An Island Parish - Fridays @ 7:30 pm BBC2 BARRA is a hundred times more beautiful than Craggy Island, the fictional setting of legendary Channel 4 sitcom, "Father Ted", but in some respects - the remote locations, the three parish priests - there is a resemblance. Now viewers can judge for themselves because "ISLAND PARISH", the series that chronicled life in the Isles of Scilly, has moved north to BARRA, the most southerly of the remote Outer Hebrides. which lies 85 miles off the Scottish mainland. Barra and its neighbouring island, South Uist, are unique in the Outer Hebrides. While the Northern Hebridean islands of Harris and Lewis are ultra-Prostestant, they remain fiercely Roman Catholic. Quite simply, the Reformation set in motion by Henry VIII never reached these isolated communities, and on the roadsides, you find statues and icons of the Virgin Mary in a way you never see elsewhere in Britain. On Barra, the priest is still held in very high esteem, so when the rookie, FATHER JOHN PAUL MACKINNON, arrives to take up his post, he knows the eyes of every islander will be on him. "If you sneeze here, everyone know about it within half an hour", he says with a wry smile. "And as the new priest, you're incredibly high-profile. I'll be spending my first year quietly getting to know the place and the people, rather than throwing my weight around and trying to change things. That wouldn't go down at all well". On hand to give advice in the next-door parish across the water on South Uist is FATHER RODDY MCAULEY, a larger-than-life character who's also in charge of the parish flock of sheep and even breeds his own hens. This year, father Roddy is determined to secure first prize for his magnificent cockerel Clarence at the local agricultural show. "Every year I'm pipped at the post by my arch-rival down the road, parishioner Flora Campbell, who has a fearsome reputation for breeding winners", says Father Roddy grimly. "It's time for a change, This time I'm going to win". Completing the trio of priests is 83 year-old Father Calum MacLellan, who help^s Father Roddy by looking after the hundred or so parishioners who live on tiny Eriskay, connected to the southern tip of South Uist by a causeway. Father Calum has a dry sense of humour, loves a wee dram, and even a cigarette. "I don't inhale, you see", says Father Calm, with a twinkle. So why bother to smoke at all? "My anesthetist asked me that question. I told him that since my lungs are in the best of health, it's none of his damned business. He didn't ask again". SCOTTISH ISLAND PARISH follows Father John Paul's arrival on Barra, and his first year in office, along with the growing friendship - and rivalry - between the three priests. Father John Oaul moves into the big house attached to the Catholic church with its distinctive clock-tower overlooking Barra's main harbour of Castlebay, where- weather permitting - the ferry arrives every day bearing supplies for the island after a five-hour voyage from Oban. There's a mesmerising view from the living-room window: in the distance are the stark silhouettes of the uninhabited islands of Saltray and Mingulay, shrouded in sea mist or dazzling in early-morning sunshine: and , dominating the bay, one of the most arresting sights in the Hebrides, the stunning medieval castle that is the ancestral seat of the Clan MacNeil. Despite centuries of forced emigration as a result of famine or unscrupulous landlords, (or both), MacNeil is still the most common name on Barra, and every two years, MacNeils from all over the world gather at the castle in a proud celebration of their roots. FATHER JOHN PAUL, lives alone, so one of his first talks is to grapple with the washing machine, learn how to use an iron and master the hoover. When he's tired of the house-work, he can always dip into his boxed set of "Father Ted. "I'm a huge fan of the show", he says, slightly to my surprise. "The writers definitely had inside knowledge". Another urgent mission is to learn the native Gaelic: it's the first language for many islands, like old Maggie "Scraggy Aggy" MacKinnon. "Woe betide any newcomer who fails to make an effort with the language", she warns, waving her stick. "I'll have his guts for garters, and a lot more beside, and I don't care if he is the priest"! At low tides, Scraggy Aggy can often be found on Barra's fabulous beaches, hunting for supper - clams, mussels and, above all, scallops. It's an utterly enchanting corner of the world. Weather sweeping in from the Atlantic has yet to meet the mountains, so it doesn't rain as much as the mainland and, amazingly, claims to be among the sunniest places in the country. The landscape, devoid of trees and even hedges, has a brutal, rocky fascination, giving the islands much the same feel in winter as summer. The people, bound together by their proximity to nature - and particularly the sea - have a contentment, innate hospitality and good humour that make living here seem very easy. Unlike Father John Paul, Father Roddy does have a