In their long married life they were parted only for a short time by illness but reunited in a nursing home for their special care needs. Being with him again was her greatest fulfilling happiness in their togetherness in the last two years. Uncle Nick passed away in April at 101 years. Aunt Mary for the last six months found it more unbearable to be without him than to make it to her centurion status as his partner. She joined him willingly when he came to "check in on her" in her "dreams" this past month. Aunt Mary was the last of her immediate family. She came to Canada with her mother and siblings in 1917 to join her father and oldest brother, Steve, who arrived in Canada in 1914. She was educated in Glace Bay, learning the language and played an active part in the family businesses, as well as home life, prospering as well in every cultural and social opportunity that the mining community of Glace Bay had to offer. She studied music, played piano and violin and could teach both. Both she and her sister, Jennie loved their music in their home and social environment. Aunt Mary and Uncle Nick were married in 1938. She at that time lost her Canadian citizenship because Nick was in the Merchant Navy of Greece and she had to reapply for hers and his citizenships to be again in Canada as Canadians. They celebrated their life together in both Canada and Greece and they had the best of both worlds - but no children. In their union they baptized, help guide and inspire all their relatives children, throughout the years. Aunt Mary knitted for every baby born in their community on both sides of the Atlantic and kept entertaining all their nieces, nephews and godchildren, on both sides of the family, by word, action and example, to be the best they could be. In her immediate family she was predeceased by her brother, Emmanuel at sea (1917), while travelling to their new country of Canada; her father, George in 1947; mother, Helen in 1958; brother, Nick in 1987; brothers, John, Anthony and Steven, between '88 - '89; Jennie, her only sister, born in Canada, died in 2008. Mary's nieces and nephews surviving her are Helen Xidos (Steve's daughter), Eleni Chronis Wade (Jennie's daughter); Billy Chronis (Jennie's son), Von, George and Nick Markadonis (John's sons), Argena and George (Tony's children) and so very close to her also were Nick's nieces and nephews, Katherine Farmakoulas and Emmanuel Xidos, Laodiki (Vicky Xidos) Lutwick, Socrates, Manuel and Loulouthe Kambouris, Catherine Kambouris, Loulis Vihos, Teena Vihos, Lakis Vihos. Mary's godchildren are Jeremy Chronis, Dino Sophocleous and Steven Vihos, here in Canada and many others in Greece. All were so very close to Aunt Mary and Uncle Nick, their numerous visits, calls throughout the years reflected the love and devotion they shared for them which was unending - as theirs was to them! For all of us, Aunt Mary and Uncle Nick were the fibrous backbone of our community and they were the perpetual force of its sustainability. We miss you so much Aunt Mary and Uncle Nick - but we know because of you all was well for us who loved you here on earth - as it is with you both now in Heaven. We can't thank enough the wonderful and continuous care giving by Dr. David Ley and his staff and the wonderful caregivers who made life at their home so enjoyable for the devoted couple. And to the staff of Seaview Manor - for successfully managing to continue "their togetherness" at the end of their lives together. They were an exceptional couple and managed to embrace love and caring wherever they were - thank you all so very much for caring and sharing. To all the early pioneer families and their present offspring - Aunt Mary and Uncle Nick would like to say a sincere thank you for making their lives of work and care together such a wonderful experience; and Cape Bretoners a wonderful part of their lives. Thank you and Good-bye! Visitation Friday, Oct. 8, 2010 at Curry's Funeral Home, Main Street, Glace Bay. Funeral will be Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010 at 2 p.m. at St. Anargyree Church, Marconi Street, Glace Bay. Interment at Forest Haven. Flowers optional or donations to a charity of your choice. *********************************** Michael Freeman Fitzgerald Born in: Dingwall, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 19/04/1922 Passed away in: Dingwall, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 06/10/2010 Mike died peacefully surrounded by family in Buchanan Memorial Hospital on Oct. 6, 2010. 1. Re: [Cape Breton Co NS] early marriages

    3. Hi list, I have been following this string for a few days and thought the following might be of some help towards getting things straightened out. The book, "History of the Presbyterian Church in Cape Breton" - 1921, by Rev. John Murray (1843-1935) was written by the order of the Presbyterian Church to record the beginnings of its ministry in Cape Breton while a few of the settlers who actually remembered, or had heard tell of, the events were still available to be interviewed. As has been pointed out in this string, the initial ministry took the form of traveling ministers, holding services where and when they could. It was quite a bit later that more dedicated structures, or churches, were built. The initial part of the book deals with each of the 19 "first" ministers, starting with Rev. James McGregor who landed in 1798, and continuing with the others up to about 1850. The second part carries the story of the church forward by reviewing the beginning and development of 43 congregations and their ministers. The