Eric Morrison Mary Morrison Rebecca 'Becky' Tighe Sheilah MacDonald Ramona Fahey (Tighe) Kenneth MacKay Sr. Thomas Smith Bernetta 'Bernie' MacInnis Joseph LeBlanc Mary Elizabeth 'Beth' Smith ******************************************************************************************************* Eric Morrison Born in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 03/04/1989 Passed away in: Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 02/02/2011 It is with deepest sadness and regret that we must announce the death of Eric Allister Morrison. He passed away in his Dartmouth home on Feb. 2, 2011. Eric is survived by his loving parents, Fran and Bill; two older sisters, Jennifer (Michael Stainton) and Diane Morrison. He will always be remembered as a kind hearted boy who was able to get into some harmless mischief with his many friends. He was a special man with a wonderful outlook on the world and was always willing to help anyone in need. Eric's one true love was hockey. He played hockey for most of his life, including his last days with his very best friend, Sean Edwards. It takes a special kind of person to stand in a goalie net with pucks flying at you and to stand in the way of them to protect his net - this is the same approach he had with his family and friends. He had a gentle soul that gave him a special way with animals. A service will be held at Mattatall Funeral Home in Dartmouth, cremation to follow. Donations can be made in honour of Eric to suicide prevention or the charity of your choice. ********************************* . Born in Sydney, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Rosie (Rufka) Libbus and Joseph Haddad. Mom was the matriarch of our family. She cared and loved all of us and many others unconditionally. Her life was filled with hard work and many challenges but she always found time to have fun. Her Lebanese culture was a foundation for her beliefs, goodwill, and ultimately her cooking. To her grandchildren, she will always be 'Sittie'. For many years she was a member of the Daughters of Mary, St. Joseph's Syrian and Lebanese Benevolent Society. The door was always open and people were welcomed with a hot cup of boiled tea and lunch. Her grandchildren loved her special French fries. For many years she served people a smile and kind words at Kay's Kozy Korner. To her, family came first. She was a role model, and influenced each of us in our lives. We will miss her dearly. Topics : Inverness County council , Strait Regional School Board.LeBlanc , Port Hastings , Inverness County , Judique MacDonald died Wednesday following a lengthy illness. He was a longtime fixture on Inverness County council, having been elected to nine terms, and served three terms as county warden. He represented District 6, which includes the Judique-Port Hastings area. "He was a heck of a nice man, honest, didn't mince his words, if he had something to say, he got it said, he didn't go behind your back to have someone else tell you," said Gloria LeBlanc, who served with MacDonald on council for about 12 years. MacDonald - to many in the county and beyond he was simply referred to as "Red" Eddie - worked hard for his constituents, LeBlanc said. "No matter how much of a problem it was for him to get something done, he worked hard at it until he got it accomplished," she said. "His community, the people he represented, were the people who were really, really important to him." That dedication was exhibited during his illness, LeBlanc said. "He had some major lung problems and never let that deter him from his job because he went around with his oxygen tank and made sure that he got to meetings whenever he could and that he did what he was supposed to be doing. He's a good example for the rest of us," she said. "They always say when someone dies you only remember the good things. Well, there were really no bad things to remember about Eddie ... I feel terrible this morning because we're going to miss Eddie terribly." As mayor of the neighbouring municipality of Port Hawkesbury, Billy Joe MacLean served on a number of boards and agencies with MacDonald over the years. "There was nobody more stubborn or bullheaded when it came to protecting the interest of the Port Hastings country area," MacLean said. "He loved the people that he represented, he loved the job of councillor and warden. He served his community well." When approached by people who needed assistance, MacDonald did what he could to help them, MacLean said. "He got involved in people's pensions, he got involved in other personal matters outside the realm of normal municipal politics. Your problem would become Eddie's problem," he said. MacDonald is not the only member of his family to put his name forward for public office. His wife, Mary Jess, is chair of the Strait Regional School Board. LeBlanc said Thursday her thoughts were with Mary Jess, noting the couple was practically inseparable. "They were very, very close, you saw one, you saw the other." MacDonald's funeral arrangements weren't immediately available Thursday. nking@cbpost.com ******************************************************************************************************* Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CBGHA http://www.cbgen.org

Carol ******************************************************************************************************** An Island Parish - Fridays @ 7:30 pm BBC2 BARRA is a hundred times more beautiful than Craggy Island, the fictional setting of legendary Channel 4 sitcom, "Father Ted", but in some respects - the remote locations, the three parish priests - there is a resemblance. Now viewers can judge for themselves because "ISLAND PARISH", the series that chronicled life in the Isles of Scilly, has moved north to BARRA, the most southerly of the remote Outer Hebrides. which lies 85 miles off the Scottish mainland. Barra and its neighbouring island, South Uist, are unique in the Outer Hebrides. While the Northern Hebridean islands of Harris and Lewis are ultra-Prostestant, they remain fiercely Roman Catholic. Quite simply, the Reformation set in motion by Henry VIII never reached these isolated communities, and on the roadsides, you