Chronicle Herald September 12, 2007 van BOMMEL, Johannes "John" - 81, Summerside Road, Heatherton, Antigonish Co., passed away on September 11, 2007, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, Halifax, with his family present. Born in The Netherlands, he was a son of the late Johannes and Maria (Bukems) van Bommel. John was a farmer most of his life. He served as a peace keeper in the Dutch Army serving in Indonesia in the early 1950's. He was an avid card player and enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was keen on keeping up with current affairs. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, the former Henrica "Rita" Haazen; daughters, Mary (Richard) Munn, London, Ont.; Anita (Michael) Tait, Heatherton; sons, John (Mary Ellen), Grand Mira North; Joseph (Theresa), Heatherton; Francis (Mary), Grosvenor; Henry (Bernadette), Heatherton; Gerald, Dartmouth; 21 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Lisa and Antonia, The Netherlands; many nieces and nephews in both Canada and The Netherlands. He was predeceased by sisters, Bertha Rovers and Hannah van Wilderan; brother, Joseph. Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish, from 7-9 p.m. Thursday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday. Funeral mass will be celebrated in Immaculate Conception Church, Heatherton, on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Daniel MacDonald presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery. Family flowers only please.
