Born in North Sydney, N.S. on Jan. 7, 1944, he had for many years been a resident of the Burlington/Hamilton area in Ontario. He was the youngest son of A.J. and Edna (nee MacNeil) MacDonald of North Sydney. He will be greatly missed by his former wife, Diane Greenwell and their children, Deanna, Tokyo, Japan, Randy, Hamilton, and Mitzi, Sydney, Australia. He was a loving, doting father and we will miss his humour, hugs and kind heart. He is also survived by his sister, Sylvia, Detroit, USA, and brother, Sandy, Waterloo, Ont. Born in Glace Bay, N.S. on Oct. 29, 1912, Don was the son of John Edward and Catherine (MacKinnon) MacDonald. Don was predeceased by brothers, Archibald, Russell, Delbert and sisters, Lillian (Alex McLennan) and Margaret (Mack King). Don is survived by his loving wife, May (Dawson); daughters, Elizabeth (Dr. Tony Wade), Bathurst, Wendy (Bruce Phillips), Saint John; sons, Bill (wife Judy), Dartmouth, Jim (wife Anne), New Glasgow; 14 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Don served in the Royal Canadian Navy from June 1942 until his discharge in December 1945, aboard seven ships mainly in the North Atlantic Theatre. After serving his country, Don returned to the S & L Railway (later Cumberland and Devco Railway) where he retired at the age of 65 in 1977. His love was family and he always placed his family first. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 64 years. He loved hockey; an avid player (eight years with the British Consols in Glace Bay) and follower of his favourite NHL teams. His favourite pastime was writing letters to family and friends. All who knew Don will miss his inner strength, compassionate quiet demeanour, his positive outlook and encouraging words. A short service will be held for family with no visitations or funeral services. Cremation has taken place and interment will take place at the Greenwood Cemetery in Glace Bay at a future date. Born in South Haven, she was the daughter of the late Alex and Catherine (Stowe) MacLeod. Evelyn spent many years being a caregiver for others. She loved sharing stories of the past and had wonderful sense of humor. She also enjoyed jumping in her car and going on an adventure. On November 1, 2010 our mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Rita, was called back home suddenly and we will forever miss her. Born to Mary (Molly) Flemming and Michael (Mickey) A. MacNeil on October 14, 1923, Rita spent many years in New Waterford before moving to Labrador City where she lived with her husband Thomas (Tommy) MacNeil and raised their family. They later retired to New Waterford where they lived for many years until moving to Halifax to be with their children. Rita always considered New Waterford to be her "home" and it is where she will be laid to rest. Rita is survived by her children Colleen MacNeil ,Halifax, Anthony (Cecelia) MacNeil ,Sackville, and Judy (John) Lewis, Brighton, Ontario; six grandchildren Matthew, Aaron, Justin, Lauren, Stephanie, and Zachary will dearly miss their "Nana" and her loving hugs, encouragement, and baked goodies. Rita is also survived by her brother, Russell MacNeil and many neices and nephews whom she loved very much. Rita was predeceased by her loving husband, Tommy and her sisters and their husbands, Mary MacLeod ("Ecky"), "Lottie" MacNeil ("Uggs"), and her brother and his wife Gussie MacNeil ("Rita") and her sister-in-law Isabel MacNeil (wife of Russell). She was also predeceased by her infant granddaughter, Jennifer, and by her parents, Molly and Mickey MacNeil. Rita was a member of the Parish Church of St.Leonard, formerly Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford. All who knew Rita will remember her as a humble, kind, and fun-loving soul and will forever be better people for having been touched by Rita's life. Her faith was and always will be her greatest legacy to her family and her example of humility and grace will never be forgotten. Rita lived her life as sacrifice to all whom she loved. She had been residing at the Congregation of Notre Dame Health Care Center, MacGillivray Guest Home, Sydney, since May, 2010. Born Feb. 8, 1912, Mae was a longtime resident of Whitney Pier and member of Holy Redeemer parish. She was a daughter of the late Ronald and Mary Louise (Berthier) Dawe; granddaughter of Robert Roderick and Norah (Hall) Dawe of Newfoundland and George Damase and Charlotte Caroline (Landry) Berthier of L'Ardoise. She was predeceased