    1. Re: [Cape Breton Co NS] O'Handley Family Cape Breton
    2. Robert K. Proctor
    3. Hello Jack,The family O'Hanley / O'Handley / O'Henley / O'Henly appears in the 1881 and 1891 censuses of Inverness County. They are numerous and the name is spelled a couple of different ways. The family was also common in the Northside East Bay area. There are eight "O'Hanley" families in the 1860/61 Ball's Bridge CensusThey may have come first to PEI and thence to CB.I include one of several observations regarding O'Hanley made by MacDougall: History of Inverness Countyby, J.L. MacDougallDISTRICT SKETCHES 214/215 THE O'HANDLEY FAMILY. The first of this family to emigrate to America was Roderick, na- tive of Uist, Scotland. About the year 1800 he came to Judique and settled down on 290 acres of land. His family were John, Stephen, Angus, Neil, Mary, Sarah and Flora. >From these were descended all the Judique O'Handleys, and their name was legion. We think their remote ancestors were Irish and spelled their name O'Henleys. Whatever their origin they were recog- nized Scotsmen long before they saw Cape Breton, and they seemed of superior stock. They were men of good lives and special talents. Many of them had a decided turn for music rtheir violin players were numerous and noted. They were quite prolific and multiplied fast, but like many more of the early families of Cape Breton they scattered into all lands and spaces. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jack Beeching" <jbee18@shaw.ca> To: <CAN-NS-CAPEBRETON@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 25, 2010 1:22 AM Subject: [Cape Breton Co NS] O'Handley Family Cape Breton > The 1911 census, Town of Dominion, Cape Breton, Shows the following > family. > > Joseph O'Handley, Head, born Nov 1866, Irish, Roman Catholic, Truckman > Lizzie , wife, born Mar 1867 , Irish, Roman Catholic > Daniel , son, born Jun 1893, Irish, Roman > Catholic, Truckman > Maggie , daug., born Nov 1895, " , " > " , > Jessie , " , born May 1898, " , > " " , > Lauchlan , son , born May 1899, " , " > " , > Joseph , " , born Mar 1900, " , > " " , > Tillie , daug , born Aug 1901, " , > " " , > James . son , born Apr 1903, " , > " " , > Mary Bell , daug, born May 1904, " , " > " , > Leon Barnet Walsh, adopt son, born Jan 1904, Irish, Roman Cathollic, > > > I have not been able to find this family in earlier censuses. 1. [Cape Breton Co NS] Spelling of "O'handley"
    2. Douglass Grant
    3. An inquiry regarding the following family recently appeared on this list: Joseph O'Handley, Head, born Nov 1866, Irish, Roman Catholic, Truckman Lizzie , wife, born Mar 1867 , Irish, Roman Catholic Daniel , son, born Jun 1893, Irish, Roman Catholic, Truckman Maggie , daug., born Nov 1895, " , " " , Jessie , " , born May 1898, " , " " , Lauchlan , son , born May 1899, " , " " , Joseph , " , born Mar 1900, " , " " , Tillie , daug , born Aug 1901, " , " " , James . son , born Apr 1903, " , " " , Mary Bell , daug, born May 1904, " , " " , Leon Barnet Walsh, adopt son, born Jan 1904, Irish, Roman Cathollic, I'm not sure how much help I can be in researching this family, but I feel I should point out that the spelling of the name in the 1911 census of Dominion contains neither an apostrophe nor a "d", making it "Ohanley" rather than "O'handley". Also, the given name of the head of the family is spelled "Joeseph" rather than "Joseph" in the census document. This points out two very important ideas. First, spelling of both surnames and given names can vary widely from one document to another, including census records. Second, even when we are morally certain that a particular spelling is wrong, it can only make help more difficult to obtain when the spelling from the original document is altered, since that's what the search engines will look for. Once I found the family on p. 18 of the Dominion census, I was able to confirm that everyone was indeed born in Nova Scotia. (In particular, there appears to have been no recent Newfoundland connection, which is fairly common with Irish surnames.) That surname seems to have been particularly common in George's River, which was part of the Ball's Creek census district in 1881 and Ball's Bridge in 1871. Perhaps that would be a reasonable place to concentrate. Doug Grant

He died strengthened and consoled by the last sacraments of the Catholic Church, of which he was a devout member. The funeral took place Tuesday the 8th inst., at 10 a.m. and after High Mass the remains were interred in St. Mary's cemetery. Rev. Father McKeazie ? officiated. 1. [Cape Breton Co NS] Durney family
    2. Douglass Grant
    3. I have recently found some evidence (in the form of parents' names on death certificates) of a marriage, probably no later than 1844, between an immigrant from the north of Ireland named John Durney and an Ann Grant born in Leitches Creek. The latter would most probably be Ann Musgrave Grant, born 1813, daughter of Peter Grant and Sarah Musgrave. It appears that John Durney's first wife died, and he remarried around 1860. His second wife was named Margaret, possibly O'Brien. There were children by both marriages. John Durney and an unmarried daughter from the first marriage are buried in Lakeside, the second wife in "Old St. Joseph's" Cemetery, both in North Sydney. Does anyone know of previous research on the Durney family? Doug Grant

    3. I am trying to get information on the current owner(s) of the cemetery on Riverside Drive in Sydney. My ancestors are the Howie/Mckinnon/Lipscomb/Mitchell families. Actually, Howie Centre is named for them. I visited Sydney in 2005 and found the cemetery where Capt Andrew Howie and approx 10 others from my history are buried. The cemetery is in sad shape, overgrown, stones knocked over, etc. My father, Roy Mitchell, recently passed away and I would like to get the family plot cleaned up in his memory. I would be willing to come and do it if I had permission. Also, I would like to know if there are any living relatives. I would be interested in any information on any or all four of the above named families. Thank You, Ellen Drake, 13870 State Route 28, Otter Lake NY 13338-3514 USA 315 369-8662.

    3. Hello Everyone I have searched through the archives for this list but cannot find this name at all. Can only hope someone is sitting back and will come forward with a wee bit of info on Neil / Niel ARBUCKLE that we can share. So far, I do have a copy of the Parish Records in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis and it show that Neil was born there August 1, 1804. He would not have stayed in Stornoway very long as by 1806+ he was living in North Uist, Outer Hebrides, Scotland where 5 more of his bro & sis were born. Neil was the 4th child of 9 and all except Neil were born in North Uist. I have copies of the 1861 - 1871 & 1881 census for Sydney, Cape Breton and they show Neil as a school teacher there and his wife is named Effie. His wife was also b. in Scotland but I do think they married in NS or PEI and her full 1st name could have been Euphemia. Neither Neil or Effie appear on the 1891 so probably both died between 1881 - 1891. Neil would have been abt age 77-87 and Effie abt 75 - 85. If anyone can advise me where I may find any more info about Neil or Effie ARBUCKLE, I would appreciate anything at all. Quite sure they were of the Presbyterian religion as if I have the correct person, Neil's parents were Rev. William ARBUCKLE and Flora (MacLeod) ARBUCKLE. Thank You Lorraine Ottawa, Ontario
