Born in Seaview, Nova Scotia; she was the youngest child of the late John William and Catherine Belle Goswell. Growing up, she tended the family farm with her siblings. Later, she would be employed as a housekeeper, both in Nova Scotia and in Ontario. Upon returning to Nova Scotia, she worked for War Time Housing in Halifax as a server. It was there that she met Kenny MacLean, an employee of Standard Paving. They quickly became the love of each others lives and were married in November, 1945 and within a few years Eva had given birth to their only child Bernadette. Eva and Kenny began boarding students for the Nova Scotia Community College; a practice Eva continued for many years after her husband's death, in 1968, until she had moved to East Bay, in 1979, to be with her family. Those who knew Eva would agree that she was a simple woman with a wonderful, warm smile. She had strong values and was a devout Christian. Never, until her final years, would she ever miss Saturday evening mass... and for those occasions she did... she insisted on being present for Sunday morning's. She believed in working hard and living a good healthy life. Many in the community may recall seeing her walk "little Pudgy" each day to check the mailbox or walk the local track. She also enjoyed participating in many community social functions where she could normally be found where there was tea to be served or a dirty dish to be washed. As young children, her grandchildren and grandnieces would characterize her as stern in her mannerisms; however, all agreed that as with a fine wine, she mellowed with age. Her stern mannerisms gave way to a delightfully sharp sense of humour which made itself known on many occasions, leaving everyone in stitches as a result of her dry wit and surprising commentary. Eva was an avid crocheter and knitter and everyone in the family looked forward to her Christmas socks, mittens and dish clothes. She especially looked forward to Sundays and on those special occasions where the family would gather at her niece's, Baba, with whom she shared a special bond, for good meals and the sharing of family memories. Her speciality gravy will be missed by all. She is survived by her daughter, Bernadette (Henry) Martell; grandchildren, Ken (Kimberley), Giselle (Joe) Troke, and Michelle; and great grandchildren, William Troke and James Troke, and her "little boy" Pudgy the dog. She was predeceased by her husband Kenny MacLean; sisters Ida Hayman, Emma Bonang, Carey Hoffman, Henrietta, and Annie Burns; her brothers James and Calder and her step siblings William Grant, John Grant and Elizabeth MacMillan. Visitation for the late Mrs. MacLean will be Sunday, April 24, 2011 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 25 at 2:00 pm in St. Mary's Church, East Bay with Rev. Frank Abbass officiating with interment at a later date. On behalf of Eva, the family would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to her private caregiver (Lynda) and professional caregivers County Home Makers and VON and Palliative Care attendants. She enjoyed their compassion and company immensely. In liew of flowers donations can be made to St. Mary's Church Fund, East Bay, NS; C.B. Palliative Care or any charity of your choice. Born in Ingonish, Traynor was the son of the late Florence Beatrice Doyle and Thomas James Donovan. Traynor's mother passed away when he was only five years of age. Traynor and his siblings were then cared for by his grandparents, Joseph Doyle and Margaret (Young) Doyle who he was very close to. Later to prevent the children from going to foster homes, Traynor's half brother, Duncan Donovan and Traynor's aunt, Frances Cooke, who lived in Sydney, where Duncan was a fulltime employee of the Sydney Steel Plant, moved back to Ingonish to raise the children and keep the family unit together. Traynor became particularly close to his half brother and aunt, Frances. Left to mourn are his sons, Traynor (Valerie), Oromocto, Donnie (Janice), Glace Bay; daughters, Anne (Simon), Glace Bay, Mary (Clifford) Desveaux, Glace Bay. Also surviving are his treasured grandchildren, Kyle, Connor, Emily, Evan, Robbie, Brandon, Patrick, T.J., Brian and Wayne; great-grandchildren, Kaitlin, T.J., Owen, Charlotte and Tyson; and many nieces and nephews. Traynor was predeceased by the love of his life, wife, Anne (Keylor), who he adored, and a son, Thomas. Traynor was also predeceased by brothers, Earl, Isadore and sisters, Irene and Theresa. Traynor left Ingonish at the age of 14. He arrived in Sydney working odd jobs. As he grew older, he worked as a crane operator at the Sydney Steel Plant. In the mid 1950s, he