hi, Bob, it's been a long time since we last communicated. since then I have moved 800+ miles and changed my name. here is our Margaret's death record. as far as I can tell, you've always been right, though her death record does not list her husband's given name and misspells Allan's last name. otherwise, what you have, and what I have, match up. I forgot to look for Margaret when these came on line, so this is a new clue in the research for me. I do have one question. I have no Daniel in the family, and her brother Donald died young. the Dan or Don who signed as a witness, I have no idea who he is. https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/ItemView.aspx?ImageFile=81-235&Event=death&ID=160130 [1] have you ever found record of the family in Hougharry? I thought I'd found them in an early crofter's census in Baliviphail, but can't prove it. however, Allan's father was Archibald, and the only Archibald McDonald that appears to fit is Archibald McDonald of Baliviphail. still, I could be wrong. your cousin, Cornelia I descend from Margaret's sister Annie. Allan was from Hougharry on the Isle of North Uist and his family settled in Whycocomagh Cape Breton. Sarah was born on the Isle of Harris (or Berneray) and her family settled in River Denys. Allan and Sarah lived in Cow Bay and Sarah later lived in Glace Bay. They may have had a daughter, Margaret, who was married to my gr gr grandfather's half brother, Roderick MacVicar (or Red Rory of Gowrie) and at least two sons, Big Jim of Birch Grove MacDonald and Big Archie of Number 4 MacDonald. Allan and Sarah are buried in the Black Brook Cemetery near Port Morien. I saw the post about the MacDonald family of River Denys area and it reminded me it was probably a good time for me to post again about Austin Seeley and his son, John Byron Seeley (1843-1926 ). John's father was Austin Seeley (circa 1803 d. early 1850). Austin spent many years in Inverness County in Nova Scotia near the River Denys Basin where he operated a sawmill. He married Lucy Vaughn in 1836-37. The family left Nova Scotia in the early 1850 and moved to Refrew, Ontario. Austin died in 1858 (or so) and many family members moved to Illinois. Census records from some of Austin's children indicate that they believed their father was born in New York. However, other records denote his father, Austin was born in Massachusetts. Lucy's census records reflect her parents were born in NB and I believe her family has links to the MacPherson family. Any assistance would be MUCH appreciated, as Austin Seeley has been my husband and his family brick wall for over 40 years. Thanks! JH Seeley
Bob, Yes I do know Wayne..He helped me a great deal when I was doing my husbands family history. I do not believe we are related though. Will be happy to help. Give me a bit of advanced notice so I can make plans to go to the Beaton or College. Barb William Gibbs, died 1926 in Glace Bay, Cape Breton County Item can be found in Registration Year: 1926 - Book: 81 - Page: 474 His parents are shown as John GIBBS, born in England and what appears to be Liza KENNEDY born in Nova Scotia. I have another son, Michael GIBBS who married Esther TOWNSEND a distant relative in my family tree. You mention that John and Eliza had six children, which means I am missing four at this time. Can you fill me in the other children. I do not have access to all my data base at this time but am returning home in a short period of time and maybe I can find some additional information that might help us both. our McDonald's were also of Cow Bay/Port Morein. we have 3 sons I've never succeeded in tracing (how much of Cow Bay was NOT enumerated in census? seems only Mary McDonald McAuley was ever enumerated for the whole family for all available census!) one of the three sons is John McDonald. I don't know anything about him except his name and the names of his parents (Allen McDonald and Sarah McPhail) and the names of his siblings, Archibald, Allan, Mary, Margaret, Donald Archibald, Annie, Kate. for family identification purposes, Donald Archibald died young in a cart accident in the mines, the family was Presbytarian, and there is a monolith with Allan, Sarah and Donald's names on it in Black Brook Presbytarian cemetery. Hi Robert, Thank you for your replies. The site you referenced did turn up an interesting bit of information. Jack
Hi Buck, Thank you for this link. It turned up an interesting bit of info. I am not actually connected to the O'handley clan, just trying to help a friend . Sorry Maggi, I am not connected to the Ohandleys I am trying to help a friend research his family. Thank you to everyone who replied to this query. I haven't had a chance yet to follow up on all the suggestions, but the < http://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/ > site may have cast a new light on things. This site has a delayed registration of birth, and baptismal certificate of Margaret O'Handley, daughter of Joseph O'Handley and Elizabeth Livingstone. According to her affidavit filed in 1963, Margaret's father was born in Belfast, Ireland. Unfortunately no other records there seem to connect to this family. I have also a marriage registration for Lauchie O'Handley and Florence Lewis, in Coniston, Ontario, on which Lauchie names his parents as Joseph O'Handley and Lizzie Livingstone. He states, he was born in Nova Scotia and was 25 years of age. This would give him a birth year of about 1897. Much to think about, Jack
Hello again Jack, If you go to: Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management http://www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm/ A search of: NS Historical Vital Statistics CB County: Surname (contains) Handley Given Names (s) (contains) space Yields: 55 Births 86 Marriages 149 Deaths Almost all will contain various transcriptions of "O'Handley"; a few "Handleys" also appear.
