"Beyond the Braes: The Gaelic Songs of Allan the Ridge MacDonald 1794-1868" by Effie Rankin is a wonderful read. Effie, a professor at St. FX, looks at the life of Allan the Ridge from his youthful milieu in Scotland to his coming of age as a poet in Nova Scotia.
