She is now reunited with Dad 'Ted' and my brother Leo. Born in North Sydney, Eva was the daughter of the late Richard and Debia (Kasouf) Rahey. She was a member of St. Joseph Church in North Sydney and recently St. Anthony Daniel Church in Sydney. First and foremost, Mom valued her family and her Lebanese culture. Her strength, intelligence and generosity were only equaled by her warmth, kindness and passion for living. She was an extremely independent woman. She was a tower of strength to me. She become a widow at the young age of 42 and 10 years later her son passed away at the age of 18 years. From that day forward, Mom and I continued our life's journey together and enjoyed travelling (especially to Las Vegas each year). Family and friends were visited, near and far, in Michigan, California, Egypt, Lebanon, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Mom was a nurturing and loving person. Following the death of her mother (Debia Rahey), she became the "unofficial" matriarch of her family. Her door was always open - her hospitality unequalled. For Mom, one of her great pleasures was cooking and serving a 4-5 course Lebanese meal followed by socializing with her guests. She was an excellent communicator who was comfortable interacting with people from all walks of life. Mom followed in the footsteps of her family (three generations of entrepreneurs). She and Dad owned and managed "The People's Dairy" (your present day convenience store) in the business section of North Sydney. After my Dad's death, she worked for several years with her brother Raymond in his General Store in Sydney Mines. Her love for cooking lead her to setting up a home-based business (Eva's Lebanese Kitchen). She made and sold Lebanese food and her customers were from various parts of Cape Breton, mainland Nova Scotia and also Newfoundland. She was a proud entrepreneur who worked hard to provide a quality product that people never forgot. In recent years, I would tease Mom saying that she could have been another "Peninsular Farm" if she had patented her yogurt made from scratch. Her response was "I just wasn't meant to be rich" and then she would laugh. Mom was especially proud that she was asked by the town of North Sydney to cater (1,200 people) for its centennial celebration. Mom was also active in her community. She was a tireless and dedicated volunteer. For many years she was a member of St. Elizabeth Hospital (presently Northside General) Ladies Auxiliary. She volunteered in the hospital canteen and in coordinating fundraising events, such as, Lebanese suppers and dances. Her involvement in the local auxiliary lead to her being appointed Zone Chairman for Cape Breton. Mom was a people-person and in this position she enjoyed travelling to various parts of Nova Scotia and meeting people. Eva is survived by her loving daughter, Marcellina 'Marcie' Shwery-Stanley, Sydney, and her two brothers, James R. (Jamal) Rahey, North Sydney, and Carl (Linda) Rahey, Toronto. She will be dearly missed by her many nieces and nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Theodore 'Ted' and son, Leo Shwery and by her brothers, Raymond, Arthur 'Iser', Nicholas 'Olie' and sisters, Isabel and Marie. Words cannot express the appreciation those who helped call and comfort my mother as illness overcame her in recent years. The fact that her dignity and many aspects of her daily routine were maintained until almost the very end will always be a comfort to me. I would like to thank the many people who helped Mom over the years, especially during her time of illness. Special appreciation is extended to her private caregivers ,"Her Girls", as Mom called them. They were an extended family to me. Also thanks to City Homemakers and the VON. Visitation for Eva will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Patrick O'Neill officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton. Following the funeral a reception and celebration of her life will be held at the North Star Inn on Forrest Street, North Sydney. Online condolences may be sent to www.wjdooley.com. A memorial mass for Eva will be held at a later date. ********************************** Sarah Isabelle MacLean Born In: North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 11/07/2011 It is with heavy hearts that we the family announce the passing of Sarah MacLean on Monday, July 11, 201, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family. While vacationing on his beloved Cape Breton Island, Michael Tyler Rose took God's hand and went to heaven; a passenger in a tragic car accident in his hometown. Our hearts are broken but our faith remains strong. Tyler's life was short but did he shine. He faced life with an irrepressible smile and infectious personality. If you knew Tyler, you either liked him - a lot - or you loved him; there were no other options. Tyler was that way. Tyler left home after graduating from Breton Education Centre in 2002 where he was one of the best power forwards to ever pick up a basketball. He joined his family, Wayne, Linda and Christopher in Rocky Mountain House, Alta., where he excelled as a pipefitter and boilermaker. Tyler treasured his mother's cooking, his father's adventuresome spirit and his big brother's guidance. He cherished his dogs and cats, was an avid weightlifter, the undisputed heavyweight champ of Rocky Mountain House, listened to Pink Floyd, loved to eat nippy chicken and proudly displayed his family name and East Coast heritage tattooed on his body. A true son of Cape Breton. If we measure a man by his love of the people in his life, Tyler was a giant. His greatest personal treasures were his family and friends. His imposing physical stature never gave hint to the softness of his heart or the beauty in his soul - "luv ya" were his parting words whenever he left family or home; even for a minute. His friends are cherished members of Tyler's extended family. His love for them was unconditional. Tyler was a coal miner's son and grandson, born in New Waterford, Nov. 26, 1983. He is survived by his loving parents Wayne and Linda (Drake) Rose, his big brother, and best friend, Christopher, grandfather Steve Drake, uncle Steve Drake (Barb), aunt Sherry Drake (Graham), uncle Patrick Drake (Jan) and cousin Julianna, uncle Wesley (Deanie) Rose and cousins Wesley Jerad, Jeremy and Alexandria, aunt Heather (Billy) MacNeil and cousins Kristen and Melissa. He was predeceased by grandparents Kaye Drake, Wesley and Winifred Rose and cousin Wesley Rose. Tyler's life was a beautiful adventure from the time he learned to swim and camp with his family on Cape Breton's shores to his last day on earth taking in a beautiful Island sunrise in his hometown of New Waterford. He was the perfect example of taking the boy out of Cape Breton but never, ever being able to take Cape Breton out of the boy. Being on the Cape was always number one on his bucket list. He sleeps peacefully exactly where he always wanted to be - home. Luv ya. Miss ya. Shine on. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 13, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Tyler will be taken to Calvin United Church, Hudson Street, New Waterford, at noon on Thursday, July 14 where a celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Afterwards all are welcome to join Tyler's family and friends at the Calvin Hall on Smith Street for hugs, tears, smiles and stories about God's newest angel. Online condolences may be expressed at www.vjmcgillivray.ca. Interment will be in St. Agnes cemetery at a later date. Tyler was an organ donator. ****************************************************************************************************** Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CBGHA http://www.cbgen.org

Born May 1, 1922, Arthur was the natural son of the late Sidney and Maud (MacDonald) MacDonald of Mira. Following the accidental drowning of his father in the Mira River, Arthur was accepted on the day of his third birthday, clutching a fistful of mayflowers, to be raised with love, as the son of the late Angus J. and Mary (MacLeod) Smith of Dominion and Glace Bay. In his early years Arthur was well known in local music circles as the possessor of a beautiful and gifted voice. During his school years he studied music locally. Following graduation from Glace Bay High School he went on to study music at the Conservatory of Music in Halifax. These were the war years. His studies were interrupted while he made his contribution to the war effort, 1942 to 1945, by serving with the RCAF. He was trained as an aero-engine mechanic, but spent his service engaged in flight operations in the Maritimes and Newfoundland. Once engaged on active service, Arthur's singing talents became recognized and in demand by the RCAF concert series, singing for the army, navy and airforce. Should the concert be held prior to the embarkation of servicemen to the theatres of war, Art would be booked to sing the closing number of the program. These would be large and very noisy assemblies, but the hall would become so still one could hear a pin drop, while Arthur sang his rendition of "The Lord's Prayer." A very fitting send-off, an officer was heard to observe. Following disengagement from service, Arthur continued his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. On returning to Glace Bay, for some years he taught aspiring young local singers the rudiments of classical voice production. Music continued to be the focal point throughout his life and he shared this love with his family. In 1949, he joined the telegraphy staff of the Sydney and Louisbourg Railway. Assuming the position of station agent of the Glace Bay Railway Station in 1962, he served until retirement in May 1987, under both the S&L & later Devco management, as Glace Bay's last railway station agent. He very much enjoyed both his RCAF and his railway associations and experiences and treasured his memories and the friendships made throughout his lifetime. Active in community affairs, Arthur was a past president of Morrison High School Home and School Association and of Glace Bay Rotary Club. As Rotary president, he was chair of the International Assembly and conference of Rotarians held at Keltic Lodge in June 1975. He served as co-chair with Ian MacNeil of the Sydney Rotary Club, of the very lively and successful musical production of "The King and I" at the historic reopening of the newly refurbished Savoy Theatre on May 17, 1976. For many years he served on the board of directors and on multiple committees, of the Glace Bay General Hospital and on the board of directors of the Savoy Theatre. In line with his singing talents, Arthur enjoyed his public speaking engagements. He had a natural love of language, of elocution, of the rhythmic flow of words and poetry. Because of this interest, he was often invited as speaker for special events as Remembrance Day services; at retirement dinners, for the historical society etc. As his family grew, Art re-discovered his great love for Mira. He deeply enjoyed his summers at the 'Bungalow' on Mira Bay, spent with his children; he enjoyed the sleepovers of the grandchildren and in these past few years, he enjoyed quiet drives to Mira and his tea breaks in the sunporch. He treasured the succession of animals that shared our lives; those gorgeous springer spaniels; the majestic Dobermans and those two stray cats Waffles and Abbey, he was so pleased to have rescued. Arthur is survived by his wife, the former Gladys M. Phillips, Glace Bay; daughters, Sheila Marie (David) Latham, Toronto, Sylvia Jean Smith, Glace Bay, Mora Diane Smith (Jerry Murphy), Glace Bay; and his son, Angus J. Smith (Kim Cudhea), Coldbrook, N.S. He has five grandchildren, Sarah Jean (Ryan) Murphy-Boutilier; Kendall James Murphy and Catherine Ellen Murphy, Glace Bay; Gilbert Taylor Smith (Rachel Liem) and Emily Margaret Smith, Halifax; he has one great-grandchild, newborn Zachary Ryan Boutilier, Glace Bay. Arthur is survived by his sisters, Kathlyn Peach, Port Morien, Georgina Milley, Sydney/P.E.I.; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by the best friend of his youth, Earl H. Davidson, Middleton, N.S. He was predeceased by his sisters, Margaret Campbell, Mary Cann, Alice MacQueen, brothers, Allison MacMillan, John and Allister MacDonald. Arthur was a member of Knox United Church. Honouring his request, under the care of Patten Funeral Home, arrangements are being made for a private family memorial service with interment in Mira Bay Cemetery when arrangements are complete. Memorials to the Alzheimer's Society, palliative care or a charity of choice would be appreciated and most welcome. Online condolences can be made to the family at www.pattenfuneral.com.