find statues and icons of the Virgin Mary in a way you never see elsewhere in Britain. On Barra, the priest is still held in very high esteem, so when the rookie, FATHER JOHN PAUL MACKINNON, arrives to take up his post, he knows the eyes of every islander will be on him. "If you sneeze here, everyone know about it within half an hour", he says with a wry smile. "And as the new priest, you're incredibly high-profile. I'll be spending my first year quietly getting to know the place and the people, rather than throwing my weight around and trying to change things. That wouldn't go down at all well". On hand to give advice in the next-door parish across the water on South Uist is FATHER RODDY MCAULEY, a larger-than-life character who's also in charge of the parish flock of sheep and even breeds his own hens. This year, father Roddy is determined to secure first prize for his magnificent cockerel Clarence at the local agricultural show. "Every year I'm pipped at the post by my arch-rival down the road, parishioner Flora Campbell, who has a fearsome reputation for breeding winners", says Father Roddy grimly. "It's time for a change, This time I'm going to win". Completing the trio of priests is 83 year-old Father Calum MacLellan, who help^s Father Roddy by looking after the hundred or so parishioners who live on tiny Eriskay, connected to the southern tip of South Uist by a causeway. Father Calum has a dry sense of humour, loves a wee dram, and even a cigarette. "I don't inhale, you see", says Father Calm, with a twinkle. So why bother to smoke at all? "My anesthetist asked me that question. I told him that since my lungs are in the best of health, it's none of his damned business. He didn't ask again". SCOTTISH ISLAND PARISH follows Father John Paul's arrival on Barra, and his first year in office, along with the growing friendship - and rivalry - between the three priests. Father John Oaul moves into the big house attached to the Catholic church with its distinctive clock-tower overlooking Barra's main harbour of Castlebay, where- weather permitting - the ferry arrives every day bearing supplies for the island after a five-hour voyage from Oban. There's a mesmerising view from the living-room window: in the distance are the stark silhouettes of the uninhabited islands of Saltray and Mingulay, shrouded in sea mist or dazzling in early-morning sunshine: and , dominating the bay, one of the most arresting sights in the Hebrides, the stunning medieval castle that is the ancestral seat of the Clan MacNeil. Despite centuries of forced emigration as a result of famine or unscrupulous landlords, (or both), MacNeil is still the most common name on Barra, and every two years, MacNeils from all over the world gather at the castle in a proud celebration of their roots. FATHER JOHN PAUL, lives alone, so one of his first talks is to grapple with the washing machine, learn how to use an iron and master the hoover. When he's tired of the house-work, he can always dip into his boxed set of "Father Ted. "I'm a huge fan of the show", he says, slightly to my surprise. "The writers definitely had inside knowledge". Another urgent mission is to learn the native Gaelic: it's the first language for many islands, like old Maggie "Scraggy Aggy" MacKinnon. "Woe betide any newcomer who fails to make an effort with the language", she warns, waving her stick. "I'll have his guts for garters, and a lot more beside, and I don't care if he is the priest"! At low tides, Scraggy Aggy can often be found on Barra's fabulous beaches, hunting for supper - clams, mussels and, above all, scallops. It's an utterly enchanting corner of the world. Weather sweeping in from the Atlantic has yet to meet the mountains, so it doesn't rain as much as the mainland and, amazingly, claims to be among the sunniest places in the country. The landscape, devoid of trees and even hedges, has a brutal, rocky fascination, giving the islands much the same feel in winter as summer. The people, bound together by their proximity to nature - and particularly the sea - have a contentment, innate hospitality and good humour that make living here seem very easy. Unlike Father John Paul, Father Roddy does have a housekeeper: she's an American called Sandy Stephens who came to South Uist on holidays from New Mexico eight years ago and never went home. "I so admire the dedication and work of the priests here", she says. "Father Roddy is a brilliant communicator, he's in such huge demand for baptisms and weddings". Sandy had fallen in love with the place so much that she's now applied for British citizenship, and has even reserved a plot for herself in the local graveyard. The parish structure here is much as it would have been everywhere in Britain before 1530. Ninety-five per cent of the population is Catholic, and even today, up to half of the islanders go to church at some stage every week, probably the highest attendance in the UK. The workload is huge and constant as the priest is central to nearly all community events. It's their devotion to their work and to the people that sets the three priests well apart for the condey of "Father Ted". "There can't be many places where the priest is automatically invited along to a parishioner's 18th birthday party", says Father Roddy, "but I'm invited to them all". There's someone at the door every ten minutes: the telephone rings endlessly. When a parishioner is seriously ill or dying, they call the priest first, then the ambulance. And yet, along with their compassion, the priests share an extraordinary sense of humour that makes them great company. Highly competitive, Father Roddy tries every trick in the book to humiliate father John Paul on the island's golf course. ("People say it's all about the 'taking part'", says Father Roddy. "It's not, it's about the winning".) Father John Paul ends up with egg on his face after taking a course in cooking so he can prepare a birthday dinner for Father Calum; and Father Roddy stuns his parishioners with a virtuoso display of hilarious conjuring tricks. You will enjoy meeting them all in the series and, believe me, your life will be much richer as a result. Nigel Farrell, series producer of Island Parish.

