Chisholm ******************************************************************************************************* Ronald 'Big Jim' MacLean Born In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Born On: 28/11/1936 Passed Away In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 18/07/2011 Ronald James 'Big Jim' MacLean, 74, of Sydney passed away peacefully at home surrounded with love on Monday, July 18, 2011. Born in Sydney on Nov. 28, 1936, he was the son of the late Ronald (Ranny) and Elizabeth (Hines). Jim will be forever remembered by his loving wife of 50 years, Joyce (MacDonald). His loving children, Ronald (Sue), Ottawa, Karen (Dan) MacKinnon, Fall River, Jim (Nancy), Timberlea, Debbie (Jim) MacRury, Mira; and his adoring grandchildren, Katie, Gregory, Lauren, Scott, Joseph, Calum, Michael and Rannie. He is also remembered by his sister, Peggy (Sanderson), who adored him and his best friend and cousin, Kevin MacIntyre and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by his sisters, Sadie (James Buchanan), Irene (Art McMahon), Rita (Dennis Natalona), Kay (Frank Penny) and Georgina (George Walker) and brother-in-laws, Sandy Sanderson, Mickey Gillis and John F. MacDonald. Jim worked as a fireman on the S&L Railroad in 1954 for six years. Jim owned/operated Jim's Irving on Ashby corner then he started working at R.J. Logue and continued working as sales manager with Duncan MacIntyre at MacIntyre Chev. for 30 plus years. Jim was a member of the board of directors of the Sydney Co-op and a member of the Lingan Golf and Country Club for many years, where he was a former board member. Jim was very proud to be from Ashby corner where he grew up on Margaret Street. He had a tremendous knowledge of the history of the community which he loved to share. Jim was very passionate about sports. He enjoyed being involved with harness racing at the Cape Breton Sports Centre. One of his favourite sports was baseball and he played first base with the Sydney Steel Kings and New Waterford Giants. He loved his game of golf and was always certain to make his tee time. Jim and Joyce were among a devoted group of friends who travelled to Florida, Italy and Ireland, among many other places. Jim had many accomplishments in his life, including a successful hockey career. He played at Constantine School and St. Theresa's parish and progressed to play with the Sydney Mines Ten Pennies. Jim advanced to the top level of senior hockey in Eastern Canada and professionally in the Eastern United States. The Sydney Millionaires Oldtimers hockey team was a significant part of his hockey career where he made long lasting friendships. Jim was recognized for his hockey achievements when he was inducted into the Cape Breton Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 for the team award with the Sydney Mines Ten Pennies and in 2008 for his individual achievement in hockey. He was further recognized by the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 2008 for his team achievement with the Amherst Senior Ramblers hockey team. Big Jim was well respected as a hockey coach and mentor and he was a positive influence in many lives. In 1979, he successfully coached the Whitney Pier Steelers to the Midget 'A' crown. Jim was a member of St. Theresa's parish and he was active in the Men's Club and loved to sing as a member of the senior choir. Jim treasured his time with Joyce, his children and grandchildren who enjoyed his many hockey stories and great sense of humour. Jim was always a part of the circle of friends of his children and grandchildren. Dad was a wonderful man and was loved by all that knew him. Visitation will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, 2 p.m. at St. Theresa Church, Sydney, with Fr. Oliver officiating. St. Augustine of Hippo, 354-430 *********************************** Margaret Broderick Born In: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Born On: 06/01/1929 Passed Away In: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 19/07/2011 It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Margaret 'Margie' Broderick on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 in Halifax, where she had resided for the last several months. She lived her entire life in the family home at 115 Victoria St., Glace Bay. Born in Glace Bay, Jan. 6, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Louis Thomas and Gertrude Margaret (McDaniel) Broderick. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Margie was a member of St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay. After graduating from St. Anne's High School, Provincial Normal College, Margie returned later to St. Francis Xavier University obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She enjoyed her career as a teacher in Point Aconi and the Glace Bay area retiring from St. Michael's Senior High School in 1988. During her earlier years Margie was an accomplished basketball player which led to coaching youth basketball. She also served at one time as a member of the Board of Directors for the Glace Bay Hospital. She especially loved her cottage on the Margaree River in North East Margaree on the property of her late maternal grandparents where her past times included many lively games of auction forty-fives with family, friends and visitors and fly-fishing for salmon on the Margaree River. Margie is survived by nieces and nephews, Thomas (Tanis) Broderick, Fergus, Ont.; Kathryn (Terry) Bolger, Elora, Ont.; Mary Jo Broderick, Calgary, Alta.; Elizabeth Anne Broderick and John Lorne Broderick of Antigonish, N.S.; Jamie Broderick and Janice (Harold) McIntyre, Sydney, N.S.; Paul (Stacy) Gauthier, San Francisco, Calif.; Margaret (Ariz) David, Halifax, N.S.; and several grand nieces and grand nephews and great-grand nieces and great-grand nephews; numerous cousins; two sisters-in law, Ella Broderick, Fergus, Ont. and Marge Broderick, Sydney, N.S. and brother-in-law, Reginald Gauthier, Halifax, N.S. She will live on in the hearts of all and be missed by many. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, William, Adrian, John and Reginald; sister, Alice and an infant sister, Marie. Heartfelt thanks are extended to all the QEII doctors and nurses and palliative care team, RJF Health Care Nurses and The Berkeley Bedford Staff who gave their all to care for Margie over the past months - Thank You. Online condolences to the family can be expressed at jmcurry@ns.sympatico.ca. ******************************** Gervais 'Gerry' Labrie Born In: Rimouski, Quebec, Canada Born On: 16/05/1932 Passed Away In: North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 19/07/2011 It is with sadness that we announce the death of Gervais Lionel 'Gerry' Labrie, after a long and courageous battle with COPD, on Tuesday, July 19, 2011. Born May 16, 1932 in Rimouski, Quebec, he was the son of the late Lionel and Stella (Belanger) Labrie. Gerry retired as chief petty officer from the RCN after 23 years of service. After leaving the navy, he was employed by Dow Chemical in Sarnia, Ont., Port Hawkesbury, N.S. and Minas Basin Pulp and Power Company, Hantsport, N.S. Gerry enjoyed travelling, hiking, hunting, fishing and reading. He especially enjoyed spending time at the cottage in Big Beach, C.B., playing 45s and having a good drink of rum with friends. He is survived by sisters, Pierrette (Claude) Marman, Michelle (Vince) Hunt; brothers, Camille (Yvette), Alain (Claudette); sister-in-law, Velma Labrie and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by the love of his life, best friend and wife of 50+ years, Marion (Burke) Lebrie; brothers, Giles and Claude. Born in Sydney Mines on Feb. 21, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Roddie and Ellen (Vickers) MacIntyre. Bernetta worked for many years at National Sea Products Fish Plant in North Sydney. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 008, Sydney Mines, and a 45 year member of the ladies auxiliary. Bernetta was also a member of the North Sydney and Sydney Mines Pensioners' Clubs. She will be sadly missed by her son, Gerard (Ellie) and her granddaughter, Isabella, who was the light of her life. Also left to mourn her loss are her brothers, Lenny (Margie), Cliff (Darlene) and Raymond; and her sisters, Ann (Jim), Wendy (Jimmy), Cathy (George), Barb and Heather; the father of her son, Gerard MacGean Sr., and many nieces and nephews. Bernetta will be sadly missed by great friends, Sonny Tremblett, Arnell Barrie, Darlene Cameron and Eileen Romeo. Beloved wife of Patrick MacLeod for 40 years, mother of Patrick Jr. (Shannon) and Cory (Carla and her children Tonicha and Fernando), grandmother of Aidan and Abby her pride and joy. Sister of Eddie (Joanne), Marlene Wallace (Wayne), Brian, Kevin, Theresa O'Toole, Louie (Laurnice Walsh), Elizabeth Parsons (Tim) and Patsy O'Toole. Born in North Sydney February 15, 1949 Linda was the daughter of the Francis and Anne (Wall) O'Toole (Musgrave). Linda was employed at Sobeys of North Sydney for many years. Everyone that met Linda instantly loved her, her personality and laugh would win your heart over. Linda loved her dog Jessie who was faithfully by her side, loved playing bingo which she enjoyed with her family and friends. Linda always looked forward to spending time with family and awaited the visits from her sons and their families. Linda was predeceased by her father Francis O'Toole; sister Jacinta Miles; brother Raymond and father and mother-in-law John and Katie MacLeod. Linda touched everyone's heart in a special way. She was loved by all who knew her and will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers and sisters in law and her many friends. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Francis Funeral Home of Sydney Mines. There will be no visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Josephs Church North Sydney with Father Patrick O'Neil officiating. She passed away at home with her husband and lifelong partner of 33 years, Ron Anderson, at her side. Lorraine was born in Sydney, N.S., on April 16, 1956, to Doris MacKinnon and the late Edgar MacKinnon of Sydney. Formerly of Sydney, Lorraine spent most of her life living and working away in Texas and Ontario. She found great happiness in her life, being with Ron and caring for animals. Left to mourn her passing are her sisters, Debbie (Frank) MacDonald, Sydney, Glenda Donovan, Baddeck, Ruth (Harry) Pothier, Sydney and one brother, Duane (Lynne), Sydney; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one brother, Alexander. Cremation has taken place; and at her request, a memorial service will not take place at this time. "Lorraine will always be in our hearts". ************************************** Esther Campbell Born In: Lowell, Massachusetts, United States Passed Away In: St. Peter's, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 14/07/2011 We regret to announce the death of Esther Mary Campbell which occurred, Thursday, July 14, 2011 in Richmond Villa Born in Lowell Ma., she was a daughter of the late James and Cora (Mitchell) Kinney. Esther grew up in Sydney and eventually settled in St. Peter's. She worked at Kaplan's in St. Peter's, then opened Campbell's Dairy Freeze in 1973, which she operated until her death. Esther was a member of St. Peter's United Church and a member of St. Peter's Lioness, St. Peter's Community Club, Bonnie Brae, and a partner of the MacAskill House Museum. She is survived by her son, Gary and his wife, June; grandsons, Anthony and Andrew; granddaughters, Jody and Michelle. She was predeceased by her husband, George 'Jiggs'; son, James; brother, George. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 2 p.m. from St. Peter's United Church, St. Peter's, with Rev. Michael Goodfellow officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.
