadine (Jamie) Chiasson, Cynthia (Shawn) Boutilier, Bryan (Amy) MacDonald, Keith MacInnis and Glenda MacInnis; great-grandchildren, Holland, Jayden, Jared, Jack, Xander and Ciana. Gladys was predeceased by her husband, Donald MacInnis; son, Kevin (Shirley) MacInnis; brothers, Neil (Gloria) Johnson and John Johnson. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A funeral service will be held at a later date.