housekeeper: she's an American called Sandy Stephens who came to South Uist on holidays from New Mexico eight years ago and never went home. "I so admire the dedication and work of the priests here", she says. "Father Roddy is a brilliant communicator, he's in such huge demand for baptisms and weddings". Sandy had fallen in love with the place so much that she's now applied for British citizenship, and has even reserved a plot for herself in the local graveyard. The parish structure here is much as it would have been everywhere in Britain before 1530. Ninety-five per cent of the population is Catholic, and even today, up to half of the islanders go to church at some stage every week, probably the highest attendance in the UK. The workload is huge and constant as the priest is central to nearly all community events. It's their devotion to their work and to the people that sets the three priests well apart for the condey of "Father Ted". "There can't be many places where the priest is automatically invited along to a parishioner's 18th birthday party", says Father Roddy, "but I'm invited to them all". There's someone at the door every ten minutes: the telephone rings endlessly. When a parishioner is seriously ill or dying, they call the priest first, then the ambulance. And yet, along with their compassion, the priests share an extraordinary sense of humour that makes them great company. Highly competitive, Father Roddy tries every trick in the book to humiliate father John Paul on the island's golf course. ("People say it's all about the 'taking part'", says Father Roddy. "It's not, it's about the winning".) Father John Paul ends up with egg on his face after taking a course in cooking so he can prepare a birthday dinner for Father Calum; and Father Roddy stuns his parishioners with a virtuoso display of hilarious conjuring tricks. You will enjoy meeting them all in the series and, believe me, your life will be much richer as a result. Nigel Farrell, series producer of Island Parish.

Katie was born at the Glace Bay Hospital and resided in the small adjoining community of Tower Road. She was the last surviving child of the late James and Violet (Aston) Jones. Katie was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Anglican Church, Glace Bay. A loving, caring and generous woman, Katie was most happy surrounded by her family and friends. Indeed, often, there was no distinction; for all enjoyed her special ability to make everyone around her feel important and cared for. Perhaps her biggest gift was as a "listener." What was told to her in confidence never was heard from her mouth. She was a comfort to many because of this. Cooking and baking for others was her pastime. When you visited Katie, you never left empty-handed. Besides her parents, Katie was predeceased by her devoted husband, William MacDonald in 1975. She is survived by her three daughters, Linda (Jude Aucoin), Fall River, N.S., Betty Lou (Victor Spencer), Tower Road, Kelly and Kelly's daughter, Brie Ann (Joey Gouthro), whom she helped raise, at home. Katie is also survived by five other grandchildren who all visited her as often as possible, Andre Aucoin, Sackville, N.S., Chere (Earl Deveau), Eastern Passage, N.S., and Bette Lou, Westmount, Lisa Spencer, Oshawa, Ont., Andrea (Conrad Stewart), Glace Bay. Katie has eight great-grandchildren, William, Rhys and Benjamin Aucoin, Payton and Nicholas Deveau, Breton and Rowan Spencer-Chang, Alexis Stewart. As much as they loved to visit Great Ma, she loved them more. Hers were the ties that bound all of us to "home." She also had numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, all special to her and always welcome. She enjoyed a lifelong affection and attraction for all children and animals. They always knew they were safe with her. Family was important to Katie, who outlived all her siblings, John, Fred, Arthur, Roderick, Leslie, James, Florence Carlson, Olive Mugford, Adelaide, Ella MacNeil and Nellie Slattery. She is survived by sisters-in-law, who quickly became honorary sisters, Margaret Holman and Ruth MacLeod, both of Tower Road. Katie owned and operated a successful small grocery business during her younger years, carrying on the family's legacy when her mother moved to Ontario. She closed the doors of this business, where her friend, Kay MacInnis, RN, said she was the community's counsellor" for all those years, just before the birth of her youngest daughter, Kelly. Visitation for Katie MacDonald will be held Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Thursday at St. Mary's Anglican Church, Glace Bay, with Rev. Judi Phillips officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment will be at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. Online condolences to the MacDonald family are available through www.vjmcgillivray.ca. *********************************** Mary 'Helena' MacNeil Born in: Christmas Island, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Christmas Island/Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 