Greetings Cornelia, In the early parts of Cape Breton, there weren't a lot of churches, but had traveling ministers, some from as far away as PEI & Scotland. Many of the older churches were made of log & wood, and in most cases, the churches had fires & with the parish records being kept in the church, were also burned. So many records are lost, unless it was a traveling minister who may have recorded the info into the books of another parish, some in PEI & Scotland. In the 1860's, the government of the time, required folks to register the birth, marriage & death of folks, and did so for about 15 years in Nova Scotia. It was started up again in 1908, and continues to today. Some other provinces & territories went uninterrupted in the keeping of these records. St. George's Anglican Church in Sydney, was opened in 1791, and served many denominations, although it was Church of England. St Patrick's in Sydney was RC about 1828 & Sacred Heart RC in about 1832 St. Paul's Church of Scotland in Port Morien I think was around 1860's as well as St. Mary's Anglican Church. In Loch Lomond, is where the first Presbyterian church was established in 1838 In St. Ann's, Rev Norman MacLeod established a Church of Scotland around 1820 made of logs. In 1840 a frame church was built. In Louisbourg, traveling ministers from France tended to the RC followers. Traveling missionaries came as early as 1629 to some areas of Cape Breton, but no real church was established at the time. Churches in Baddeck were established in the 1840's, which would include Whycocomagh, Lake Ainslie, Middle River. On the other side of the water, was East Bay, Big Pond, Middle Cape, Irish Vale, Iona, Bras d'Or, Jamestown etc. Still others were established in Mabou, Cheticamp & areas. And others were in Cape North area. *************************************** I just found this listing of churches in Cape Breton, some with established dates and from which county. your comments about early churches and their records intrigues me. my ancestors were in Whycocomagh, Sydney, and Cow Bay/Port Morein. they came around 1812-1822, and were Presbytarian. can you tell me what church(es) were extant at that time in those places for those of Presbytarian faith? Cornelia
There is a section on the Griffins on p.51 of the book "Cape North and Vicinity". The Allisons appear on p.37 of the same volume. In the 1901 census the Allisons are reported as Ellisons. (N.B. I have a piper friend named Wally Ellison who was born in Margaree.) The Catherine Griffin, widow in Margaree in 1858, mentioned by Carol was born Catherine Cameron, daughter of Archibald Cameron of Barra and Mary Cameron of Strathglass. See MacDougall's "History of Inverness County", pp.410-411. She may be the widow of Daniel Griffin, who was married to a Catherine Cameron. In the 1871 census of Ingonish there is a widow, Catherine MacInnis Griffin (b.1826), widow of John? Griffin. She was a daughter of John and Catherine MacInnis of Grand Narrows. There are also in Ingonish in 1871, Michael Griffin (b. 1852) and his wife Tina Allison, d/o Peter and Christy Allison of Aspy Bay. He appears to be a son of catherine MacInnis and John? Griffin. Cheers, Allan J. Gillis
Wondering if anyone would have access to the St. Michael's Parish Catholic Records, MG 13.39. of Margaree area, in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. I Looking for all the Griffins who would have been married, baptized, died (or any other records on the Griffin). They came to the Margaree area in 1815, and then moved to Aspy Bay about 1850. Does anyone have any Church Record of the Northeast Section of Cape Breton (Cape North, Aspy Bay, Meat Cove. I have a William Griffin who married a Catherine McInnis. They got married in Margaree. I need to know who his father was; this must be mentioned in the act. of marriage. Is he the son of Daniel, William, John, or Donald Griffin? He had five children: Michael, Donald, William, Catherine, & Margaret. (I found his children in the census.). I need to find there baptismal or any other church or archives records about them. In 1871, this family was in the Cape North/Aspy Bay area. I would appreciate any info on any Griffin found in theses area (Margaree/Cape North). The Griffin came to Aspy Bay from Margaree about 1850. William Griffin married in Margaree and moved to Meat Cove, Cape Breton, where they both died. They had five children: Michael who died in Gloucester, Donald died in South Carolina, William died in Liverpool, Nova Scotia., Catherine married a Mr. Johnson of Plant Line, Margaret went away from home and did not report her whereabouts."