final part of the book contains a miscellany of other useful and varied information concerning Presbyterianism in Cape Breton, but which didn't fit within the structure of the first two parts. Like many similar subjects it is a complicated topic, embroiling many characters, and it's "lines" frequently cross and become tangled making it difficult to keep straight in memory. This book, however, is the key to keeping the facts straight and to - for instance - knowing which churches were established where and when and what, if any, disasters beset them - and their records. Our digital edition of the book can be found in our online catalogue with catalogue number CA0080. Regrettably I cannot offer similar level of detailed information of the other churches (faiths) established in Cape Breton through this early period although we are always on the lookout for suitable books to digitize. We do have some more general book on the development of organized religion in Canada, and have more to come. Malcolm Archive CD Books Canada Inc. 3. You could look in St George's Anglican church records. That was the first church in the Sydney area, and reported marriages other than Anglican. Just a note, The first Presbyterian church in Port Morien was much earlier than 1965. It became St. John's united church when the union came about in 1925.There could be some records that could help in their archives. -----Original Message----- From: can-ns-capebreton-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:can-ns-capebreton-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Donna Walford Sent: October 4, 2010 7:36 PM To: can-ns-capebreton@rootsweb.com Subject: [Cape Breton Co NS] Early Marriages Hi Everyone: John and Catherine are my ggrandparents and I have not been able to find a marriage certificate for them. Born in New Waterford, April 23, 1934, she was a daughter of the late Grant and Hilda (MacPhee) Campbell. Until recently, Betty resided with her family on "Carpenter's Hill", River Ryan, and was a devout member of St. Leonard's parish. Receiving her early education in New Waterford, Betty graduated from Holy Angels Convent High School and in 1954 from Nova Scotia Teachers' College. She taught Grades 3 to 6 at Saint Agnes Elementary School in New Waterford. In 1960, she met Louis, her husband-to-be and best friend, and they married on July 1, 1961. Following the birth of her first child, she took a hiatus from teaching, choosing instead, to be a stay at home wife and mom. She returned to teaching in the early 1970s in the New Waterford and area schools as a substitute. Much of her time was spent at the school directly across the street from her home, St. Michael's Elementary. In 1988, Betty officially retired from teaching when she became a grammy, a role she could not wait for and adored. Most of all, Betty loved her family and friends and the pleasure of their company. We always knew there would be a feed of spaghetti and meatballs when we came home (Mary's recipe circa 1971) and most certainly a cup of tea and a little something to go with it. Betty especially enjoyed attending her niece, Dana's wedding in Ottawa in September 2007, as this was a great opportunity for a family reunion. She was a well-known woman of few words and one who never complained ... a trait that was clearly evident as she so bravely faced each health challenge. Surviving are her loving husband of 49 years, Louis; her children, Shannon (Alan Cameron), Halifax, and Stephen (Renee), McMinnville, Tenn., U.S.A.; granddaughters, Lauren Cox, Shelby Nearing, Layne (Chad) Mullins and Grace Cameron; brother, Lionel (Vivienne), Ottawa; sister, Mary (Connie) Morrison, Sydney; brothers and sisters-in-law, Fran Campbell, Greg (Norma) Nearing, Joan (Charlie) MacLean, Karen (Art) Fraser; 19 nieces and nephews and dear caregivers, Gloria, Lorraine and Jennifer McNeil, whose presence made it possible for her to remain at home as long as possible. She was predeceased by her siblings, Maureen Anthony and Kevin Campbell, sister-in-law, Frances 'Cookie' Nearing and brother-in-law, Reg Anthony. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Oct. 6 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Betty will take place Thursday, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. Cremation will follow with burial in St. Michael's Cemetery at a later date. A luncheon will be held in the Carmel Centre immediately following the funeral mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of one's choice. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca. "The Angels sang "Amazing Grace", The Lord came down and touched her face. He held her hand and whispered low, Come with Me it's time to go. The gates of Heaven opened wide And the angels lined up side by side. A special gift was on her way, The day God took her home." ******************************************* Shirley Foote Born in: North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 04/10/2010 Shirley Cecilia Foote, 71, of Truro, passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, surrounded by her loving family, in the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Terence Robert Pittman Born in: London, United Kingdom Passed away in: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 24/09/2010 Terry passed away in Halifax on Oct. 1, 2010, at the age of 69 years, following an accident on Sept. 24, 2010. Dad was born in London, England, to the late Frank and Helen Pittman during the London bombings and at a young age was evacuated to the countryside for safety. Despite the difficult circumstances