    1. [Cape Breton Co NS] Carleton researchers launch Canadian genealogy survey in Cape Breton
    2. Carol MacLean
    3. Cape Breton Post July 27, 2011 Wednesday Carleton researchers launch Canadian genealogy survey in Cape Breton Ken MacLeod Cape Breton Post SYDNEY - Two Carleton University researchers have launched an online survey that seeks to understand the surge of interest in genealogy. Topics : Carleton University , Sprott School of Business , Highland Village Museum , Cape Breton , Nova Scotia , Ottawa The first stage of this national project is being piloted in Nova Scotia, starting in Cape Breton before moving on to the mainland. Genealogy is one of the fastest-growing leisure activities, with current estimates suggesting that between 20 per cent and 25 per cent of Canadians actively pursue family history projects. Del Muise, an emeritus professor of history at Carleton University in Ottawa, said the Canadian Genealogical Survey will "gauge the nature of the phenomenon." "With estimates of some 25,000,000 people in North America being able to trace their families back to Nova Scotia during the past 400 years, Nova Scotia seemed like the best place to start our data collection," said Muise, who is a New Waterford native and East Margaree resident. Muise is joined in the study by Leighann Neilson, associate professor of marketing at Carleton University's Sprott School of Business and a family historian herself. "The survey will likely have implications for the many museums, archives and local libraries that have seen an influx of visitors seeking information on their family's history," she said. "We hope to gather information on who's doing family history today and what resources they like to use. A key feature of our research will be to assess the inter-relationships between web-based research and on-site research." According to Muise, Cape Bretoners are active in tracing their roots through online social networking sites like Facebook, as well as through local institutions such as the Highland Village Museum and the Beaton Institute at Cape Breton University. "Cape Breton is a very highly developed area for genealogy," he says, but adds that the rising in interest in genealogy isn't restricted to any specific areas of the country. "It's huge. And there's no discernible difference on a provincial basis." The typical person involved in genealogical research, says Muise, is over 40, with a big spike at 55 to 65, the baby boom generation. Muise and Neilson will be visiting many local centres for genealogy research this summer, promoting the survey. The survey is available online now at cusurveycentre.ca/gensurvey. People interested can learn about the results of the survey at www.genealogyincanada.blogspot.com, where reports about the survey's progress will be posted. People will be able to comment and offer opinions on the results. "In a post-modern world, people don't have a firm sense of being rooted," said Muise, "so they pursue genealogy as a way of identifying an understandable past. One of the things we are trying to figure out is what people get out of it, and how will they pass it down."

Donald MacKay Born In: New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada Born On: 29/01/1944 Passed Away In: North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 25/07/2011 Rev. Donald Walker MacKay, 67, of New Glasgow, residing in North Sydney at the time of his sudden but peaceful death at home, on July 25, 2011. No matter where life took Donald, he always deeply treasured his roots and connections to Pictou County. He was born Jan. 29, 1944 in New Glasgow, the son of the late Donald A. MacKay and the late Margaret (Smith) MacKay. He spent his early years in Riverton before the family relocated to New Glasgow. During his teen years he felt a call to Christian ministry, largely influenced by his summer camping experiences at Camp Geddie, Merigomish. A graduate of Acadia University, Wolfville, he pursued academic and ministry training at Presbyterian College, Montreal leading to ordination as a minister of The Presbyterian Church in Canada in 1968. Holding deep interest in the mission of the church, Donald accepted assignments in Italy, Nigeria, Ghana and in the Atlantic region of Canada. Over twenty years of his ministry was spent serving the Presbyterian Church in Nigeria in various capacities, including being a theological instructor for the training of future ministers. In his years as Regional Staff for the Synod for the Atlantic Provinces he contributed to the leadership development of many people, including numerous young people, through his work as the summer director at Camp Geddie. After returning to Canada from Ghana in 2008, and anticipating a new role in ministry in Cape Breton, Donald was diagnosed with cancer that eventually necessitated his retirement from the pastoral ministry. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Marion (Barclay); his brother, Roderick (Lynne) Waverly, N.S. and their family, Aarin, Toronto, Ont., Aarika (Noel) Machat and their children, Keira and Keigan Machat, Dubai, UAE, and Andrea, Dartmouth; his brother, Robert (Melinda) living in Venice, Florida; his mother-in-law, Janet Barclay, Maple Ridge, B.C. and the members of Marion's family; and numerous cousins. He will also be remembered fondly by those who "became his family" during the years he lived in Nigeria and Ghana. Special thanks are extended to those who supported him in these last few years: the congregations of St. James, Big Bras d'Or, Knox, Ross Ferry and St. Andrew's, Sydney Mines; Dr. Bill MacDonald, Dr. Ron MacCormick and the staff of the Cape Breton Cancer Center, and the staff of palliative care. Instead of a visitation, a brief service of prayers and thanksgiving, conducted by the Presbytery of Cape Breton, will be held on Thursday, July 28 at 7 p.m., followed by a reception, within St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines. A memorial service, conducted by the Presbytery of Pictou will be held on Friday, July 29, at 3 p.m. within First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Camp Geddie (PO Box 34 New Glasgow, NS B2H 5E5); the Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of your choice. *************************************** Patrick Petrie Burial services for the late Patrick Vincent Petrie will be held in Lingan at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church Cemetery on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 2 p.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to McGillivray Funeral Home. ************************************** Norman MacIsaac Born In: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 23/07/2011 It is with deep sadness that we, the family of Norman Roderick MacIssac, regret to announce his sudden passing at the An Cala unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on Saturday, July 23, 2011. Submitted by Leanne Graham, Telehealth Site Coordinator It all started with a story that my co-worker told me about his son and daughter-in-law. Like so many Maritimers, Thomas Hill headed west, seeking opportunities. While he trained to be a Federal Guard in Grande Cache, Alberta, his wife Beth was home in Kentville getting prepared to move...and give birth to their first child. Thomas' graduation and first rotation at the penitentiary would prevent him from being in Kentville until late June. The baby was born on June 6. Was there anything that Telehealth could do to bridge the nearly 4000 km and 60-hour drive from Kentville, NS to Grande Cache, AB? After a bit of local discussion, some extra work by the video-conference scheduler, a couple of emails and a test call, the lines of communication were ready for Baby Hill when he or she arrived to meet Dad. Emails from Telehealth coordinators in Kentville to Grande Cache with titles such as, "Do we have a baby yet?" passed almost daily. And then on June 15, just 24 hours after beautiful Madilyn Hill was born, Madilyn and her Mom sat in front of a large monitor in Kentville, NS with Dad at the other end in Grande Cache, AB meeting for the first time... virtually. In another week when Thomas gets his first leave, they will meet again, this time in reality. For me, the experience was refreshing. I am thankful to the Telehealth team in Grande Cache for their enthusiasm and cooperation, the community of staff and friends at Valley Regional Hospital who were so eager to help this family make the best of the situation. And finally to the Hill family, who graciously shared their story that stretched across Canada. Beth, Thomas and Baby Madilyn Hill ****************************************************************************************************** Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CBGHA http://www.cbgen.org