became manager of Scotts Hardware in Ashby where he met his longtime best friend, Joe Waye. Together they started the country and western band, the T.R. Ranch Boys that ruled the radio and TV airways for 10 years in the 1950s & 60s. Traynor was hired by CJCB TV in 1966 which later became ATV & CTV until he retired after 25 years of service in 1991. One of Traynor's biggest thrills was meeting and becoming friends for over 40 years with his boyhood music idol, Hank Snow. Traynor was often referred to as Cape Breton's own version of Hank Snow and was widely known as a pioneer in music in Cape Breton. In 1996 the T.R. Ranch Boys won an ECMA for pioneers in country music. However, the most important part of Traynor's life was that of a family man. He always put family first, especially his beloved wife of 53 years, Anne, who he adored. Traynor was a man of deep faith and although he loved and lived life to the fullest his strongest love was to be one day be reunited with his beloved wife, Anne. He will be sadly missed by family and friends and as Traynor would always quote a Hank Snow song, "I'm movin on". Visitation for Traynor Donovan will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, 5-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Helen was the last surviving offspring of Edward and Winifred Troke of Little Lorraine. She was predeceased by husband, Mike and daughter, Leona (MacDonald). She is survived by nine children, Ron and Mike, Sydney, Constance Hope, New York, Sheila, Margaret and Theresa, Toronto, Mary McCloskey, Vermont, Joyce Avent, Minnesota, and Tom, Newfoundland and Labrador. She also leaves 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Helen arrived prematurely Aug. 1, 1915. Her incubator was fashioned from a shoe box placed on a warm oven door by a prayerful country doctor. Childhood was shared with seven siblings in a hard scrabble fishing village where an ingrained work ethic and a zest for life predominated. Brothers Jack and Tom Troke taught her to dance at the local parish hall and to enjoy their hard-earned bounty at the Main-a-dieu lobster suppers - two of her lifelong pleasures. She prevailed through 50 plus years of marriage, and motherhood of her large family despite limited resources. She baked from scratch, sewed her children's clothing without patterns and coaxed robust gardens from ungenerous soil. Helen was a dynamo who danced to Lefty Frizzle, sang along with the Clancy Brothers, patronized the Holy Redeemer bingo games and joyfully chanced two dollar wagers at the Sydney race track. She regaled her family with stories of her early years. In mid life, she enjoyed a twenty five-year career at Zellers and forged many lasting friendships. She relished vacation trips to visit her now far flung offspring. Their return visits to her home were met with marathon baking sprees. Abetted by her daughter, she now embraced the role of fashionista. From her deck, built by her son Tom, she savored her books, tea and much loved garden. In her retirement years she explored Cape Breton's restaurants with her side-kick Carol. She followed sports with son Ron, cheering from Tom Henke and Al MacInnis, but her heart belonged to Gordie Howe. She delighted us in her final years with her quick wit and sassy observations. Her favourite songs were now sung (on request) by son Mike. Her surviving children remain grateful for the gifts she imparted; a passion for reading and learning, top notch seamstress skills, a tiller's touch, a solid work ethic and especially a family folk lore second to none. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Online condolences may be made at twcurry.com. ********************************* Kathy 'Kate' (MacKenzie) MacDonald Born In: New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Sault Ste. The Associated Press Auburn University student Ryan Jordan gets a laugh from his girl friend Haden Little as he tries on a Hanshin Tigers "gi" that he found in the clothing aisles at Unclaimed Baggage Center in Scottsboro, Ala. (Photo) Along a country road next to a muffler shop and a cemetery is a 3,700-square-metre store filled with all the items that never made it home from vacation. Shoes, samurai swords, iPods, even lingerie, all available for 20 to 80 per cent off. When airlines can't determine who owns a bag, they sell it for a few bucks to the Unclaimed Baggage Center, a warehouse sized facility that would put your local PTA garage sale to shame. Past an entranceway of world clocks and columns decorated with foreign currency, one traveller's misfortune turns into a bargain-hunter's paradise. " You never know what you