by husband, Neil James MacDonald; sisters, Charlotte Dawe and Patricia (Dan Hugh McInnis), Antigonish and brother, Harold Dawe (Alice Young), South Bar, Cape Breton. After graduating from the Nova Scotia Normal College in 1930, Mae began teaching at Cape George School, Ballantyne's Cove, Antigonish. She also taught at Low Point, (the present New Victoria, Cape Breton County). Her family grown, she returned to teaching in Sydney at Villanova Elementary and Holy Redeemer High School and in 1976 retired from Holy Angels High School. Her love of learning and the extensive breadth of her interests were lifelong. She continued to read widely, and to be a wise friend and advisor to her five children. As our mother wished, cremation has taken place and the immediate family will attend a service of interment at St. Joseph's Cemetery, New Victoria. Her greatest enjoyment in life was providing a wonderful home for her loving family. Genevieve was the foster daughter of the late John Alex and Elizabeth MacNeil of Ottawa Brook, N.S. She was employed for many years at Imperial Optical Co. in Toronto and on retirement she returned to Sydney, N.S. The past year and a half she resided at Alderwood Rest Home where she received excellent care. Genevieve was a faithful parishioner of St. Anthony Daniel parish in Sydney. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a foster brother Leo Bonaparte. She will be missed be nieces, nephews and cousins. In honouring Genevieve's wishes, there will be no visitation. Born in Glace Bay, William was the youngest of four sons born to William and Lucy Blunden (nee Butts). William was the last surviving member of his immediate family. William was predeceased by his wife, Lillian (MacKay) Blunden in 1999. In his younger years, William worked with the bank and then began his career in the car selling business where he excelled immensely until his retirement in 1999. William is survived by his son, Greg (Tania), Bangor, Maine; and by his daughter, Kelly (Brad Smith), with whom he resided. He is also survived by grandchildren, Gregory, Michael, Ryan and Connor Binder and William and Katie Blunden. He is also survived by 12 nieces and nephews including his niece, Pammie who was like a daughter to him; and by his brother-in-law, Robert MacKay. Besides his parents and his wife, William was also predeceased by brothers, Gilbert, Robert and Kelso, their wives and by sister-in-law, Muriel MacKay. Dianne was born in New Waterford on March 15, 1946; she was the daughter of the late Damien and Elise (Wilcox) Detienne. She was a member of Calvin United Church. Dianne was a loving, loyal and devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend, always putting others before herself. She was an accomplished seamstress, a great cook and enjoyed playing darts. Dianne is survived by three sons, Bobby (Marlene), Billy (Karen) and Sheldon (Debbie); daughter, Denise; grandchildren, Alisha, Callie, Caitlyn, Brendan, Alex, Savannah; brothers, Jackie (Karen), Leo, Jimmy (Kay) Willie (Kim), sisters, Deloris (Lenny), Darlene (Charles); many nieces and nephews; special friends, Catherine McMullin, Murgie Campbell, father of her three sons, and Janet Hanrahan. She has a special place in her heart for animals especially her three cats. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her brother, Damien and her companion, Blair MacIsaac. Hilda was born July 11, 1919, in North Harbour, Placentia Bay, N.L. Her parents were Josiah and Eliza (Reid) Pafford. One of 12 children, she is survived by her youngest brother, Harold Pafford of Corner Brook. When her mother remarried after her father's death due to illness Hilda became part of a combined family of 20 children. Hilda completed her education in St. John's and moved to Corner Brook where she met and married her first husband Harold Gabriel in 1938. They raised their family of six children in Sydney. Hilda had fond memories of her time working at Colby Market and the Salvation Army and after she was widowed in 1964 realized a childhood dream of operating a grocery store as owner of Hillside Dairy on George Street in Sydney. At 53, she started a career as owner of a hotel/ boarding house on Brazil Square in St. John's. She worked tirelessly there to provide a home atmosphere for her guests, often entire families from coastal communities visiting relatives in hospital. While in St. John's, Hilda met and married her second husband, Bill Lake. They shared a happy marriage in Sydney and Newfoundland until his death in 2005. Hilda regularly attended Christ Church in Sydney where she volunteered in the Altar Guild. An avid reader, she valued learning and encouraged all her children to educate themselves. All those who have known Hilda will remember her as a loving person whose life was centered on her home, family and friends. Tony was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Brockville Rifles, and upon returning he married his wife of 64 years, Catherine (McNeil) Orychock. Tony worked as an electrician at Sydney Steel and retired from the electrical department as a supervisor in 1984. