Born in Sydney, Frank was the son of the late Ralph and Genevieve (Bates) MacDonald. He spent his younger years working at Ralph's Irving, his father's service station in Ashby. After that in 1969 he joined the fire department later to retire in 1995 as Captain. Frank is survived by his loving wife, Helen (Penney) MacDonald; son, Gary (Lynn) MacDonald, Fredericton; daughter Colleen (Paul) Mombourquette, Sydney Forks. He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Tracey, Paul, Nicole, Patrick, Melissa and Jeremy; six great-grandchildren, Brooke, Paige, Pennie, Ethan, Emma and Jesse. He was the last surviving member of his family. Besides his parents, Frank was predeceased by his brothers, Ralph Jr., Bud and Ross. Cremation has taken place and by request of the family there will be no visitation. A funeral celebrating Frank's life will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 27 at St. Theresa's Church, Sydney, with Fr. James Oliver officiating, reception to follow in church hall. (Hare) Shadforth Born In: North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 22/07/2011 Passed away suddenly at the age of 91 in Northwood Centre, Halifax, on July 22, 2011. She was born in North Sydney, N.S., the daughter of the late Nelson and Lavina (Hollingsworth) Hare. She was the last surviving member of her family. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, William E., sister, Florence, brother, Thomas and grandson, William. She leaves behind her loving family, son, William (Delores), Kingston, Ont.; daughters, Carol Clark, Halifax, Sandra (William), Dartmouth; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Mother was a dedicated member of the ACW of St. John's Anglican Church, North Sydney, N.S., and was well known throughout Cape Breton for her craft designs. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be forever missed by her family and friends. "How green is my valley" ************************************** John Hector MacNeil Born In: Bridgeport, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 22/07/2011 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Johnny Hector MacNeil, 87, Wallace Road, Glace Bay, on Friday, July 22, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Bridgeport, he was the son of the late Hector and Katie (Cameron) MacNeil. Prior to his retirement, Dad worked for the S&L and Devco Railways for over 40 years. He was a dedicated member of Saint John the Baptist parish and was very active in all parish activities including the parish council and the Men's Club. He also served on the board of Family Services for the Town of Glace Bay. In his younger days, dad enjoyed playing his guitar and singing at house parties and calling square sets. He especially loved Scottish music and was a faithful listener of the Donnie Campbell Show each Sunday evening. A wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, he is survived by his sons, Cameron (Kathy Gouthro), Sydney River, Kim (Patricia) Kentville; daughters, Johnna (Johnny) Nickelo, Dominion, and Jessie (Grant) Pearson, Burlington, Ont. He will be forever remembered by his grandchildren, Jessie and John MacNeil, Mitchell and Coady MacNeil, Katie and Christy Nickelo and Stuart, Cameron and Elizabeth Pearson. He is also survived by brothers, Alex, Bridgeport, and Fr. Ed, OMI, Ontario; and sister, Jessie Mae (Ross) Matheson, Marion Bridge. Dad will be fondly remembered by special friends, Ronnie and Louise MacNeil, George Allison and Emily MacIsaac. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Gert (MacNeil), brothers, Angus, Malcie, Cameron, Pius and Harvey, sisters, Sadie and Annie Theresa MacDougall and special cousin, Kaye Walsh. There will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian burial will take place Wednesday, July 27, at 11 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church, New Aberdeen, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Gerald passed away Saturday, July 23, 2011, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Eva (Campbell) and the late Robert Moore. Gerald was a bricklayer by trade and operated his own business, Jade Masonry in Glace Bay for 17 years. For the last three years, he was employed with the Cape Breton District School Board. Gerald was an avid Boston Bruins fan and so happy to see them win this year's Stanley Cup. Gerald will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 38 years, Marion 'Betty' (Swartzack); daughter, Jerilyn (Robert) Young, Oromocto, N.B.; sons, Robert Dale (Pam), Glace Bay, Richard Allen (Susan), Cold Lake, Alta.; his mother, Eva; brothers, Cecil, Roy (Doretta), John (Tracey), all of Glace Bay; sisters, Beatrice (Aubrey) Roberts, Ontario, Bernice (Tommy) O'Donnell, Ontario; cherished grandchildren, Justin, Jessica, Noah, Kayla and an expected grandson to be. Born and raised in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Frank and Susan (Herritt) Lee. After attending St. FX University, Joe resided in Halifax and Toronto before returning to Sydney River for the latter part of his career with the Bank of Nova Scotia, where he worked until his retirement. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church and a Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. Joe enjoyed the magic of Christmas and spoiling his wife and children. Many Sunday afternoons were spent dancing with his wife, Teresa in their living room. He leaves behind daughters, Laurie (Lance Nakamura) and Amy (John Conway); grandchildren, Kaiden, Spencer, Phoebe and Megan, all of Ontario. Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by his loving wife, Teresa Catherine. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, July 25, in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Born in Bonavista, N.L., Doris moved to Sydney in 1951 where she married and raised her family. Doris is survived by her husband, Melvin; daughters, Susan (Chuck Champion) and Janet; sons, Gary and Paul (Wendy), all from Sydney; sisters, Millicent Mercer, Newfoundland, and Doreen Whyte, Greenwood, N.S.; brother, Raymond, Newfoundland; as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Doris was predeceased by her parents and two sisters. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service in honour of the late Doris Ann Head will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, All Faith Chapel, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at 11 a.m. with Major Dan Roode officiating. Light refreshments will be served following the service in the reception area.