may find," says Clayton Grider, a Scottsboro youth minister who often starts his day at the store. "It is a sport." More than two million of the roughly 700 million suitcases checked on U.S. airlines last year Plenty of belongings are left in didn't arrive with their owners. seat back pockets. And it's not just luggage. including moose antlers, a parachute, a medieval suit of armour, even a shrunken head. Just don't come here expecting to find your lost all-white juries. How did it become the end of the line for lost suitcases? Unclaimed Baggage was started in 1970 by Doyle Owens, a part-time insurance salesman in Scottsboro who had a friend working at a bus line in Washington. One day the friend asked if he wanted to buy lost luggage from buses. Four years later airline luggage was added. Since then, the store has expanded to car rental companies, commuter trains and is eyeing cruises. The airlines don't like to discuss how their customers' belongings end up here. American, Delta and United refused interviews. US Airways, JetBlue and AirTran acknowledged they sell items in bulk - sight unseen - to the store but wouldn't say how much they are paid, citing confidentiality clauses in their contracts. " It's not something that we make money off," says Bill Race, who oversees luggage for JetBlue. "It's probably less than what you paid for lunch." New York's Metro-North Railroad is paid $25 for each suitcase-size box of lost property. Bigticket goods such as electronics or jewelry are sold for 30 per cent of their value. Last year, Unclaimed Baggage paid MetroNorth about $38,000 for about 5,000 items. Other airlines - Alaska, Frontier, Hawaiian, Southwest, Spirit and Virgin America - donate luggage to charities such as the Salvation Army. Worldwide, almost 2.5 billion bags are checked each year, and 850,000 are never seen again by their owner, says Nick Gates, who oversees baggage products for SITA, an aviation technology provider. In the U.S., those passengers are paid up to $3,300 by the airlines. Most claims are smaller. Airlines don't consider how much it costs to replace a passenger's wares, but how much they'd be worth used. Airlines vary in their records for losing bags. Southwest says one of every 67,000 bags checked is never reunited with its owner. Delta loses bags 13 times as often. Since the introduction of baggage fees, they're all doing better. The rate at which bags are delayed or mishandled is now half what it was in 2007. Experts say the fees - airlines collect more than $3.3 billion a year - deter passengers from checking bags, easing strains on the system. Still, some suitcases remain a mystery. The bags lack identification tags, which can be ripped off during conveyor belt jams. Airlines inventory the luggage and use a database to match the contents with owners' descriptions. Investigators also look for other clues. " They don surgical gloves and then do an autopsy of the bags," says Jan Fogelberg, Frontier's vice-president of customer experience. Sometimes, it's as simple as a name on a prescription bottle. Other times, they track owners through store receipts left in pockets. JetBlue once reunited two newlyweds with their bag after finding a photo inside of their wedding cake. The couple's first names were inscribed on the icing. In the background were palm trees and a pool. The airline guessed the couple had a destination wedding in Florida and matched the names on the cake with flight manifests. Bags that reach the Alabama store are opened and the contents are prepared for sale. Laptop and iPod memories are wiped clean and 40,000 pieces of clothing are laundered each month. Then the wet suits, rifles, coats, diamond earring and dresses are put out for shoppers. While the store might be an addiction for some bargainhunters, others come just for the kitsch factor. After rummaging through the shelves, Auburn University students Ryan Little and Jordan Haden walked out with a Will Smith CD, a Destiny's Child greatest-hits album and a Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen hair dryer. The total cost: $13.76. "It's a last chance," Little says, " for somebody to make a profit off impulse buys and bad Christmas presents."

