Born in MacAdam's Lake, C.B. April 9, 1920, son of the late Duncan MacAdam and Margaret Jane (Gillis) MacAdam. Dad began his career as one of the first Co-op Insurance agents in St. Peter's, and then opened Angus MacAdam Insurance Agency as an Independent Insurance Broker in Richmond County. He was very active in the community of St. Peter's, held several positions in the Lion's Club, was a member of the school board, president of the board of directors of St. Peter's Co-op Store. He was an active member of the Roman Catholic Church. In 1988 he and mom moved to Fall River and became active in the St. Rose of Lima parish. His main concern was taking care of his family. He was a very dedicated husband, son, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle. He was a "gentle" man who enjoyed fishing, camping with his family, taking the children for walks, picnics, family gatherings, dancing, and Irish and Scottish music. He shared a special bond with the late Cora and Tom Nolan of Glace Bay who brought David up as their own son due to an extended illness. His nieces and nephews were a large part of his life as well. Our house was always filled with friends and family. Dad's life revolved around showing the grandchildren the right way to climb a tree or a ladder, to build things, to fish, enjoy nature and sports. Dad loved children and even in his late 80s would get down on the floor to play with his great-grandchildren. Dad was always there for us, moving us from one city to another, from one province to another; he enjoyed taking drives to Moncton and Halifax to visit with his children, their spouses and families. He was ready with his tools to make any repairs or maintenance on our vehicles or homes. Our biggest concern was keeping dad from hurting himself from falling off ladders or the roof. He enjoyed gardening, cutting down trees, cleaning the yard, fixing his home and vehicle and collecting anything that could be reused. He taught us all the values of life, through his example and faith in God. Also, that you need a good sense of humour, and be able to laugh at yourself rather than someone else. He was a very loving father and taught us a lot of life lessons that we all live by today. He was our best friend, our protector and teacher. He is survived by his wife of five years, Florence (McNutt); son, David (Cindi), Lower Sackville; daughters, Ronita (Colleen), Dartmouth, Heather Noel (Donat), Leah (Victor) LeBlanc and Maria (Phil) Tomlinson, all of Moncton; grandchildren, Chris, Robbie, Chad, Charlie, Tom, Matthew, Melanie, Kevin, Andrew, Stephen and Keith; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Abigail, Ava, Trent, Arianna and Cohen; sisters-in-law, Mary MacAdam, Lillian, Grace, Frances, Hazel and brother-in-law, Alden and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Demetrice 'Sis' (Nolan) MacAdam; sisters, Mary Agnes MacAdam and Isabel MacPherson; brothers, Ronald James, Jimmy, Johnny, Archie, Danny and two siblings at birth. We want to thank all of the staff at Melville Lodge in Herring Cove who showed such great compassion and love for dad during his stay at the Lodge. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice. Visitation will be held Wednesdsay, March 16, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Atlantic Funeral Home in Lower Sackville. Born in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton Island, N.S., on April 12, 1920, dad was the third of 11 children of Michael Anthony Musial and Bertha Louise (Boutilier). He grew up in River Ryan, where his parents owned and operated the New Waterford-Glace Bay Bus Company before and during the Second World War. Dad attended school in River Ryan. From 1943-1945, he served in the Canadian Army as military policeman stationed in Montreal, Halifax and Sydney. Later, he worked for over 20 years in No. 12 Colliery, New Waterford. He retired early due to complications from injuries suffered underground. Dad's role as activist and environmentalist predated the establishment of the Nova Scotia Department of Environment. He was a member of the New Waterford and Area Fish and Game Association (NWAFGA) throughout the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, and following retirement, he was free to embrace the causes dearest to his heart, the promotion and preservation of the natural environment. Into his 80th decade, dad continued to volunteer in his own community of Gardiner Mines and in the adjoining communities of River Ryan, Lingan and New Waterford. He served as president, Gardiner Mines Senior Citizens and Pensioners, and as a founding member and spokesman for the Sydney Harbour Fortifications Society, playing a pivotal role in the restoration of Fort Petrie. As well, he became a member of the New Waterford Tourism Association. In 2000, the NWAFGA nominated dad for the Anne Holland Award in recognition of outstanding community volunteerism and awarded him a lifetime membership in the association. The members of the Department of Natural Resources presented dad with