Kevin MacDonald, 56, of Glace Bay passed away Friday, July 1, 2011, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Reginald and Mary (Connors) MacDonald. Kevin was a member of St. Anthony Church, Glace Bay. He was employed as a pipefitter working in various locations. Kevin was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan. He was a collector of baseball and hockey cards and various sports memorabilia. Kevin and Brenda loved to travel. Kevin will be sadly missed by his wife, Brenda (Watkins); son, Christopher (Nyree), Ottawa; sisters, Brenda Anderson, Glace Bay, Arlene (David) Nichols, Sydney; godson, Bradley Dearing, Sault Saint Marie, Ont.; mother-in-law, Mary Watkins and sister and brothers-in-law. Besides his parents, Kevin was predeceased by a brother, Reggie and father-in-law, Michael 'Mick' Watkins. In honouring Kevin's wishes, cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Visitation for Kevin will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2011, in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home with a funeral mass to follow at 2 p.m. at St. Anthony's Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. A reception will follow in the church hall. Donations in Kevin's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Born in Florence, Butch was the son of the late Maurice and Florence (Jessome) Edwards. In his earlier life he worked with Nickersons in North Sydney and later retired from Sydney Steel Plant. He was a creative woodworker and his greatest joy was music - especially his guitar and extensive record collection of well known artists. He is survived by his wife, Shirley (March); brother, Gerald (Georgie), Sydney Mines; sisters, Mildred MacPhee, Winnipeg, Genevieve 'Jenny' MacDonald, North Sydney, Muriel Skinner, Sydney Mines, and Elizabeth (Lee) White, Florence; brothers-in-law, Allan, Joseph (Helen), Roddie (Thora) and Gilbert March; sisters-in-law, Joan, Sadie (George) and Paula. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Gordon, Freddie, Raymond and Cyril, sisters, Marguerite and Carolyn, and his brother-in-law, Richard March. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. There will be no visitation. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to d.francis@ns.sympatico.ca. ********************************************* Loretta Marjorie Thorne Born In: Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada Born On: 08/09/1940 Passed Away In: Scotchtown, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 01/07/2011 Loretta Thorne, 70, of Ryan Street, Scotchtown, and a former resident of Hudson Street, New Waterford, passed away Friday, July 1, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born Sept. 8, 1940, in Dartmouth, she was the daughter of the late James and Marjorie (Bowes) Cooke. Loretta grew up in Dartmouth, N.S., and subsequently moved to New Waterford. She was a member of the New Waterford Pensioners Club. Loretta was an avid dart player at the French Club, New Waterford. Loretta is survived by two sons, Baxter (Sandra) Thorne, Jimmy (Charlene) Thorne, Charlene's sister, Tammy White, all in New Waterford; one grandchild, Hunter Charles Gabriel Thorne, New Waterford, who was the light of her life; two step-grandchildren, Dylan, Joshua; and one sister, Betty (Ron) Griffith, Dartmouth. She is also survived by her loving and supporting family friend, Sharon MacLeod, nee Loveys of Big Bras d'Or. Loretta will be sadly missed by her loving pet dog, Gismo. Loretta was predeceased by her husband, Charles Wesley Thorne. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Duncan Roach is Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. in Calvin United Church, followed by interment in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown. Born in South Bar, C.B., she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Jennie (Dingwall) MacLeod. Deep family and community connections followed Charlotte from her hometown of South Bar to Milford Station. She was a mischievous presence in the living rooms of family and neighbours alike, and was a great adversary and even greater friend. Charlotte was a community builder. She taught generations of piano students, was a fixture at the farmers' market and was a proud mother and grandmother. A voracious reader she loved jazz, travel, cooking and weaving. Known as much for her quick wit as her quilts, Charlotte will be dearly missed. She was predeceased by husband, Walter Marlow and sister, Joan Scott (MacLeod).
