Mansfield Born In: Newfoundland, Canada Passed Away In: Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 07/05/2011 Russell Mansfield, 92, a former longtime resident of Whitney Pier, was called to his heavenly home Saturday, May 7, 2011, at the Glace Bay Hospital, with his loving daughters and a great caretaker by his side. Born in Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Archibald and Susan (Travis) Mansfield. Serving overseas in Italy with the Cape Breton Highlanders during the Second World War, Russell was a proud life member of the Royal Canadian Legion branch 128, Whitney Pier, and Salvation Army, Sydney. He enjoyed 31 years of retirement, after leaving the coke ovens department at Sydney Steel. He is survived by his daughters, Phyllis (Wayne) Bennett, Sydney, Rosie (Emilien) Theriault, Halifax, Bonnitta (Frank) Corbett, Sydney, Judy (Wes) Nichols, Sydney, and Kathy Hindy, Newfoundland; sister, Dorothy Downey; brother, Heber; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, Russell was predeceased by his wife, Freda, sister, Annie and brothers, Chess and George. Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 11 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will take place Thursday, 11 a.m. at the Salvation Army Sydney Community Church with Capt. Born in Sydney, Aug. 8, 1945, Biff was the son of the late Neil and Rose MacNeil. Biff was a kind and gentle soul who loved life. He enjoyed fishing, tying flies, watching wrestling and doing puzzles. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends who he loved dearly. He also had a love of music which inspired by his musical gift of playing guitar. In earlier years Biff worked for Coca Cola Bottling in Sydney, N.S. He also was a professional painter by trade and 'Mr. Fix It' in anything he did. He will be sadly missed by soulmate and best friend, Julia MacDonald; and her children, Kirk (Karla), Lori (Darryl) and Ryan (Alicia); special son, John (Lydia and family); daughter, Leanne (Kirt) and son, Neil MacNeil; special grandson, Brendon Hewer, granddaughter, Lilly MacIsaac (his angel), as well as several other grandchildren. Biff is also survived by sisters, Alice (Dan) Planetta, Mary (Derrick) Coates, Marjorie (Jessie) Vienneau, Donna (Francis) Aucoin and Sharon Chipman; brothers, Alexander MacNeil and Scott (Ann) MacNeil; as well many other extended family members. Biff was predeceased by stepson, Glen, brother, Richard 'Butch' Chipman and sister-in-law, Sharon MacNeil. Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Jerry and Regina (Vansfield) Hogan. Dutchie was a member of the Parish Church of St. Leonard, New Waterford, and was a miner at Lingan Colliery for 24 years until his retirement. In earlier years, Dutchie enjoyed playing darts at the Army, Navy, Airforce. He was considered a great outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish and travel through the woods on his four-wheeler. Music also played a large role in his life and it was evident when he was near; you could always hear him singing a tune in the background. Dutchie had an aura about him and was considered the life of the party when he arrived. He was truly most passionate about his family and would include them in his outdoor adventures whenever possible. He loved his grandchildren, who referred to him as Papa, and enjoyed taking them on hikes, trips to Mira, and occasionally on the back of his four-wheeler trailer for drives around the yard. A great many memories were made and he will never be forgotten. Surviving are his wife, Donna (Aucoin), Scotchtown; daughter, Laurie Hogan; sons, Ronnie (Tanya) Hogan and Jamie (Patsy) Hogan, all of New Waterford; brother, Michael Hogan, Albert Bridge; sisters, Helen Totten, New Waterford, Leona (Real) Lapointe, Montreal; eight grandchildren, Rebecca, Matthew, Jessica, Kaity, J.J., Jeffrey, Victoria, Landen. Besides his parents, Dutchie was predeceased by brothers Jerry, Joseph and Daniel, sisters, Mary and Linda. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. Beatty passed away Saturday, May 7, 2011, in the An Cala unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family after a brief, but valiant battle with leukemia. Born in Glace Bay, Beatty was the oldest child of the late Art and Elizabeth (Poirier) Sharpe. Beatty was a beautiful woman who enjoyed bingo, playing cards, game shows, and laughing, but most importantly, spending time with her family. Beatty is survived by her special niece and best friend, Laura Lee, with whom she resided; as well as her six loving children, Roberta, Colorado, Lorraine (Wayne), Alberta, Wayne, at home, Geraldine, British Columbia, Corinne (Greg), Ontario, Natalie (Tom), Ontario; sisters, Donna (Ken) Cooke, Bedford, Frances Miller, Ontario; brothers, Jerry (Pat), Port Hawkesbury, Ray, at home, David (Glenda), Glace Bay, Bernie (Helen), Glace Bay; sister-in-law, Ester, Glace Bay; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, chosen family, Mary 'Twink' and John Taylor, Glace Bay, and children, AJ (Chad), Alberta, and Diana (Jason) Sheppard, Glace Bay; and many loving nieces and nephews. Born in Florence Nova Scotia on June 29, 1926 he was the son of the late Hugh and Catherine (Dickson). Beloved husband of Rose (Baxter). Dear father of Carson and his wife Patrice and Earl and his wife Roxanne. Loving grandfather of Tanya, Ramona, Sasha, Darren and Amanda and great grandfather of Aliyah, Kyra, Karter, Aaron, Tyler and Kaylee. Hugh is remembered by his brothers John and Thomas and sisters Margaret, Ruby, Rodney, Mayaudry and Althea. Predeceased by his parents, six brothers and three sisters. Hugh was employed as a coal miner in #3 Florence and #1 Sydney Mines and a deep sea merchant seaman. He retired from Ontario Hydro as an investigator after 19 years of service after his military career. Hugh served for 21 years 1944-1946 with the 3rd Battalion, 6th division, West Nova Scotia Regiment, 1953-1972 with Canadian Provost Corps, Military Police, 2nd Airborne Battalion (P.P.C.L.I), 1954-1955 Belgium, Germany with North American Treaty Organization (N.A.T.O), 1971 with the United Nations Peace Keeping Force (U.N.) in the island of Cyprus, Discharged in 1972 with the rank of Sergeant. Hugh was awarded C.V.S.M.---V.M.---N.A.T.O.---U.N.---CD and Paratroopers Wings. Hugh was a veteran of W.W.II. He served in Germany and Cyprus. Life member and Past President of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 114 Oakville.
