Ray Fahey died Wednesday of cancer at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. He was 69. Fahey worked 18 years as photographer at the Cape Breton Post before retiring in 2006. Prior to joining the Post, he worked with Abbass Studios for many years and was the usual photographer for students to see at local schools when it came to school picture day. "He was very passionate about his work," said Post Publisher Anita Delazzer. "He did whatever he could to make sure he got the perfect shot." It was many perfect shots over his career that resulted in numerous awards for Fahey's work, including two Atlantic Journalism Awards. He was named photographer of the year in 1975. " We were deeply saddened to hear the news today about his death and our condolences go out to his wife, Bernadette, and his children, particularly Mickey, who is also on staff here at the Post as an advertising sales representative," said Delazzer. Family was a core value for Fahey, who, when asked about his successes, would always attribute that success to the love and support of his wife, Bernadette. The couple were married for 49 years and raised five children. Fahey was an accredited photographer in journalism, portraiture, candid, and casual artistry. He also taught the art of photography. Wedding photos were also a specialty of Fahey's. " You couldn't help but like Ray. His eternal optimism and quick wit always made working with him a pleasure," said Steve MacInnis, union president at the Post. "Ray always had a way of seeing the good side in business that at times focuses on the bad. He was always respectful of the people he photographed and in some cases became life long friends with those individuals." It was that respect and general kindness that resulted in one of Fahey's greatest surprises. At the time of his retirement, he was assigned a picture at a local school and when he arrived, he was touched to learn the event he was to cover was for him. "He's so sweet to us," said teacher Imelda Grant. "He's got kindness, compassion and a great understanding of kids." Another tribute Thursday came from Cape Breton Regional Municipality Mayor John Morgan. "Condolences to the family and coworkers of legendary Cape Breton Post photographer Ray Fahey," said the mayor. Among his other passions, Fahey loved animals and carpentry and had a special interest in customizing cars. The remains are resting at Chant's Funeral Home on Alexandra Street from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, with a service in the home chapel on Sunday at 3 p.m. ******************************************************************************************************* Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CBGHA http://www.cbgen.org