Claire was born in Bois, Gagnon, N.B., of parents Joseph Romeo 'Omer' Duguay, Bois Gagnon, originally Shippagan and Marguerite Thibodeau, Bois Gagnon, originally Neguac, Burnt Church, N.B. Claire is survived by sons, Clifford, Pictou, Hector Jr. (Claire), Sydney River; daughter, Blanche (Dino) Sophocleous, Ben Eoin; and sisters, Eva and Georgina, New Brunswick. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Hector, a son in infancy, sisters, Demerise, Maria, Suzanne, Laura, brothers, Elzear, Jean Baptiste, Joe, Pierre and daughter-in-law, Joan. In a family of nine siblings, she completed Grade 10 at regular school and at the age of 16, in 1937, went to work in Montreal taking care of little children at first, then seamstress working for Franz Blau, a Jewish friend and renowned owner of a textile plant in Montreal. Eventually Mom worked at the CIL plant making munitions for the efforts of the Allies engaged in the Second World War. Once the war was over she returned to her old home in Bois Gagnon. At that time she met the love of her life and future husband, Joseph Hector Morais, whose family was well known to Claire's folks and parishioners of the same St. Isidore Catholic Church. Shortly afterwards they took the train bound for Cape Breton and moved to the Gaelic speaking village of Drummondville, Loch Lomond, where Hector worked for his uncle at first, then bought out his uncle's sawmill, horses and logging equipment upon his uncle's return to New Brunswick. Claire worked in the logging camp providing homemade food, lodging and laundry services to a bunkhouse full of top-notch loggers - mostly brothers, in-laws, relatives or friends from back home. Claire preserved hundreds of mason jars full of wild game like deer, rabbit, pheasant, duck and pork etc, in preparation for the long winters ahead. In June 1947, the first child, Clifford was born in Loch Lomond, the first Frenchman in Gaelic speaking lands. Since there were no other children around, he became the novelty of the village which prompted the locals to visit and befriend the Morais family and a good excuse to prove their welcome for the newlyweds into a much different culture. Blanche was the first girl into the family in '52 which provided great comfort in the present and future years and especially after Dad died when Claire moved into Blanche and her husband's home in Ben Eoin, Cape Breton. A new house was hand built in Big Pond by the locals and relatives in '53 while they lived in a little cabin, Michael and Kay MacInnis of Big Pond Centre had so graciously provided for free, as they assimilated into now a mostly English speaking village. Another bouncing baby boy, Hector Junior came along in 1959, the baby of the family. Claire's creative spirit, artifacts, Cape Breton Tartan pleated shirts and skirts, McPuffins, handcrafts, Christmas stockings and so forth, plus her 48 rabbit pies every Christmas, were joyous creations for everyone to see or have in their homes. The short-lived basement bingos during the time of the building of the original fire hall, evolved into the Sunday ritual of flea-marketeering where Dad's bicycles and Mom's crafts and recycled clothing took off into a cottage business where new social alliances were made. She moved in with her daughter for several years until she made her last move into the Harbourstone Enhanced Care Nursing Home in Sydney River in 2005, until her sudden death. They were her extended family Š. her angles. A celebration of Claire's life will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011, at St. Mary's Parish Church in Big Pond. There will be a meet and greet at 1 p.m. followed by her funeral mass at 2 p.m. with Rev. Joe Gillis officiating. Interment/committal is weather permitting. A fellowship/comradeship following at the local volunteer fire department hall in Big Pond. Everyone is welcome. No flowers necessary. If so desired, donations can be made to the Big Pond fire department or help someone or a neighbour in need. Online condolences to www.twcurry.com. Mom loved the simple things in life. Spending time with her family, enjoying the many hours spent in hockey rinks, gyms, soccer, baseball and football fields being a proud Nana and cheering on Bruce, Dena and their teams. Mom loved visitors, she entertained many friends over the years and we can honestly say no one ever left her home hungry. Mom was an amazing cook. Summers were her favourite time. She was happiest on days spent on the family property atNorthside East Bay on the Bras d'Or Lakes where everyone was always welcome. She loved travelling the Bras d'Or Lakes by boat with her family and everyday commented just how beautiful the scenery was. In the winter, Mom loved snowmobiling on trails all over Cape Breton, she thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors. Mom had a genuine love of animals especially their Samoyed, Nanook. Mom was a person who put everyone else before herself. She was very kind and generous and more than willing to lend a helping hand or words of encouragement. Mom always managed a positive approach.
