Donald MacKay Born In: New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada Born On: 29/01/1944 Passed Away In: North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 25/07/2011 Rev. Donald Walker MacKay, 67, of New Glasgow, residing in North Sydney at the time of his sudden but peaceful death at home, on July 25, 2011. No matter where life took Donald, he always deeply treasured his roots and connections to Pictou County. He was born Jan. 29, 1944 in New Glasgow, the son of the late Donald A. MacKay and the late Margaret (Smith) MacKay. He spent his early years in Riverton before the family relocated to New Glasgow. During his teen years he felt a call to Christian ministry, largely influenced by his summer camping experiences at Camp Geddie, Merigomish. A graduate of Acadia University, Wolfville, he pursued academic and ministry training at Presbyterian College, Montreal leading to ordination as a minister of The Presbyterian Church in Canada in 1968. Holding deep interest in the mission of the church, Donald accepted assignments in Italy, Nigeria, Ghana and in the Atlantic region of Canada. Over twenty years of his ministry was spent serving the Presbyterian Church in Nigeria in various capacities, including being a theological instructor for the training of future ministers. In his years as Regional Staff for the Synod for the Atlantic Provinces he contributed to the leadership development of many people, including numerous young people, through his work as the summer director at Camp Geddie. After returning to Canada from Ghana in 2008, and anticipating a new role in ministry in Cape Breton, Donald was diagnosed with cancer that eventually necessitated his retirement from the pastoral ministry. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Marion (Barclay); his brother, Roderick (Lynne) Waverly, N.S. and their family, Aarin, Toronto, Ont., Aarika (Noel) Machat and their children, Keira and Keigan Machat, Dubai, UAE, and Andrea, Dartmouth; his brother, Robert (Melinda) living in Venice, Florida; his mother-in-law, Janet Barclay, Maple Ridge, B.C. and the members of Marion's family; and numerous cousins. He will also be remembered fondly by those who "became his family" during the years he lived in Nigeria and Ghana. Special thanks are extended to those who supported him in these last few years: the congregations of St. James, Big Bras d'Or, Knox, Ross Ferry and St. Andrew's, Sydney Mines; Dr. Bill MacDonald, Dr. Ron MacCormick and the staff of the Cape Breton Cancer Center, and the staff of palliative care. Instead of a visitation, a brief service of prayers and thanksgiving, conducted by the Presbytery of Cape Breton, will be held on Thursday, July 28 at 7 p.m., followed by a reception, within St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines. A memorial service, conducted by the Presbytery of Pictou will be held on Friday, July 29, at 3 p.m. within First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Camp Geddie (PO Box 34 New Glasgow, NS B2H 5E5); the Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of your choice. *************************************** Patrick Petrie Burial services for the late Patrick Vincent Petrie will be held in Lingan at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church Cemetery on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 2 p.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to McGillivray Funeral Home. ************************************** Norman MacIsaac Born In: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 23/07/2011 It is with deep sadness that we, the family of Norman Roderick MacIssac, regret to announce his sudden passing at the An Cala unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on Saturday, July 23, 2011. I often hide my heartache, When someone speaks your name. Sad is my heart that loves you, Silent are my tears that fall. Living my life without you, Is the hardest part of all. The special years will not return, The ones we spent together. But with your love still in my heart, You'll be with me forever. Submitted by Leanne Graham, Telehealth Site Coordinator It all started with a story that my co-worker told me about his son and daughter-in-law. Like so many Maritimers, Thomas Hill headed west, seeking opportunities. While he trained to be a Federal Guard in Grande Cache, Alberta, his wife Beth was home in Kentville getting prepared to move...and give birth to their first child. Thomas' graduation and first rotation at the penitentiary would prevent him from being in Kentville until late June. The baby was born on June 6. Was there anything that Telehealth could do to bridge the nearly 4000 km and 60-hour drive from Kentville, NS to Grande Cache, AB? After a bit of local discussion, some extra work by the video-conference scheduler, a couple of emails and a test call, the lines of communication were ready for Baby Hill when he or she arrived to meet Dad. Emails from Telehealth coordinators in Kentville to Grande Cache with titles such as, "Do we have a baby yet?" passed almost daily. And then on June 15, just 24 hours after beautiful Madilyn Hill was born, Madilyn and her Mom sat in front of a large monitor in Kentville, NS with Dad at the other end in Grande Cache, AB meeting for the first time... virtually. In another week when Thomas gets his first leave, they will meet again, this time in reality. For me, the experience was refreshing. I am thankful to the Telehealth team in Grande Cache for their enthusiasm and cooperation, the community of staff and friends at Valley Regional Hospital who were so eager to help this family make the best of the situation. And finally to the Hill family, who graciously shared their story that stretched across Canada.