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family whether it was regular Sunday dinners 'down the Bar' or on the dance floor at family functions from weddings to Old New Years. Tony loved having gatherings at the house with music being played surrounded by family and friends. Tony is survived by his wife, Catherine; and their five sons, Tony (Dale), Donald (Susan), Paul (Rita), Lorne (Jennifer), Michael (Amber) and daughter-in-law, Glenda Orychock, all of Sydney. Born in Westchester Mountain, Cumberland Co. on Feb.12, 1915, Emerson was the eldest son of the late Stanley and Juanita (Tupper) Rogers. While serving in the Second World War, he met and married his wife of 59 years, Betty (Weymss) Rogers in St. Andrews, Scotland. When the war ended, they settled in Sydney Forks and had three children, Bryon (Heather), Northside East Bay, Arthur (Jean), Meadows Road and their only daughter, Florence (Vernon) Oakley, Sydney Forks. For many years, he worked at Chappels Building Supplies until he went to the Sydney Post Office, where he worked until he retired in 1980. Emerson was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 151, where he served as president and treasurer. He was also a longtime volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Emerson is survived by his children; four brothers, Prescott, Charles, Al and Douglas; seven grandchildren, Cheryl Rogers (Bain), Shaelene, Blair, Charlene, Jason, Meghan and Walter. After she married, she taught in New Waterford at Mount Carmel Elementary, where she taught for 35 years. Audrey is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Leonard Stephenson. Together they raised two children, Joanne (Fred) Gillis and Mary Anita (Allen) McCormick. She was a loving Nana to Liam and Anna Gillis and Jessica and Kyle McCormick. Audrey is also survived by her sister, Rita Morrison; brothers, John and Myles Farrell; and many relatives and friends. Jim was predeceased by his parents James Ignatius Attwood and Nora (nee Parsons). Fr. Jim was the oldest of seven children and had a zest for life, loved music, reading and travel. He dedicated his life to his ministries and friends and could always be called upon. Jim is survived by one sister and five brothers, Wilfred (Marilyn), Craig (Lucy), Cathy MacMillan (Rod), Peter (Joan), Brad and Basil (Shannon). Jim is also survived by 14 nieces and nephews who were very fond of their Uncle Jim. Jim was ordained on Aug. 8, 1989, at Holy Cross in Glace Bay for the Diocese of Antigonish by the Most Rev. Colin Campbell. From 1989 to 1990, he served at St. Joseph in Bras d'Or, St. Anne in Alder Point, St. Joachim in Boularderie (associate); from 1990 to 1991 at Holy Redeemer in Sydney (associate); from 1991 to 1993 at St. Peters in Larry's River, St. Joseph in Charlos Cove, St. Joseph in Port Felix (pastor); from 1996 to 2002 at St. Augustine in Sydney (pastor); from 2002 to 2005 at St. Agnes in New Waterford, St. Joseph in New Victoria, St. Alphonsus in Victoria Mines (pastor); from 2005 to 2007 at Immaculate Conception in Bridgeport, St. Eugene in Dominion, St. James in Gardiner (pastor) and from 2007 to the present at St. Joseph and Our Lady of Sorrows in North Sydney (pastor). Jim graduated from St. Michael Senior High in Glace Bay, 1971; graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1983 with a BA major philosophy; attended St. Augustine's Seminary and St. Basil's College, Toronto School of Theology, University of Toronto from 1985 to 1989, MDiv, STB. He raised dairy and beef cattle, and during the early years he marketed milk, beef and produce throughout the local area using a horse and wagon. He was named post master of the Dunvegan Post Office in 1955 and he delivered the mail daily to the post office in Chimney Corner. Dad was a strong believer in, and had a