Surrounded by the love of her family, Mary Cecilia MacSween Ryan passed away at home Jan. 24, 2011, gently and peacefully just as she had lived her life. Born in Glace Bay, July 9, 1909, she was the youngest daughter of the late James and Sarah (MacNeil) MacSween. Cherished memories will be forever remembered by her family, Mary (John) McCullough, Toronto, David (Brenda), Sally, daughter-in-law, Elaine, all of North Sydney, and Jimmy, Mississauga. She was a very special Nana to her grandchildren, Denise, Krysteine, Kevin, Shannon, Matthew, Christopher, Michael and Colleen. She was G.G. to Jack, Lauchlan, Oscar and Callum. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren added so much to Mom's life and happiness. Mom's chair is now empty but her endearing smile, her expressive eyes and 'discreet' tilt of her head will live forever. Mom will be greatly missed but our hearts are filled with gratitude and many wonderful memories of a long lived life giving of herself. Her love, guidance, direction and support given to us will remain forever. Mom's great sense of humour and her wit will be missed. These qualities she maintained until her last day. She made us laugh. Prior to her marriage in 1942, she worked as a secretary on Parliament Hill, Ottawa, and at the general office of the Coal Company in Glace Bay. Throughout the years we have received many compliments about our mother with such adjectives as gentile, kind, warm, gracious, humorous and caring. Mom had a great sense of style, poise and flair that was recognized by one and all as a true lady of grace. She was predeceased by her husband, Capt. David Ryan (1987) and her son, Matthew, QC (2009), her parents and siblings, John (Margaret), Danny (Peggy), Wilfred, Martina (Sister Agnes Miriam), Elizabeth (Sr. Loretta), Stella, Sadie and Michael. In addition to her children and families, she is also survived by her in-laws, Rick (Mabel), Nora, Kal, all of North Sydney, and Pauline, California. Many nieces and nephews also survive. Our sense of loss is shared by Bernadette Keagan, Mom's true friend who was always there for her. She loved Mom as we did. A devout member of St. Joseph's parish, she strongly believed in the power of prayer. To the end she asked God to take care of us all. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Sydney Food Bank or a charity of your choice. Funeral directions are under the direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home. Visitation for our mom will be held Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Mass of Christian burial will take place at St. Joseph Church, Friday, Jan. 28, 2011, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jake Andrea officiating. Burial to take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. "People like Tom MacPherson don't come along often. His family will certainly be grieving, but the whole community will be grieving as well." Sharon Montgomery-Dupe - Cape Breton Post In a 2001 Cape Breton Post file photo, Tom MacPherson of Glace Bay is seen chatting with Melissa MacKinnon, a student at Glace Bay Elementary School, during one of 12 annual Christmas dinners MacPherson provided for the students at the school. MacPherson, who was known for helping those in need, died Wednesday at a Halifax hospital, with family by his side. Tom MacPherson passed away Wednesday at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, with family by his side. "Tom was a tremendous person," said Glace Bay MLA Geoff MacLellan, who grew up in the same neighbourhood as MacPherson, Table Head. "Tom constantly put his time and money, all his energy into helping people who needed it the most, even complete strangers," MacLellan added. "His family will certainly be grieving, but the community will be grieving as well. "People like Tom MacPherson don't come along often." Cecil Saccary, chair of the Glace Bay and Area Business Association, said MacPherson's death is a huge loss for Glace Bay. "He was always known as a very generous community-minded person," Saccary said. "There was not a discriminating bone in his body." Mike and Marie Ludlow had a first-hand look at MacPherson's generosity. On April 15, 2001, the Ludlow home in Broughton was destroyed by fire. They had no insurance and the couple was homeless. Marie Ludlow said the next thing they knew MacPherson was rallying the community to rebuild their house. "We told him we didn't have any money," said Ludlow. "He said not to worry, it would be all looked after." Hundreds of people took part. "I am still in awe over what he did for us," she added. For 12 years, MacPherson provided Christmas dinner with all the trimmings to students at Glace Bay Elementary School. " Tom would call and say, 'Whatever you need for the dinner go and get it and then come see me,' said Susie Royal, head of the cafeteria. "One year during the dinner the children came down and presented him with a Christmas card. "He actually cried and said, 'Now this is what it is all about.'" During one of those dinners, MacPherson was interviewed by the Cape Breton Post and he said he remembered as a little boy Santa Claus not coming to his home. "If this gives one child some enjoyment, it is worth it," MacPherson said during that interview. He was a big supporter of children's hospitals, the IWK in Halifax and the Janeway in Newfoundland and Labrador and every year he treated the local war brides to