around his early childhood, dad excelled in school and in life. Dad spent all of his work life in the shipping industry both at sea and on land. It was while at sea and travelling to Sydney that dad met mum, Connie Pittman. They married 47 years ago at Holy Redeemer and shortly after their wedding moved to England where they lived until dad was 33 years old. At that time, looking for work on land, we immigrated to Canada where dad had obtained a job as a marine pilot. Dad worked as a Cape Breton pilot with the Atlantic Pilotage Authority for 35 years until his retirement. Dad's passion for the sea and shipping continued into his retirement where he was the chair of the Sydney Port Corp., working tirelessly to revitalize Sydney harbour. In addition to his work within the shipping industry, dad had many hobbies, talents and interests. Dad and mum sponsored foster children overseas and hosted an international exchange student who continues a close relationship to this day. Dad was a passionate gardener and was proud to tell anyone about plants and flowers he was trying to grow. He enjoyed golf and reading when given the time. He and mum own property in Baddeck that he got pleasure from working at. He enjoyed travelling including a recent cross-Canada road trip, spending time in western Canada visiting two of his children and his grandchildren there and also visiting England and Spain. Dad and mum were looking forward to even more travel. Dad enjoyed the arts and theatre and was a misguided Boston Bruins fan who never gave up hope of them winning a Stanley Cup again. Dad was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren and revelled in their successes. As a lifelong learner, and with a strong commitment to education, dad with mum, supported and encouraged formal and informal education and whenever the opportunity arose, a teachable moment ensued. Although he often joked about being an honorary Cape Bretoner, he was passionate about the island and worked hard to give back to it. He has touched many people in his life evidenced by the outpouring of support during this difficult time. We will miss dad immensely as he still had much life in him and many lessons to teach us. He could turn his hand to anything - plumbing, carpentry, landscaping, electrical work and cooking. He was a mentor to many and a hero to his children and grandchildren. Dad was a stellar individual and a true gentleman. He will be terribly missed by his loving wife, Connie (Collins) Pittman and his four daughters, Debra and Gary Samek - Nicola and Brendan; Angela and Glenn Gouthro - Fiona, Sarah and Marc; Marion - Gavin; and Kate and Richard Hines - Lauren, Cole and Ben. Terry is also survived by his two sisters, Heather and Valerie, both in England, and his brother, Kevin, England. There are many other family members in Canada and England who will miss dad. As a family, we have been touched by the caring actions and calls of support that have come from many places. Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 5 at Sydney Memorial Chapel. A celebration of dad's life will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment will take place at a later date. 1. Re: [Cape Breton Co NS] early churches
    2. many thanks for the information, Carol, this is extremely helpful. I forgot to mention River Denys/Dennis in my list of places, probably covered by Whycocomagh? where would I find records for the churches listed? the most promising sounding one for me is the Whycocomagh one, though there are others which may apply. best, Cornelia in partly sunny (or partly cloudy) Oregon. On Sun 10/03/10 1:40 PM , Carol MacLean ritam@axion.net sent: Greetings Cornelia, In the early parts of Cape Breton, there weren't a lot of churches, but had traveling ministers, some from as far away as PEI & Scotland. Many of the older churches were made of log & wood, and in most cases, the churches had fires & with the parish records being kept in the church, were also burned. So many records are lost, unless it was a traveling minister who may have recorded the info into the books of another parish, some in PEI & Scotland. In the 1860's, the government of the time, required folks to register the birth, marriage & death of folks, and did so for about 15 years in Nova Scotia. It was started up again in 1908, and continues to today. Some other provinces & territories went uninterrupted in the keeping of these records. St. George's Anglican Church in Sydney, was opened in 1791, and served many denominations, although it was Church of England. St Patrick's in Sydney was RC about 1828 & Sacred Heart RC in about 1832 St. Paul's Church of Scotland in Port Morien I think was around 1860's as well as St. Mary's Anglican Church. In Loch Lomond, is where the first Presbyterian church was established in 1838 In St. Ann's, Rev Norman MacLeod established a Church of Scotland around 1820 made of logs. In 1840 a frame church was built. In Louisbourg, traveling ministers from France tended to the RC followers. Traveling missionaries came as early as 1629 to some areas of Cape Breton, but no real church was established at the time. Churches in Baddeck were established in the 1840's, which would include Whycocomagh, Lake Ainslie, Middle River. On the other side of the water, was East Bay, Big Pond, Middle Cape, Irish Vale, Iona, Bras d'Or, Jamestown etc. Still others were established in Mabou, Cheticamp & areas. And others were in Cape North area. *************************************** I just found this listing of churches in Cape Breton, some with established dates and from which county.