the Sportsman of the Year Award. He was also nominated for the Order of Nova Scotia. Cape Breton Deaths March 05, 2011 Saturday There are 7 obituaries published for today. Marie MacLellan June Keefe Mary 'Marilyn' Cameron Sarah Young Rebecca Young Malcolm 'Peter' Macquarrie Martha R. Gillespie ******************************************************************************************************* Marie MacLellan Born in: Christmas Island, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 04/03/2011 With great sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Marie MacLellan of Sydney and Christmas Island. Only days short of her 91st birthday, Marie passed away peacefully on March 4, 2011 with loving family by her side. Words cannot express how much she will be missed. Born in Christmas Island in 1920, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Neil and Sarah Agatha (Bryden) MacKenzie. A Registered Nurse from the Class of "44" at St. Joseph's Hospital in Glace Bay, she loved nursing and enjoyed her years on the second floor of St. Rita's Hospital. Working shift work while raising her 12 children, she was known for her kindness, caring, compassion and of course, patience. With retirement, Marie was able to spend time between her homestead in Christmas Island and travelling to visit her many children and grandchildren. Christmas Island nourished her love of nature and was home to her treasured Bras d'Or Lakes - she enjoyed the therapeutic effects of plunging head first into it's cold waters and relaxing with family and friends on the beach. Marie's life has always been guided by her strong Catholic faith, fervent prayer and a belief in the inherent goodness in all people. Her spirituality was instrumental in her dealing courageously with a massive stroke in October 2008. Her faith, humour, and determination have been nothing short of inspirational. Marie's courage, sensitivity and personal strength gave her the ability to handle life's challenges. Marie was a beautiful person - a loving mother, devoted grandmother and beloved friend. She is survived by her brother, Joseph (Lillian) Sydney, sister's-in-law Jean MacKenzie and Margaret MacLellan and daughters Freda, Sharon, Doreen all in Vancouver, Patricia (Nick) Brampton, Mildred, Christmas Island, Lucina (Mike), Halifax, and Delores (George), Sudbury - and sons, Terrence, Maple Ridge, Anthony, Marble Mountain, Duncan John (DJ) Sydney, and Michael (Sheryl), Calgary, along with many loving grandchildren. Born in New Waterford, N.S. on June 17, 1921, June was the daughter of the late Allan and Mary Agnes Graham (Gracie) and was predeceased by her husband, Neil Lauchlin 'Lauchie' Keefe. She is survived by daughter, Gerri Brown (Buster), Halifax; sons, Roy (Linda), Bridgewater, Allan (Jan), Vancouver, B.C., David (Connie), Bedford, and Ronald, Calgary, Alta; granddaughters, Jessica, Emily (Zach); grandsons, Jeff, John, Jordan, Jeremy and great-grandson, Colin. She is also survived by her brother, Bernard, British Columbia and her sisters, Dollie Simms, Emma Gillis, both of New Waterford and Noreen (Jack) Patriquin, Moncton, N.B. and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, June was predeceased by brothers, Richard, Bobby, Billy, Charles, Doug, Buddy and sisters, Mayme Dielgtens and Gertrude Graham. As our mom, she was a stay at home wife and mother for most of her life, and was adored by her family. She was our family's foundation and loved being around young people and traveled the country to be with them. Over the years, mom opened her home to so many people and treated them all like her very own. One of her passions was to watch sports and to attend the games of her children and grandchildren. Many will remember that mom became an expert in the rules of Box Lacrosse in the 70s and willingly shared her knowledge with any referee that didn't see it her way. Those that knew her, knew that she was always going to the game and that she would make room if they needed a ride. She loved to garden and loved pets, especially Putter, her beloved companion dog. She enjoyed knitting and quilting and was a whiz at puzzles, card playing, and bowled in a league into her eighties. Strong and assured in her opinions, and feisty with wit when she had to be, she was always there with the right advice. We wish to thank the staff at Drummond Hall for the excellent care she received during her final days. Cremation will take place through arrangements with J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax, where visitation will take place 2-5 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 2011, with memorial service in the chapel at 1 p.m. Monday, March 7. Family flowers only. Dr. Garson Lecker Lawrence Leslie Hanna Christie Faye Hope Paige Alfred 'Alfie' Scott James Earl Robertson Alexander O'Neil Daniel Penny ******************************************************************************************************* Dr. Garson Lecker Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Dr. Garson Lecker of Sydney on