Born in Florence, she was the daughter of the late Maurice and Florence (Jessome) Edwards. She is survived by her children, James Edwards (Mary Lou), Ross Ferry, Jennifer Bicknell (Zack), Florence, and Geralyn Eyking (Theodore), Millville; her grandchildren, Jimmy Lorne, Anna, Cora, Joseph, Morgan, Aaron, Maria and Oscar; her sisters, Mildred MacPhee, Winnipeg, Lee White, Florence and Jenny MacDonald, North Sydney and her brother, Gerald, Sydney Mines. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Leo Skinner; her brothers, Butch, Cyril, Raymond, Freddie and Gordon Edwards; her sisters, Margie Edwards and Carilyn White. Muriel enjoyed camping at Englishtown Ridge, loved cooking and baking and most of all loved spending time with her grandchildren. In her younger years, she worked at Nickerson's Fish Plant. There will be no visitation. A graveside service will take place on Tuesday, 11 a.m. in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Florence, with her nephew, Fr. Conrad Edwards officiating. Funeral services will be held in the Evans Chapel on Monday, July 11 ,2011 at 1:00 p.m. Cremation with interment of ashes in Glace Bay, N.S. *********************************** Ronald 'Ron' Keough Born In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Born On: 13/05/1948 Passed Away In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 07/07/2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Ronald 'Ron' Keough, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on July 7, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer. Ron, born May 13, 1948 in Sydney, was the oldest son of Gerald and 'Bernie' (O'Neil) Keough. Ron grew up on St. Peter's Rd and lived on Park Street in Sydney for many years before moving to Coxheath where he lived with and cared for his ailing and aging father. He was predeceased by his mother in 1997 and his father in 2008. He was also predeceased by his sister, Mary Alayne (Hopgood) Keough in 2009. He is survived by his sister, Fran (aka Geraldine) and brothers, Jack and Jerry Pat Keough. He is also survived by his godson, David Keough as well as a number of nieces and nephews. Ron's life was filled with an amazing number of friends who were very dear to him. Ron is probably best known for his humour and wit. No doubt, if Ron was writing this notice, he'd have written something that would have us all laughing by now. He was a friend, son, uncle and brother. Ron was a talented and creative man who demonstrated his talents in his writing and various jobs in the arts community around Cape Breton, most notably in the field of theatre. He was a cast member of the first Rise and Follies in 1977 and contributed many jokes to Summertime Revue. He managed the Boardmore Playhouse at CBU for a number of years where he created and produced several original plays in addition to helping many others who shared his love for the stage. Ron was the originator of the 4U2 SEA license plate, the stylized tarabish playing cards, and the Cape Breton Passport. Ron was also a staunch supporter of and advocate for the Aids Coalition of Cape Breton, and was a member of its current Board of Directors. Ron was a dreamer, a writer, a walker, a gracious host and an innovator. He will be missed by all who knew him. The family would like to thank the many people who have helped Ron over the years, especially during the time of his illness, with special appreciation for the Home Support workers who provided care for the past three years. There will no visitation or service at this time. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A gathering for friends and family, in celebration of a life lived, will be held, Saturday, July 16th, 2-5 p.m. at the home of his good friends, Gerald and Susan Taylor, 78 Park St., Sydney. Louis was a member of Holy Rosary parish, Westmount. He was employed with Sydney Steel and several construction companies in the local area until his retirement. Louis was also employed with the RCR as a paratrooper. He volunteered with the Westmount Fire Department and was a very dedicated volunteer with the Cancer Relay. Louis was a member of the ATV Club, Search & Rescue, Ski-doo Club and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 126, Westmount. Lou was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed ski-dooing, fishing, hunting and his passion was riding his ATV through the Highlands with his friends. Louis will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 61 years, Annie (Ranson); daughter, Lola (Ron) MacEachern, Marion Bridge; sons, John (Maureen), Dartmouth and Michael, at home; four grandchildren, Trina and Tannis MacEachern and Chris and Brent Moulins and four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Daniel, Brock and ChloƩ. Mom's strength, intelligence and generosity were only equalled by her warmth, kindness and passion for life. She was a fiercely independent woman and a loyal friend with an unwavering love for her grandchildren. She was a graduate of The Truro's