the Glace Bay Summerfest Among Our Souvenirs dinner. Joe Curry of Glace Bay, a former member of Glace Bay Summerfest, got to know MacPherson well. " There was no selling him on things, he was proud of his community and helped us with anything we needed to do with the 100th anniversary of Glace Bay and even after that he helped us," Curry said. "His wife Agnes, she serves on the altar at St. Anthony's, she is a giver herself, the two of them are people who are volunteers, always looking out for the needy." MacPherson owned a construction company. He was an active member of the Conservative party and in 2009 ran unsuccessfully as a PC candidate in the provincial election. In 2006, MacPherson was presented with the annual Carl (Campy) Crawford Award which symbolizes leadership, volunteerism, sportsmanship and equality in the community. ******* As well, Tom's brother, Neil's obit from 2009 - Calgary, Alta (Calgary Herald) MacPherson, Neil Neil MacPherson of Calgary died at Extendicare Cedars Villa on Friday, June 26, 2009 at the age of 78 years, following a brief illness after being diagnosed with dementia in 2007. Neil was born on May 22, 1931 in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, NS, fourth of twelve children to Thomas Clarke MacPherson, a coal miner, and his wife Gertrude (née Boutilier). He grew up in Glace Bay during the Great Depression and the Second World War, experiencing, but not at all comprehending, a Cape Breton church service conducted entirely in Gaelic as late as 1942. In February 1951, Neil volunteered at age 19 for active service in the Korean War with The Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR). He saw regular infantry combat as a Bren gunner in 1951-1952, including the Battle of Hill 355 ("Little Gibraltar") with "D" Company of the 1st Battalion in October 1952; his younger brother Gus also served with him in the RCR during the war. Neil twice narrowly escaped being killed by enemy mortar fire; once when a near-miss blew off his shirt except for the cuffs and collar, and another time when his bunker was demolished by a direct hit shortly after he left it earlier than usual to fetch his breakfast. In another incident, he and a fellow Canadian guided an American lieutenant and some of his men out of a minefield that the Americans had entered by accident; in gratitude, the lieutenant arranged to give Neil's unit a much sought-after jeep. Neil later qualified as an Active Force paratrooper with the RCR in the dedicated airborne role, serving as part of the NATO forces in West Germany during 1953-1955. As an acting junior non-commissioned officer, he normally sent the bulk of his monthly pay home to Glace Bay, enabling his family to build an addition to their house. He was Honourably Discharged at Wolseley Barracks, London, Ontario in February 1957 having earned the Canadian Korean Medal, the UN Service Medal for Korea, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for Korea and the Special Service Medal with "NATO" clasp. He and his wife Orma Belle (née Millman) were married in December 1962 in Prince Edward Island, having two sons, Nelson (b. 1963 in Calgary) and Andrew (b. 1966 in Summerside, Prince Edward Island). Neil and Orma were married just over thirty-eight years, with Orma offering selfless dedication and support to her husband and family under often trying circumstances. Neil resided permanently in Calgary since 1973, working in a variety of occupations until he was awarded a veteran's pension for disabilities acquired during his war-time service. Orma predeceased him there, dying of cancer on January 7, 2001. Neil is survived by his sons; his brothers, Gus, Mark, Daniel, and Thomas; and his sisters, Gertrude, Isabel, and Joan. Graveside Services will be held at Queen's Park Cemetery (3219 - 4th Street NW, Calgary) on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Nelson and Andrew would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of Extendicare Cedars Villa, particularly those in the Poplar Unit and especially unit manager Lee Ann Luciano. Their care and attention to Neil since 2007 has been exemplary, and Lee Ann's special understanding of Neil assured that he experienced the most comfortable and happy life possible throughout his residence there. In living memory of Neil MacPherson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH Telephone: (403) 276-2296. ******************************************************************************************************* Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CBGHA http://www.cbgen.org
Folks, This may be a way we can watch this series, since most of us don't live in the UK. I found a link on the BBC2 website, that allows us to watch the show the next or later that same day, after it has been aired. I was just on the site, and most likely, much later tonight, I'll use the following link. Just remember, the show is on Friday's and is a series of 12 shows. Tonight is the opening show. If my theory is correct, bookmark the site below, and change only the date at the end of the url when watching the rest of the shows. Also, make sure the month is correct. ex. two/20110121 is today's date. The 2nd week should look like two/20110128 The third week should have the month & date changed to look like two/20110204 http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/tv/bbc_two/20110121 Lets hope this works for us.