Tuesday, March 1, 2011. He lived a rich and full life. He would have turned 90 on the last day of this month. Garson was a "Come From Away" who grew to know and love the island. Raised in Winnipeg, he enlisted during the Second World War and completed officers' training in Kingston, Ont. Following a motorcycle accident, he was stationed in Halifax and Sydney with the Royal Canadian Signal Corps and served as a Lieutenant. Sydney is where he met the love of his life and wife of 65 years, Edith (Wolfson) Lecker. Garson practiced optometry for 55 years. Vision care took him all over Cape Breton Island. Old timers will remember Garson for taking travelling clinics to Cheticamp, Dingwall, Arichat, St. Peter's and Port Hawkesbury in the 1940s through '80s. He served as president of the Nova Scotia and the Canadian Optometric Associations. He was proud to be the 47th member of the American Association of Optometrists. He loved his profession and was thrilled to take part in a mission to China with other experts, in 1986. Garson was also devoted to the Temple Sons of Israel Congregation. He served as president and vice-president for many years. He unlocked the doors and turned on the lights for his community until a year ago, when poor health prevented him from attending weekly services. He was a member of the congregation's choir for 55 years. Singing brought him great pleasure. Art also filled his life. Garson studied painting with Marie Moore for 37 years. His Wednesday lessons took him into another community, where he flourished as an artist. Together, Garson and Edith raised three daughters, Michele (Moishe Gryfe) of Toronto, Sheri (Mark Evans) of Stillwater Lake and Debra, who predeceased him in 1971. Garson was the very best Zaida to his grandchildren, Daniel (Dena) and Bessie, Joey and Sam and his great-grandchildren, Koby and Rikki. They were a tremendous source of pride and love. He delighted in all their accomplishments. Garson is survived by many nieces and nephews. He adored his sister-in-law, Shirley Chernin. Willena Attwood of Vancouver was like another daughter. Harrietha Margaret 'Margie' MacPherson Joan Jackson Clarence Scott Darroch ******************************************************************************************************* Edith (Chandler) Mullan Born in: Bethnal Green, England, United Kingdom Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 25/02/2011 Edith Olive Winifred (Chandler) Mullan, aged 89, of Sydney, N.S., died at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Friday, Feb. 25, 2011. Edith was born July 29, 1921, in Bethnal Green, London, England, the first of three daughters born to Edith Webb and George Chandler. From Bethnal Green, the family moved to Kingsbury in West London and then to Leeds where she attended high school and was confirmed by the bishop of Ripon in the Church of England. She was encouraged to attend university, but that did not eventuate; her love of reading and an editor's view of written language would stay with her for life. She joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service, working for the Army in May 1942, and rose to the rank of sergeant. On Feb. 12 1944, she married, in Leeds, David John Mullan, born in Co Armagh, Ulster, on May 10, 1906, who was then company sergeant-major in the British Army. David died July 6, 1989, in Calgary, in the 46th year of their married life. In 1954, the family moved from England to Alberta. David came first, in April, and prepared for the family to arrive in Edmonton. Edith and the three children sailed into Halifax harbour aboard the Georgic and passed through Pier 21 on June 24. From there she managed her family onto the train to Montreal, and then across the country to her new home. The family lived in Edmonton, then in Clover Bar (now absorbed by Edmonton) in Wetaskiwin, where she worked in the public library, then, in the summer 1958, to Calgary where she lived until her removal to Cape Breton Island. She held various jobs in Calgary, finally working in an editorial capacity for Burroughs and Co., publishers of the Western Weekly Reports. In the decade until April 2005 she spent her winters in California. She is survived by her three children, Margaret Payne (Bill), Napa, Calif., Jennifer Mullan, Ottawa, and David Mullan (Arlene), Sydney, N.S., with whom Edith had lived since July 2005. She leaves two grandchildren, Corinne (Tim), Calgary, and Joel (Deborah), Victoria; and two great-grandchildren, Logan Chandler Mullen and Ainsley Emma Mullan, both of Calgary. Her sisters also survive her, Joan (Don, deceased) Potter, Hertfordshire, and Audrey ('Bobba', married to Eric) Lambeth, North Yorkshire. Over her long life she was never without a strong attachment to the church and at the time of her death was an adherent of St. Anthony Daniel Roman Catholic Church. Visitation will take place Thursday, March 3 at Fosters Garden Chapel, Calgary, Alta., from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Fosters Garden Chapel. Burial in Queen's Park Cemetery, Calgary.