Teacher College and taught school in the late 1940s at Alder Point Elementary. She then went on to graduate from Mount Saint Bernard College in Antigonish before moving to Halifax where she worked for Maritime Tel and Tel. There she met and fell in love with Joe Dooley who she married in 1951 and left the work force to raise a family. At age 61 she chose to return to the work force where she enjoyed the following 11 years at Park Haven Estates, retiring at age 72. She is survived by her five children, sons, Bob (Linda Rodie), Bill (Jennifer McBeath), Patrick (Nicole Frosst) and daughters, Nancy (Grabowski) and Peggy. Grandchildren, Damien, Margaret (Matt Curtis), Emma, Bridget and Emmett; step-Grandchildren, Jack, Marin and Taylor. Great-grandson, Jacob; sisters, Mary (Carafotes) Massachusetts and Frances (Barrie) Ontario; brothers, Chester and Clifton, Cape Breton. Also survived by sister-in-law, Pauline Dooley, P.E.I.; brother-in-law, Adrian Barrie, Cape Breton and many nieces and nephews. Born in Alder Point, Cape Breton, mom was the daughter of Pascal LeBlanc and Margaret (McGrath) LeBlanc. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph; son-in-law, Rick Grabowski; daughter-in-law, Lena Healy; sisters, Evelyn (Theriault) and Marguerite (Barrie); brothers, Bernard, Strickland and four siblings in infancy. Mom was a devote Catholic and a life time member of the St. John the Baptist C.W.L. She took great pride in her garden and home. She loved playing bridge and spending time with her girlfriends. She loved to bake and her squares and pies were always eagerly anticipated. She had a life-long passion for skating and curling that carried on from participant to dedicated arm chair athlete. Born in Whitney Pier, he was the son of the late Joseph and Gertrude Tubrett. In his early years, Sonny did military service with the airborne unit of the Royal Canadian Regiment. He then worked at Abbotts Lab in Montreal and Halifax. He returned to his beloved Cape Breton and worked, first at the Devco Coal Piers and then, retired from the Coke Ovens Department of Sydney Steel Corp. Sonny loved the outdoors and he was an avid hunter and fisherman. In later life, he enjoyed watching baseball and boxing. His many friends will remember his friendly smile, quick wit, and even quicker left hand. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carmel (Somers) and their five children, Paulette DiFlavio, Debbie Tubrett, Gerry (Cheryl MacIntyre), Valerie Tubrett (Darren Youden), and Tommy (Tracey Young), all of Sydney; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. As well, he is survived by his sister, Helen (Gerry Aucoin), Dartmouth and Peggy (the late Rusty Keough), Westmount; brothers, Edward (Anne Kennedy), Lunenburg, and Earle (Margie), Ingonish. Sonny was predeceased by brothers, Bobby and Gorman. As per Sonny's request, there will be no visitation. A memorial mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Church on Tuesday 11 a.m., Rev. Ken spent his career as a truck driver and spent the last seven years working in Fort McMurray, Alta. He was also an avid sportsman. In his younger years, he loved to hunt, fish, play hockey and baseball. His favourite pastime was spending time with his children, grandchildren and many friends. Ken is survived by his wife, Patsy; his four sons, Ken (Lisa), Moncton, N.B., James (Colleen), Sydney Mines, Graham (Michelle), Spencerville, Ont., and Anthony (Courtney), Ottawa, Ont. Formerly from New Waterford, Don enlisted in the air force at an early age. He had a special interest in computers and volunteered his time to help others with computer problems. Don had a spectacular sense of humour and was loved and respected by all. Lou was born in Bras d'Or, N.S., on May 10, 1927, son of the late Elsie and Alexander Crews. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved fishing, hunting and camping. His favourite times were spent on the lake and around the campfire, surrounded by friends. He joined the army as a boy soldier in 1944 and was a member of the RCEME for 38 years. Lou received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the War Medal 1935-45, the United Nations Emergency Force Medal-Middle East, the Peacekeeping Medal and Canadian Forces Decoration and Clasps. He was very community-minded and volunteered with many organizations, always ready to lend a hand. Lou will be greatly missed by his daughter and granddaughter, Tracey and Denise Lacroix, Red Deer; his son, Terry Crews, Innisfail; his daughter, Kelly Faulkner (Jim), Moncton and grandson, Craig; his son, Skip Crews (Brenda), Calgary and grandchildren, Tyrell, Kasey and Trevor. She was the daughter of the late Mark and Florence (LeBlanc) Chiasson. Although born in Reserve Mines, Carmella lived for some time in Boston, before taking up permanent residence in California. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Jerry; brothers, Charles, Wilfred 'Kid', Howard 'Hurley', Aloysius and Harry and by her sister, Georgina Wood.