Greetings, There were very few churches in Cape Breton at this time, and the minister-parish priest would travel from place to place. The RC churches didn't start in CB until 1828, so prior to that, the records are with St. George's Anglican Church. Here is a little more info taken from the parish records of St. George's Anglican Church in Sydney, CB. Griffin, Helen - natural daughter, b) May 12, 1803 to John Griffin & Kindo (a Molatto infant) Sponsors: Henry O'Neal, Mrs. Coristine Griffin, Elizabeth - born August 17, 1798 to Richard Griffin & Ann
Greetings, Here is some info taken from the 1838 Cape Breton Census: In the county of Inverness Katharine Griffin - a widow - 1 girl under 14 yrs & 4 boys over 14 yrs. total # is 6 people Living in: district 112 Township of Margaree. That is all I found so far. Born in Havre Boucher, Antigonish Co. N.S., he was the son of the late Edward M. and Isabel (Gillis) Corbett. Although never a fisherman, his life revolved around ships and the sea. A Second World War Naval Veteran of the Battle of the North Atlantic, he served briefly on HMCS Niobe and then more than three years on the Flower Class Corvette, HMCS Bittersweet. While on HMCS Bittersweet, he made 18 round trips across the North Atlantic with the Convoys. He worked just after the war on the ferry (Scotia), which ran between the Mainland and Cape Breton. With the opening of the Canso Causeway, he joined the Public Service of Canada at Canso Lock and was always proud to point out that it could handle much larger ships than the Seaway. He served at the 'Causeway' for 44 years. Ronnie was honoured with a lifetime membership at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43, Port Hawkesbury. His involvement with the legion through the years was very important to him. His signature trait was the empathy he showed his comrades and to all who passed through his life...as he liked to say, a true small "L" liberal. Ronnie was first and foremost a loving family man and will be sorely missed by everyone. He was famous throughout his community for his whistling, singing (Yellow Bird), walking, good humour and razor sharp Irish wit, which he loved to exercise at coffee club. He loved to stay in touch with people from all the neighbourhoods he lived in. Very well read, he loved to quote poetry from his very early school days. He was a student of the political scene and human nature and always enjoyed a good political discussion, always ready with a comeback. A lifelong Montreal Canadiens fan, he loved to torment anyone who wasn't. He is survived by his loyal loving, supportive wife, soul mate and dance partner of 62 years, Agnes (Chisholm); sons, Patrick, Halifax and Roderick (Lynn), Edmonton; daughter, Claudine Corbett (Jose) Lourenco, Edmonton; grandchildren, Keith (Shayleen) Sampson, Calgary, Jacquelyn (David) Cyr, Toronto, Melissa Corbett (Michael) Robinson, Spry Bay N.S., Jose Lourenco, Toronto, James Lourenco, Toronto, Michaela (Adam) Wier, Halifax; great-grandchildren, Declan and Rylan Sampson, Calgary, Eric Robinson, Spry Bay and Ewan Cyr, Toronto. He was predeceased by his firstborn daughter, Ronalda. As the last surviving member of his family, he was predeceased by brother, John and sisters, Emily Ryan, Hazel Power, Imelda Fougere, Kaye Sparks, Ernesta Bezanson and two infant siblings. Thanks are extended to all the nieces, nephews and friends who spent so much time with Ronnie during his illness. Thanks also go to the caring nurses and LPNs at V5 West Garrison, Camp Hill Hospital who gave him so much comfort during this difficult time. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, 7-9 p.m. with a vigil service at 7 p.m. and a legion service 7:30 p.m. all in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be held in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church on Thursday, 10 a.m. with Fr. Andrew Boyd officiating. The family wishes to thank John Langley at Haverstock's. Family flowers only, please. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to The Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com. Ronnie wanted this remembrance for the comrades left behind, who were never far from his thoughts. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Pearl (Samuel) Cameron. Marg was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard. She worked at the B&W in New Waterford for several years. Marg was dearly loved by her family and so many caring and supportive friends, too countless to name, however acknowledged. Special mention to her friends from the boardwalk in Sydney, Geraldine and Frank, Jules, and all the others who had kind words, a story or a laugh to share. Anne Marie, her dear friend and 'accomplice' with whom she enjoyed a fun and wonderful sisterhood. Her long life friend and guardian, Winston and Rhona who are considered extended family. Marg was a devoted mother and wife and a loyal friend to all. She had a sparkling personality and her innocent, unassuming sense of humour was enjoyed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She had her own unique perspective which was honest and true. She cared deeply for her family and valued her friendships. She gave whole heartedly of herself and accepted the world as it was. She asked little of others and was grateful and appreciative of what she had. Her strong sense of community for her church will lead her home to be with her beloved husband. Now they can share eternity together. We are so thankful to have had them both. RIP. He was 81. Irving was the son of the late Abraham and Rose (Claener) Schwartz of New Waterford. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Diana Usher Schwartz; and his four children, Margo Schwartz (Adrian Noskwith), London, Eng., Joanne Schwartz, Toronto, David Schwartz, Halifax, and Stephanie Schwartz (Brian Brophey), Toronto. He had four grandchildren, Toby and Rose Noskwith of London, Eng., and Rachel and Sophie Fagan of Toronto; five siblings, Ruth Goldbloom of Halifax, Harold Schwartz of Sydney, and the late Joey, Bram and Edna Schwartz; and many nieces and nephews. Irving's parents operated a general store in the coal mining town of New Waterford. Abraham Schwartz died one day before Irving's third birthday, leaving Rose to run the business and raise six children. She was more than up to the task, and although Irving spent one semester at Mount Allison University and another at New York University, he often said he was a graduate of the Rose Schwartz School of Business. Irving made his first of many buying trips to Montreal at age 13. Over the years, Irving owned or invested in a diverse range of businesses, including a hotel, nursing homes, a cable TV franchise, computer software companies, a clinical research company, a wireless Internet service provider, various real estate holdings, a coal mine reclamation company, and the furniture and appliance store that bears his name. At the time of his death, he was president of the Seaside Group of companies, with operations in cable TV, wireless Internet, software development, and clinical research. He was also chairman of Schwartz and Company, the furniture chain, and president of Vulcan holdings, a real estate company. He was a current or past director of Ocean Nutrition Canada Ltd., Virtual Media Productions, Halifax Biomedical, and Green Images. In 1970, Irving helped develop an oyster farm at the Eskasoni First Nation, and four years later, he managed a trout farm for the Cape Breton Development Corporation. Irving was a pioneer in the expansion of high speed internet services to rural areas. He led Seaside's participation in the ambitious project to provide high-speed Internet access throughout Nova Scotia - the first jurisdiction in North America to offer universal broadband access. Seaside will complete its part of the project, covering the nine counties of northern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, by year's end. Irving also served as president of the Children's Aid Society, president of the Lions' Club, chairman of the board of governors of the University College of Cape Breton, co-founder of Junior Achievement in Cape Breton, director of the National Theatre School of Canada, advisory board member of the Dalhousie School of Business, and chairman of the Cape Breton Chapter of the Hebrew University. He was a longtime member of the National Capital Commission, and volunteered with the Nova Scotia Division of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. He served on the boards of the Nova Scotia Business Development Corporation, the Sydport International Free Trade Zone, and the Nova Scotia Community College. Of all these volunteer activities, he was perhaps proudest of his 12 years service as a volunteer firefighter in New Waterford. Irving founded and operated the non-profit Canadian International Demining Corps, which carried out land mine removal operations in many countries around the world, and was part of the impetus for his 1997 investiture in the Order of Canada. In 2003, he was named an officer of the order. At the time of his initial investiture, Governor-General Romeo LeBlanc cited him as, "a staunch supporter of educational institutions, notably the University College of Cape Breton, Dalhousie University's School of Business, and the National Theatre School of Canada ... He is dedicated to the eradication of the use of land mines and the reclamation of mine-polluted land for productive use by indigenous populations," the citation said. When Irving was named an officer of the order six years later, Governor General Adrienne Clarkson described him as, "a visionary entrepreneur and committed philanthropist (who) has made significant contributions to Cape Breton. Irving Schwartz has invested resources, time and expertise in local knowledge-based companies, helping to diversify and develop the island's economy." In eastern Nova Scotia, Irving was well known for fronting television commercials for his furniture and appliance company, always ending with the tag line, "I guarantee it!" Once, while travelling in Bosnia in support of demining operations there, he encountered a group of Canadian peacekeepers and asked if any were from Cape Breton. "I guarantee it," one soldier replied. In 2002, Irving was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, and the following year was inducted into the Nova Scotia Business Hall of Fame. He was also an inductee of the Cape Breton Business Hall of Fame. At the time of his death, he had been designated to receive a lifetime achievement award from the Canadian Home Furnishings Association. In 2008, he received the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, from Dalhousie University. Diagnosed with cancer in 2008, Irving managed to turn even that bad news into a positive achievement. He headed a successful $5.5 million fundraising campaign for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital's cancer unit. He declined suggestions that he seek treatment at prominent U.S. medical centres, insisting he would get better care in Cape Breton. Through several operations and chemotherapy treatments, he continued