deep rooted loyalty to the co-operative and credit union movement. In 2000, he received the Distinguished Co-operator Award recognizing the 25 years he served as director and president of the board of the Inverness Filene Credit Union as well as 15 years as a director and president of the board of the Shean Co-operative. Dad was chairman of the Dunvegan Home and School Association for 10 years, trustee of the Inverness School Board for 12 years and board member of the Inverness Federation of Agriculture for seven years. He drove the school bus with competence and care for many years. His determination that everyone be treated with fairness saw him selected president of his CUPE local. In 1997, the Broad Cove Scottish Concert was dedicated to Mom and Dad, recognizing their lifelong contributions to both the parish and to the concert. He is lovingly survived by his wife of 57 years, Christene (MacLellan) and their 10 children, D.J. (Andrea), Mary (Jim), Siena (Michael), Christene, Rory (Donna), Donalda (Christopher), Theresa (Shawn), Ann (Eric), Augusta (Gary), Colonel (Cheryl) and 23 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Catherine Grant, Sr. Anne MacLeod, Margaret MacLellan and brother Rev. A.J. MacLeod. He was predeceased by his parents, DanJoe and Mary Belle (Collins) and his brothers Collins, Donald, J.D., Alex, Finlay, Fr. Colonel and his sister, Aurelia. Visitation will be held Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, Broad Cove. During the Second World War he was a member of the RCAF and served in Canada and overseas. He was a member of John Bernard Croak VC branch 003. In Donkin, he was a well known Donkin bus service driver and was very active at St. Luke's United Church. He then spent 30 enjoyable years working at Seaboard Power Plant. Bowling, skating, dancing, watching sports and music were his main interests. Jimmie was an accomplished button accordion player and used his talent to play for seniors' parties and at the homes for special care all over the CBRM. His band was usually referred to as 'The MacLeans" and was comprised of Jimmie and his wife, brother Fraser and sister-in-law the late Georgie MacDonald. This activity gave him great enjoyment. He is survived by his wife of almost 62 years, Rodena (Matheson) MacLean; his daughter, Audrey (Robin) Barrett, Beaver Bank, N.S., and cherished granddaughter, Rilla; brother, Fraser (Joan) MacLean, Donkin; brothers-in-law, Holmes (Sheila) and Grant (Nancy) Matheson and sister-in-law, Margaret (Garry) Wilcox, all in Ontario; and numerous nieces and nephews. Born in Glace Bay, April 29, 1908, Jennie was the daughter of the late Alexander and Sarah Jane (MacLeod) McDonald and stepmother, Sara (MacCuish) McDonald. She was a longtime member of the United Church of Canada and in more recent years was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Sydney. In Jennie's earlier years, before marrying the love of her life Layton Morrison, she was employed as a commercial clerk with Maritime Tel & Tel. She had a great sense of humour and a very quick wit. Her greatest enjoyment in life was providing a wonderful home for her loving family. Jennie also enjoyed her outings with her son Harold and visits from her family and friends. She will be sadly missed by her son, Harold, Glace Bay; cousins, Catherine Zellmer, Betty Engstrand, both of Florida, Inglis MacAulay, Clarence Miller, both of Glace Bay, Eileen McDonald, Westmount, Wally McDougall, Halifax; nieces, nephews and friends. Jimmy was, in early years, a member of the armed forces, Black Watch Squadron serving in Gagetown, Cyprus and Germany. In his later years he was employed by Scotsburn Dairy, retiring after 25 years of service. Jimmy was a man of simple tastes, whose greatest enjoyments came from his family, home and friends. He loved cars, especially antiques, spending time with his friends down at Cliff's garage, but perhaps his greatest enjoyment was spending time with his much-loved granddaughter, Emma. He enjoyed hockey and while serving with the Canadian Armed forces was a starting goalie with the armed forces team playing overseas in Germany and other European countries. Jimmy had great faith and although he suffered greatly over the past 10 months with his illness, he always demonstrated courage, perseverance and determination with quiet dignity. He was always so appreciative of the kindness of others who cared for him whether great or small. Milie worked in the