16/01/2011 Peacefully, surrounded by the people who loved her, with great sadness and heavy hearts, we regret the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and loving wife, Mary Helena MacNeil on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011. Born in her own little heaven of Earth, Christmas Island, she was the daughter of the late Hector J. MacNeil and Annie (Gillis). Mom is survived by the love of her life, her husband of 58 years, John Hector MacNeil; her beloved three daughters, Doris (Jim) MacDonald, Sydney, Anne (at home) and Florence, Sydney. Nanny is also fondly remembered by her grandchildren, Laura (Ron), J.R. (Kelly), John (Danielle) and Mark (Jannine) and as 'Old Nana' by her great-grandchildren, Lena, Brady, Makayla, Riley, Connor, Cole, Isabella, Rory and Joshua and Samantha (extended). As a sister, she will be forever loved by Margaret (late Gilbert) Shaw and Jean (Joe) MacLean, both of Dartmouth. Patiently awaiting her in heaven are sisters, Mary, Kaye, Ceceilia, Tina and her brothers, John and Hughie, as well as three siblings in infancy. A devout Catholic, she was a 36-year member of the CWL at St. Theresa parish and a member of the ladies auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion branch 138. She was an avid card player (tarabish and 45s) and a member of the Sydney Pensioners Club and Club 55. All who knew mom, knew her love for life. With eyes that sparkled even when she wasn't smiling, all who walked through her door were treated like family. She lovingly touched everyone's heart she met. This was why she would not tarnish the end of her life with a lengthy battle with cancer, passing with poise and grace at home, on her terms. Often known for her sense of humour and her strong belief in the closeness of family and loved ones, Helena will forever be remembered as friend and mother to all she embraced. Visitation for the late Mrs. MacNeil will take place Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa Church with Rev. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Cape Breton Palliative Care Society or a charity of your choice. Online condolences to www.twcurry.com. There's magic in a mother's touch and sunshine in her smile, There's love in everything she does to make our lives worthwhile, We can find both hope and courage just by looking in her eyes, Her laughter is a source of joy her words are worm and wise, There is a kindness and compassion to be found in her embrace, And we see the light of heaven shining from our Mother's face. ************************************ Evelene Needham Passed away in: Hamilton, Ontario, Canada Passed away on: 06/01/2011 The death of Evelene (Mercer) Needham occurred Jan. 6, 2011 in Hamilton, Ont. Growing up in Glace Bay he 'Gump' was an excellent athlete excelling in rugby and hockey. Lorne will be sadly missed by his sons, Peter (Maureen), New Brunswick, Rod, Coxheath, Steve (Sheila), Howie Centre; daughters, Elaine (Madeline), Dartmouth, Diane Smith (Norm), Kathy Black (Joe), Rea Coady (Paul), all of Sydney River, Fran Kelloway (Derrick), Dartmouth. Lorne was a veteran of the Second World War serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force at various bases in Canada. A graduate of St. FX and McGill Universities, Lorne had a long and distinguished career in education. He was especially proud of being one of the original teachers at Riverview Rural High School. During his 30 years, all at RRHS, he was first and foremost a physical education teacher, but also served as vice principal, a coach, a school bus driver and an outdoor education instructor which he continued to do even after his retirement in 1980. He took great satisfaction and enjoyment exposing his students to building and spending nights in lean-tos and canoeing on the Margaree River. Over his lifetime he made many lasting friendships with colleagues and he was very proud of his many students who kept in close contact with him over the years. Lorne experienced many joys during his life; Inverness was a significant part of the family experience where he and Marie spent many wonderful summer days. He undertook numerous projects, which ranged from construction to gardening. He had to be busy and as a talented handyman he was still doing his projects until very recently. He was always very physically active to the amazement of all who knew him and he loved to swim during the summer and cross-country ski during the winter. Cape Breton Post January 08, 2011 Saturday Online contest helps Boston woman trace Nova Scotia roots SYDNEY - A Boston woman with ties to Inverness is the winner of an online contest encouraging people to trace their Nova Scotia roots. Clare Donoghue won the Discover Your Nova Scotia Roots Contest on novascotia.com. The contest promoted Routes to Your Roots, an interactive online tool that helps people trace their history back to the province. More than 1,700 people entered the contest by sharing their personal connection to the province. "Congratulations to