to work full time, at one point returning to his office three days after surgery. He spent the day before his death working at the furniture store, and attended Yom Kippur services at the Temple Sons of Israel Synagogue in Sydney Friday evening. In a statement Saturday, Premier Darrell Dexter said Irving's "legacy as a community leader and philanthropist will be the achievements for which he is most remembered." Deputy Premier and fellow New Waterford native Frank Corbett said, "Cape Breton was very fortunate to have a leader like Irving Schwartz. His passion for life, family and community will be sorely missed." Irving loved to engage friends and strangers alike in conversation and storytelling. The door to his office at the furniture store was always open, and saw a constant stream of visitors, from titans of industry and politics to coal miners, school teachers, and homemakers. He was known for quietly offering advice and assistance to scores of Cape Bretoners starting out in business or facing business difficulties. His funeral will take place Monday at 11 a.m. at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre, 50 Maillard St., Sydney, with burial to follow at the Hebrew Cemetery on Lingan Road. No flowers, please. Memorials may be made to The Parkinson Society Maritime Region, 7071 Bayers Rd., Suite 150, Halifax, N.S., B3L 2C2, or to The Cape Breton Cares Campaign, Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, 45 Weatherbee Rd., Suite 304A, Sydney, N.S., B1M 0A1. Born in Edwardsville, Oct. 22, 1921, she moved to Westmount in 1922 with her parents, Ernest and Mary (MacKenzie) Fraser. Besides her parents, Vivian was predeceased by her brother, Osborne MacKenzie Fraser. She is survived by four nieces and four nephews. Vivian never married, she devoted her life to her family. First her parents who were of ill health, then to her nieces and nephews and their families, all of whom considered her not just an aunt or a great aunt, but a second mother, and grandmother, but mostly a good friend. Vivian loved the sea and along with her cousin they would take the ferry to Newfoundland as often as they could, just to be on the water. In her younger years, Vivian loved to swim. As kids we would sit in wonder on the shore and watched her swim back and forth across Sydney Harbour. Her greatest hobby was gardening, even after she lost her sight she would help in the garden, although she would pull more flowers than weeds. Her only complaint over the past few years was that she was not able to take her walks through Petersfield, a place she adored. Her nightly calls to family and many friends will truly be missed. He was 81. Topics : Cape Breton Regional Hospital , Seaside Group , New Waterford , Canada , Nova Scotia Paramedics were called to the Schwartz home early this morning. He died shortly after arriving at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. The New Waterford native battled cancer and Parkinson's disease for the past two years. An officer of the Order of Canada, Schwartz was the owner of Schwartz Furniture, the Seaside Group of cable television, Internet, biomedical and software companies and the Sydney-based Canadian International De-mining Corps., a land mine removal organization with operations in many countries. Schwartz recently led a $5.5 million fund-raising campaign to expand the Cape Breton Regional Hospital's cancer centre. He also backed Seaside High Speed's participation in making broadband Internet service available everywhere in Nova Scotia. It was the first jurisdiction in North America to do so. Mark Eyking said Schwartz was the first person to sign his nomination papers when the Sydney-Victoria MP decided to get into politics 10 years ago. He called Schwartz a great mentor who inspired others by leading by example. "Nothing was too big and he would just roll with it," Eyking told the Cape Breton Post. "He would roll with it in kind of a very smart way, but a very simplistic way to roll with challenges. "I've lost a great friend, but in Cape Breton, he's done so much and right up to the end...He's definitely a role model for all of us and inspired so many of us. It's a big loss. It's going to be a big hole in our social fabric and our community." Condolences from other political leaders began to pour in once news of Schwartz's death began to spread. "Irving Schwartz was not only a remarkable business man, his legacy as a community leader and philanthropist will be the achievements for which he is most remembered," Premier Darrell Dexter said in a statement. "I was deeply saddened to learn of his death. "Cape Breton was very fortunate to have a leader like Irving Schwartz," added deputy premier Frank Corbett. "His passion for life, family and community will be sorely missed." Jamie Baillie, interim leader of the provincial Progressive Conservative party, called Schwartz a pillar of the business community. "We have lost an incredible person today and he will be sadly missed," Baillie said in a statement. "His energy and his 'can do' attitude are legendary. His commitment to his business life was matched by commitment to family and to community through humanitarian and philanthropic works. Irving Schwartz influenced and encouraged generations of entrepreneurs and business people and touched the lives of many." Schwartz's funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre. ******************************************************************************************************* Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CBGHA http://www.cbgha.org