coal mines, then changed his career and became a steam fitter. He was a member of the Pipe Fitters and Plumbers Union, Local 682 and was always there to lend a helping hand to his brethren. Milie was a veteran of the Korean War, serving overseas at a young age of 19. Milie received the Canadian Peacekeeper's Service Medal. He was also a member of the Army, Navy, Airforce, New Waterford. Milie loved gardening, playing the piano, guitar and singing with his wife, Jeanette. He also enjoyed camping in Gabarus and playing a good game of bingo. But mostly, Milie will be remembered as a very caring man who loved his family. He especially enjoyed Sunday afternoons when the family would get together and enjoy a good meal and have lots of laughs. Milie is survived by his wife, Jeanette (Doyle) Tighe; two daughters, Sharon Ann Pitts (William 'Bill'), Sydney Mines, Emily Darlene Burdge (Glendon), Sydney Forks; seven sons, David Myles (Jenny), Victoria Mines, Edward Daniel (Anne), Sydney, Darrel Thomas (Michelle), Glace Bay, Donald Germaine (Jerrylynn), New Victoria, J. Al was born to Walter Dugas and Theresa Dugas (Arsenault) of Alder Point, N.S. in 1917. He spent the end of his time with his dear wife Sallyjean Dugas (Connor) in their home in Nanaimo. Al is survived by three sons, Dan Dugas, Empress, Alta., Bob Dugas (Barbara), Courtenay, B.C., and Gerry Dugas (Dinorah), Burnaby, B.C.; and daughter-in-law, Diana. Al was predeceased by wife, Patricia Lillian Dugas (Sloan) on Aug. 28, 1995, sisters, Genevieve Gillis, Marguerite O'Shea, Gertrude Walker, Melita Bungay, brothers, Justin Dugas, Reginald Dugas and Gregory Dugas. Al has 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Al left Nova Scotia at the age of 15 and 'rode the rails' across Canada to Vancouver and was later part of the Great Depression, Relief Camps, and the historical "On to Ottawa" trek of 1935. The trekkers were corralled in Regina by police with machine guns and had the message delivered by the then Prime Minister R.B.Bennett, "tell the boys we'll give them bullets instead of bread." Al was very fond of boating, camping and travelling. He always had many stories and jokes to share and even in his later days had an amazing memory for names and details. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. She will be sadly missed and forever loved by her devoted husband, Robert, who never left her side from the day they met. She is also survived by her daughter, Lana Spears and partner, Charles Pellerine, Guysborough County; son, Robert 'Bobby' Spears and his wife Melinda, Donkin; her special granddaughter at home, Angie (for whom she shared a very special bond with her love, devotion, care and compassion). Ritie was a gifted seamstress and would astound us with curtains and coverings made completely by hand. She loved going to bingo with her mother and nieces. In younger years Ritie with her husband Danny a decorated and dedicated veteran of World War II spent many hours dancing the night away at Branch 40 and Branch 03 Legions. She had a special place in her heart for cats, especially for Newt and Snowflake. Ritie had a special bond with her nieces and nephews as was seen on her 90th birthday when Catherine's family surprised her with an impromptu visit. Ritie will be sadly missed by her devoted caregivers Kathy and Mike Hurley, who made it possible for her to remain in the home she loved for many extra years. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Thomas & Ethel (Johnston) Carrigan. Gus was a coal miner, working his entire career in No. 12 Colliery. During the Second World War, he served four years with the Canadian Armed Forces in Newfoundland. Gus was a former member of St. Agnes Church. In his youth, he was a well known violin player. In the early 1930s he played with the youth orchestra, 'The Kindergarden Seven' at various dances throughout the area and on local radio stations. Gus is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rose (Stepaniak) Carrigan; one daughter, Cecilia (Larry) Skinner, Owen Sound, Ont.; one son, Gregory (Lynda Moffatt) Carrigan, Port Hawkesbury; five grandchildren, Blayne, Lisa, Stephen, Roselle and Christopher and six great-grandchildren. Gus was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was also predeceased by sisters, Evelyn McKinnon and brothers, Fr. Harvey and Angus Steele. He graduated in Arts from St. Francis Xavier University and in medicine from the University of Ottawa. Prior to completing a residency in surgery, he was a general practitioner in Inverness and New Waterford. For over 30 years he was a surgeon in Halifax and taught at Dalhousie University Medical School. He was president of the Medical Society of Nova Scotia, president of the Provincial Medical Board and registrar of the Provincial Medical Board, prior to his retirement. Marilyn attended Provincial Normal College and taught in New Waterford schools for three years before moving to Ontario. After her marriage to Bill, they travelled to Denver where they have made their home for over 50 years. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Charles and Violet (Babe Watkins) Libbus. He was a pipe welder and construction worker for 50 years, also a former member of the Boilmakers union, UA Pipefitters union of Antigonish (local 244) before becoming a member of local 682, UA of plumbers & fitters in Sydney for the past 35 years. Charlie was an avid hunter, fisherman and in his later years loved to bird hunt with his faithful and constant companion 'Gabby', who will miss him greatly. For the last number of years Charlie would be seen on the weekends travelling to Sydney to go "skeet shooting", a sport he loved dearly, with all of his buddies at the C.B. Trap & Skeet Club. He will be remembered by family and friends for his warm smile, easy going nature, sense of humour, for making people laugh, and for always having a joke to tell, as well as his love of children and animals. He will be sadly missed by his best friend and loving wife of 52 years, Madaline (Cook); also his five children: son, Cal, Alberta; daughters, Lavenia (Sid) Hardiman, Patricia (Rodney) Fougere, both of St. Peters, Melissa (Sandy) MacKay, Calgary and Lorena (Jason) Mann, Shubenacadie. (Allan) Googoo, all from Eskasoni. She also had 80 grandchildren, 153 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren. She was an expert in basket making, bead working and sewing and taught these crafts in Eskasoni, N.S., Lennox Island, and Morell, P.E.I., Gesgapegiag, Quebec, Conne River, Nfld. and surrounding Mi'kmaq communities. She had gone to many craft shows and demonstrations that showed her crafts such as EXPO '67 and The Smithsonian Museum, Washington, DC. She even voyaged from Halifax to New York on a Tall Ship and on arrival she demonstrated her basket making. She was instrumental in keeping the Mi'kmaw culture alive by passing on Mi'kmaq traditions such as language, prayer, dance, song, and Waltes. She was a great historian and storyteller. She was the first woman band councillor in Eskasoni. She was on the Native Women Association, Eskasoni School Mi'kmaw Language Elders Committee, Homemakers Club. She worked at the Mi'kmaw Lodge until she was 93 years old. She was the "Role Model of the Year" from the Eskasoni High school during the school year 2000-01. Eskasoni Fisheries named a fishing vessel "Dr. Granny" in her honour. She received an Honorary Doctorate from St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, in 1994. She was a foster parent to many children since the 1950s and she continued to care for children up until recently. She was a nurturing mom to many. She will be greatly missed for her humour and she touched the lives of whoever met her. She will continue to be in many conversations in years to come. Colin was born and raised in New Waterford. He was the son of the late John A. MacDonald (Jack the widow) and Margaret (MacLellan) MacDonald. He was employed with the Dominion Coal Company for 21 years as a Mining Official in #16 and #18 collieries. In 1955, he became a member of the New Waterford Mine Rescue Team. Later in 1958, as captain of his team, he assisted the rescue effort at the Spring Hill Mine disaster. In 1960, he started his own business, Ocean Fuels Ltd., River Ryan, which remains in the family today. In 1967, he accepted the position of mining inspector and later supervisor of mine inspections with the Provincial Department of Labour until his retirement in 1989. Colin was a devoted parishioner of the former St. Michael's parish, now St. Leonard's. He was a life-long member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 3209 New Waterford. He enjoyed wood working, reading and working around his yard, camping in Englishtown Ridge and making his daily visits to Ocean Fuels. