Born in Montreal, she moved to Cape Breton at a young age. She enjoyed knitting and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by three daughters, Jessica (Mrs. Richard Hudson), Betty (Mrs. Dale McKnight), Levina (Mrs. Graham J. Mulholland); two sons, Jimmy (Nicki) Turner, Charles (Joy) Parks. Vivian has 15 grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren. She was anxiously awaiting the birth of her 15th great-grandchild. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Pearl Parks with whom she shared a very special bond. Vivian was predeceased by her husband, James 'Nudge' Parks, two daughters, Sharon Lucas and Anna Parks, and her son, Ronnie Parks. Born in Antigonish County, she was a daughter of the late Percy Langille and Hattie (Jack). Alice was a member of St. Michael's parish, the New Waterford Ladies Hospital Auxiliary and Cub Scouts of Canada. She also served as a volunteer with the Legion in New Waterford. Mom's feisty, independent spirit and love for family and friends will always be remembered. She had an impish sense of humour and pulled many pranks which are revisited often and with much laughter. Mom loved to travel, whether on a drive with dad, across Canada or to foreign lands. Although she left Cape Breton for a time, her heart and memories called her back to Cape Breton. At the age of 85 she 'came home'. Born in Glace Bay, March 27, 1943, she was the daughter of the late David and Jennie (McNeil) Scheller. In her early years Patricia was a dedicated homemaker and later in life became a CNA and was employed at Holy Redeemer Infirmary in Sydney for 10 years. She also served for a short time with the St. Agnes CWL. Patricia was perhaps best known for her kind thoughts and words to all her friends from over the years. She always enjoyed company and a good cup of tea with everyone who came into her home and was loved by all those who knew her and an inspiration for many with her resilience and determination. Patricia took in many people over the years and for many was a surrogate mother who loved and cared for them as her own. She had a strong faith and prayer life with a soft spirit which was reflected in her daily life. Her life revolved around her family and friend's happiness and welfare. She will be sadly missed by her loving children, sons, Kim (Janice) Nearing, Oshawa, Ont., Derrick (Maureen) Nearing, Pembroke, Ont., Kevin Nearing, New Waterford; daughters, Andrea Nearing, Toronto, Ont., and Carol Nearing, New Waterford. He is survived by his wife, Greta of 57 years; sons, David and James (Elaine); grandchildren, Christopher, Heather (Kevin Merrill) and Erika (Joel Peach) and three great-grandchildren. Donnie was predeceased by his parents, Donnell and Florence Kerr, his sons, Ross and Brad and his siblings, Allister (Mynn), Lois (Duncan Ferguson) and Jean (Blair Phillips). Donnie's early working years were on the S&L Railway before switching to sales with first Sears and then Wrigley's Gum. Turning down a transfer from Wrigley's to move to Halifax, Donnie started his own business Don Kerr Insurance so he could remain in Glace Bay. Singing was always a passion with Donnie and he expressed this passion when he sang with the Men of the Deeps and Knox United Church choir. He was also a dedicated Mason and was Past Master of The Tyrian Youth Lodge #45. The family would like to thank the Cape Breton County Homemakers Society and the VON who provided wonderful comfort for Donnie allowing him to remain at home. A memorial service will be held for Donnie at Knox United Church, Wednesday, July 13 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Finlayson presiding. A reception will follow in the Memorial Room of the church. Carmie was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her greatest passion in life was her family, which she adored and loved to be surrounded by. Her door was always open to her family and friends with love and great wit. She had eyes as bright as stars, and a heart that would warm your soul. Their love and devotion to each other was evident as Norma endured a 15-year battle with cancer. Norma will be deeply missed by her daughter and best friend, Donna (Barry) Rogers, as well as her two precious grandsons, Zachary and Lucas Rogers, who were the light of her life. Thorne Born In: North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Born On: 26/07/1924 Passed Away In: North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 08/07/2011 We the family of George E. Thorne are saddened to announce George's passing on July 8, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital following a courageous battle with his ailing health. Born in North Sydney, July 26, 1924, George was the son of Samuel G. Thorne and Mary Dooley Thorne. He was the last remaining member of his birth family. George was a graduate of St. Joseph's school in North Sydney, and Sydney Academy. Following his service in the Second World War as an air force navigator, George spent two years in Dalhousie University's law program. He was also a retired sea cadet officer. George spent most of his working career as a travelling salesperson where he developed many lifelong friendships. Before and after his retirement George was an active community member with many volunteer positions. Raising his family of five with his wife Alicia in Coxheath, George was a retired captain of the Coxheath Volunteer Fire Department. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 151, East Bay had George fill every executive position available during his membership. His position as service officer allowed him to provide many veterans with assistance. George also held the position of zone commander for the Royal Canadian Legion. George was a past officer of the United Steel Workers of America #1064. George held the positions of both senior counsellor and grand counsellor with the United Commercial Travellers. He was a passionate volunteer with Special Olympics and served as Nova Scotia Special Olympics first executive director. George worked tirelessly for the Cape Breton Chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society. As the society's publicity chairperson, George welcomed Terry Fox to Cape Breton Island and hosted him at his Coxheath home while coordinating local media services to bring awareness to Terry's goal. The Cape Breton Regional Hospital was fortunate to have George work as an accreditation team member, and he served 18 years as the secretary of the Cape Breton Veteran's Hospital Comfort Fund. George loved to golf and his Seaview buddies will always remember the "Silver Fox" and his early morning tee-off toasts. Backyard gardening brought much satisfaction to George and his Kadesh (place of peace) in Benacadie was his little piece of Heaven. George is survived by the love of his life, Alicia, his wife of 59 years; his four children, Joan Thorne, Elaine (John) Manocchio, Bob (Patti) Thorne and David (Terry Ann) Thorne; seven grandchildren, John Paul, Michael, Tyler, Vanessa, Leanne, Chaylene, Courtney; one great-grandchild, Darnell; along with many nieces and nephews that hold George close to their heart. Family was George's first priority. Ken spent his career as a truck driver and spent the last seven years working in Fort McMurray, Alta. He was also an avid sportsman. In his younger years, he loved to hunt, fish, play hockey and baseball. His favourite pastime was spending time with his children, grandchildren and many friends.