    1. Re: [Cape Breton Co NS] interesting 1841 S. Uist Scotland census w/ comments re: N. Uist
    2. I'm with Scotland'sPeople and they just got very excited about something they found in the S. Uist Scotland 1841 census and I thought I'd share it with you. it states on page 22(?) (there's a spot next to the 22 that might be a blurred number, with this reference; 06/06/1841 Nicolson, Petter, (Census 1841 113/00 001/00 011) Forward 1 the Petter is "sic", as written. "The greater part of the population of North Uist are employed in Agriculture and the manufacture of Kelp, very few can be said to be in the habit of moving from their ordinary place of Residence. It is supposed cannot have been more than thirty individuals or there abouts absent from the parish on Monday the seventh. The has been no Emigration from the parish for the last six months, but for some years past about 300 souls have annually Emigrated from the Island of Cape-Breton Nova Scotia. There will be about the same number going from the different Districts of the Parish in the month of July next. The at the beginning of the second section is "sic", as written there are two things of note. the writer was exceptionally literate, the spelling of the notes are exactly the same which we use today, and it is extremely unusual to find such notes in the census-I've found two myself, one pertaining to the 1841 Cape Breton census, where a census taker exploded in frustration and quit his job-apparently the scattered residents among the hills and mountains generally wouldn't respond to his questions and were difficult to find, and the other was amongst church records, when a body was hidden in the shale on the beach of Suffolk, England but soon disappeared. so some interesting notes show up occasionally in the records-actually I found two others-a clerk practicing his lettering on an ancestor's marriage record, and something which I no longer recall among Dutch records...besides the predicate noting church finances between baptisms and visa versa... best, Cornelia Medford, OR BODY { font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12px; }

Our son Zachary Donald MacDonald passed away Saturday July, 16, 2011 with his parents and family by his side. Zack was born May 31, 1988 to proud parents Donald and Shirley (Bennett) MacDonald. Zack grew up in Sydney Mines and was a student studying political science at Cape Breton University. Zack's dream was to become a lawyer and one day to have his name on a ballot in the political arena. A true Liberal at heart , at an early age he waited in the rain when he was 12 years old to shake Jean Chrétien's hand. That was one of his proud moments. Zack was a friend to a lot of people with his keen wit and humour and was always there to lend a hand or an ear to his friends as is evident from the stories on his Facebook page. Zack loved life; he loved hunting, fishing or just walking on his ancestral land in Scotch Lake. Zack loved his red Camaro, his dog Ellie and his beloved Edmonton Oilers. A highlight for him just a few weeks ago was receiving a call from the Oilers head coach telling Zack "He was part of the team." Zack's love of baseball took him to Ontario in what ended up being the best summer of his life. He followed his Blue Jays to Yankee Stadium and Detroit as well as home games in Toronto. Zack spent the last five months at what he called the Hanoi Hilton. He said he was in Afghanistan fighting for his life. Zachary lost the battle of his life, his memory lives on in each and every one of us. Zack is survived by his parents, his beloved Nan, Grace Bennett, along with many aunts and uncles; Roddie (Jerry) Bennett, Sharon (Fred) Howard, Bobbie (Mia), John ( Kelly), Marjorie ( Leo), Jane, Walter (Lynn), Alounda, Danie ( Marjorie), Peter, Gerard (Kim), Angie (Jimmy), Mary (Larry), Alan (Nancy), Paul (Francis), Michael (Theresa) MacDonald, and many cousins.