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed by his daughters, Colleen Tighe and Anita Tatlock (Derek); sons, John (Diane), Lawrence (Barbara), Raymond (Lorraine), all of River Ryan; sister, Ella MacDonald of Detroit, Mich. Colin was known as "Papa" by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Born and raised in Lingan, C.B., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Theresa (Handrahan) MacMillan. Mary worked in Worcester, Mass., for 42 years before retiring and returning to Lingan in June of 2010. While in Worcester, she was a devoted catholic and choir member of Christ the King Church. She was a lifetime member of the Miraculous Medal Association. Mary was also a member of the Lingan Dart League. She was a kind, loving person who enjoyed a good book, needle pointing, skating and being with her family. Mary is survived by her only sister, Doreen (Fred) Sponagle, New Victoria; four brothers, Walter (Mary Alice), Frankie, both in Sydney, Greg (Mary Jane), Big Pond, Bart (Tillie), Lingan; nine nieces; four nephews; two grandnieces and one grandnephew. Also left to mourn Mary's death is her aunt, Sr. Frances Gertrude of Sisters of Charity, Halifax; cousins in Cape Breton, Worcester, Chicago; and her many friends she made over the years in Worcester, Mass. Sparrow - April 24, 1926 to October 15, 2010 - The last surviving member of his family, Joseph G. Sparrow passed peacefully with his family by his side at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex. Born and raised in Reserve Mines, he was the son of the late Dr. Cecil and Helen (Tobin) Sparrow. Survivved by his devoted wife of 63 years, Loretta (Deveaux). Six sons, Cecil, Manny, Joey, Kelly (Iris), Colin (Ruth), Gerry (Denise). Three daughters, Starla (Cecil) MacQueen, Joanne (Fabian) Lahey and Doreen. Predeceased by brothers, Alex, Henry, Eddy and Emanuel who died in action during WWII and sisters, Vin, Elaine, Jane, Murial and a niece Betty. A WWII veteran, Joe served in the armed forces from 1942-1946. A machinist by trade, he retired from Cape Breton Development Corporation. A patriotic man, he dedicated his time to Veteran Affairs. He served on the executive of Branch 40 Legion for twelve years. President for seven year, Cape Breton District Commander from 1987-1989, Zone Commander Zone 4, 1989, three consecutive terms, Poppy Chairman of the Provincial Command, President Cape Breton District Comfort Fund for 25 years, representing 29 Branches in Cape Breton, NS. He was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal and the Palm Leaf. He was also President of the Glace Bay Seniors Pensioner Club for seven years, President of Branch 2 Legion named in honour of his father, Dr. Cecil John Sparrow. She served in numerous offices including, president, treasurer and executive office, as well as having served as convener of several committees. An avid and competitive curler, mom enjoyed many years as a member of the Sydney Curling Club. She served on the executive and for several years coached the junior curlers. A kind and generous spirit, mom welcomed everyone into her home and heart. For many years, mom's Boxing Day parties were a highlight of the Christmas season. Every August for 25 years, mom hosted the annual games day celebrations at Jager's Cove in Grand Mira North, where family and friends gathered for a day of fun. Cremation has taken place. Kenneth passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Birch Grove in the family home, Kenneth was the son of the late John Archibald and Blanche Muriel (Spencer) MacRury. He was self employed for many years. He worked as an accountant at National Sea for 14 years (1978-1992). He was manager at H & R Block and he also was an enumeration supervisor with Census Canada. He was treasurer of Victoria Presbyterian Church for 50 plus years. He was on the board of directors of Co-op Atlantic, Glace Bay. He was trustee of the Birch Grove School. Kenneth was very interested in municipal, provincial and federal politics. He was a well respected local historian. He had a huge garden and was delighted to share the abundance with neighbours and friends. He will be sadly missed by his sons, Allison (Lorna), Port Hawkesbury, David (Brenda), Birch Grove, Kenneth (Ingrid), Greenwood, Lewis (Susan), Windsor Junction, Gordon (Joanne), Lower Sackville; daughters, Mary (Damian) Bray, Lower Sackville, Joan (Donald) MacMillan, Birch Grove; cherished grandchildren, Jamie, Serena, Breanna, Caelan MacRury, Cindy, Sarah, Angus Bray, Fraser, David MacMillan; great-grandchildren, Olivia, Noah MacRury.