Ms. Donoghue on her exciting win," Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage Percy Paris said in a news release. " We are pleased with the strong response to the Routes to Your Roots contest. "Our leading-edge marketing tools are attracting visitors from key markets to ensure our tourism industry continues to create good jobs and grow the economy." Donoghue was chosen by random draw as the winner of a six-day trip for two to Nova Scotia and a personal session with well-known Maritime genealogist Terry Punch. The trip will be a special one for Donoghue, who used to travel to Inverness as a child. In 2008, she returned for the first time in 40 years to begin researching her family history. " Winning this trip means a lot to me. It's an exciting opportunity for my family to learn about our history in more detail," she said. "A lot of people are fascinated by their family history, discovering distant relatives, learning how they lived, and tracing that path back to its origins," said Punch, an author and popular guest on CBC Radio's Maritime Noon. "Roots to Your Routes is an invaluable tool in starting that journey, especially when you consider that 25 million North Americans have connections to this province." The Routes to Your Roots application offers valuable information and tools for anyone starting to research their family tree, including blogs, information on settlement patterns and a forum where visitors can share their experiences and ask questions. 7 Jan 2011 Cape Breton Post BY JAMIE HALL POSTMEDIA NEWS Edmonton man traces family history in 6,000 photographs If the going rate on a picture still amounts to a thousand words, Mark McIlveen's collection of family images would produce a six-million-word tome that would make War and Peace look like a pocket novel. When he finally completed the arduous task of digitizing 6,000 photographs from six generations and stood back to examine the results, it was a head-shaking moment. "It was certainly a strange visual," says McIlveen, "to have had all these boxes of albums and then spend more than a hundred hours digitizing them to wind up with a tiny little shoebox thingy of about 40 discs." Most mere mortals are overwhelmed by the prospect of sorting through even a single drawer full of unorganized photographs. Many others have photos that exist only in cyberspace, on social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook. McIlveen, though, decided to tackle the herculean task of digitizing 130 years' worth of hard-copy family photographs, some from as far back as 1880. He says it was worth the effort. "From that shoebox," says McIlveen, "many great new projects will be launched." What those projects will be is no longer his problem. That will be up to his three daughters, Linda, Laura and Erin, to whom McIlveen has passed the torch - or, in this case, shoebox. The plan, he says, was always to hand the vast collection over to them when they all graduated from university, which came to pass last month when his youngest, Erin, 24, graduated from the University of Las Vegas in Nevada. "Now it's the next generation's turn to do whatever they want with it," says McIlveen. The family photo history happened almost by accident, when McIlveen offered to help his grandparents sort through a moving box full of old photographs and get them into some semblance of order, about 30 years ago. He eventually did the same thing with his parents before they died. "It just kind of grew into a project over the years of organizing family photographs into albums," he says. "It started out as a small project, of going through one or two big boxes of unorganized pictures, which is probably something every family has. There was never an intention of creating a whole system." Laura, who's now 28, says her dad was always on the lookout for Kodak moments when they were growing up, especially during their annual summer vacations. He was also extremely organized and made sure the precious memories he documented with his camera were put into photograph albums almost immediately, rather than being tossed into a dresser drawer to be forgotten. Everything changed with the advent of digital technology, and before long McIlveen looked at his stacks of neatly ordered albums and saw an opportunity to build a digital history of his family. "Through the years we had accumulated more than 10,000 pictures," he says, "but we took the best 6,000 and digitized them to make a family history." The hard part was standing in front of the scanner at the local Wal-Mart, where each image had to be scanned individually. "The staff there knew my name," says Stephanie Melo, a family friend who helped him with the project. McIlveen figures the process took about 120 hours in total. The irony, of course, is that his daughters plan to turn at least some of the images on the CDs into pictures again, likely in the form of customized books. And that's OK with him. "Whatever they want to do is fine with me," says McIlveen with a laugh. "My job is done."
