Lesley Moore MacMillan Mabel Florence Whiting Patrick Vincent 'Vince' Petrie John Kenneth 'Johnny' MacKay Edwin 'Ed' Fraser Champion Dan Yakimchuk ******************************************************************************************************* Lesley Moore MacMillan (Died May 3, 2011) Lesley Moore MacMillan 96, Sydney Born Margaret Lesley White in Charlottetown, P.E.I., Feb. 7, 1915, daughter of Thomas White and Gladys Watson. She is survived by her daughter, Sandy Moore McPhail; her son-in-law, John McPhail and her beloved grandson, Iain McPhail. She married Bruce Stewart Moore in November 1939 and came to Sydney as a young bride. She was widowed in May 1961 and later, married Allison 'Al' MacMillan, City of Sydney Deputy Fire Chief, who predeceased her in June 1997. 'Les' or 'Grandma' as she was known, is unforgettable to her family and friends. Her love, kindness, compassion, and determination will be remembered but it is her laughter and joy of life that were her unique gifts to those who loved her. Special thanks to the neighbours of Cusack Drive and friends whose kindness and help enable her to have the independence she wanted. Thanks also to the doctors and staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their care and respect. Visitation Friday, May 6 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the S.W. Born on August 16, 1920 in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Reuben and Harriet Wadman. Mabel was a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church and was active in the Senior Guild for many years. She loved the time she spent as a nurse's aide at the Glace Bay General Hospital. Mabel is survived by her sons; Ron (Rita), Dartmouth, Keith (Maurna), Tom (Lisa), Glace Bay, sister, Lex Davies, grandchildren; Jeff (Paige) Whiting, Dawn (Carl) Comeau, Ian (Pamela) Whiting, Kristin Whiting (Jack Chisholm), Collette Whiting (Steve Gardin), Cheryl Whiting (Terry Poole), Shane Whiting, Trevor Whiting, Kyle Whiting and Katherine Whiting and great grandchildren; Bailey and Madison Whiting, Mia Comeau, Savannah Gardin and Ava Whiting. Besides her parents, Mabel was predeceased by her husband Thomas, by sisters, Lillian Lawless, Annie Louise Wadman, Marjorie Payne, Winnie Walker, Audrey Rowe and by great grandson, Oliver Whiting. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving father, brother and grandfather on Tuesday, May 3, 2011, in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, NS. Vince was born February 21, 1935 in New Waterford; he was a son of the late Patrick and Greta (Pendergast) Petrie of Lingan. He was an avid trapper and a big Montreal Canadiens fan. Vince was working for Canada Post as a rural route driver in West Bay Road and surrounding communities at the time of his diagnosis of brain cancer. He greatly enjoyed this job during this time in his life especially giving a little extra attention to the seniors of his community. He obtained his Millwright trade while serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Most of his career was at the Heavy Water Plant, Point Tupper. He was very active with the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers Union where he served as the president from 1970-1985 and served as an executive board member for the Atlantic region with the Energy and Chemical Workers union. He is survived by his sons, Michael (Lorrie), Grand Anse; Brian, Troy; daughters, Angela Grimard (Marc), Prud' Homme, Saskatchewan and Patricia Tait (Bill), Ellershouse; grandchildren, Kaleb, Brett, Breigh, Mathieu, Joel and Mikalya, step-grandchildren, Joshua, Michael and Monica MacNeil, sisters, Pauline Rodgers (Tommy), Greenwood; Patricia, Calgary. Vince was predeceased by an infant brother, Toby. A special thank you to all that cared for Dad at Strait Richmond Hospital especially Dr. Collins, Dr. Pluta and the sitters. He was 56 years old. After 25 years, John recently retired from the Horizon Achievement Centre. John enjoyed bowling, darts, pool and a cup of coffee or a pint with friends. John had a passion for music. He loved to sing, dance and often expressed life through the lyrics of a song. John was predeceased by his parents, D. Frank and Margie MacKay. He will be deeply missed by his family, Sheila (Doug) Morrison, Dartmouth, Katie (Craig) Fraser, Burlington, Shauna (Ron) Wong, San Diego, Marylu (Nate) Ryant, Kamloops; stepsister, Starr Comitini, Montreal; and also nephew, Will Fraser and niece, Kenzie Morrison. He had resided at Taigh Na Mara Veterans Nursing Home in Glace Bay for a short time prior to his death. Born in Sydney, Ed was a son of the late Horatio and Margaret (Cuff) Champion. Ed was employed at Sydney Steel for 42 years and after retiring spent much of his spare time at his cottage in Englishtown. For many years he was an avid bowler and a faithful Royal Canadian Legion member, Branch 128. He was also involved in the Naval Veterans Association, having served in World War II, in the Canadian Navy. Ed enjoyed people and had numerous friends and associates. He also donated much of his time to volunteer projects such as Remembrance Day events, Royal Canadian Legion activities and helping people in need. He will be truly missed by those who knew him and loved him. Ed is survived by his wife, Ann of 59 years; his sons, Charles (Susan) Sydney, and Keith (Kristen), Aiken, South Carolina; brother, Bill (Sydney); sisters, Vida Anthony (Lantz, N.S.) and Pauline MacDonald (Halifax); grandchildren, Joshua, Amy MacGillivrary and Drew. He is also survived by one great-granddaughter, Abagale (Abby) MacGillivrary. Besides his parents, Ed was predeceased by a brother, Melton. (entrance on Church Street) on Friday, May 6, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate Ed's life will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Pier Community Funeral Home, All Faith Chapel with Rev. Maggie Coleman officiating. Reception will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 128, Whitney Pier. A private interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Garden, Sydney at a later date.
