Hello Everyone, This is my first posting to the new list. I was very happy to see the new news group. Things just seem to come along when you need them. I will explain my dilemma and hope someone can help. Please excuse me if this is a little long. I have been researching my mother's NS family for over 2 years now and have hit a brick wall with my gg-gf Thomas Guinan. I have located his death, 29 Dec 1869 in Halifax and have documents on him starting with the birth of his third child, but before this I can find nothing. Thomas Guinan m. Mary Butler at. 1855, but I don't know where. I have located a number of Guinans (various spellings) in NS from 1800 on to about 1870 and then nothing. Other than people directly related to my Thomas' line, they all disappear. I am trying to locate Thomas' parents and the best lead I have so far is a listing in the 1938 CENSUS OF GUYSBOROUGH COUNTY, CENTRAL DIVISION OF TOWNSHIP OF ST. MARYS INCLUDING SETTLEMENT AT INDIAN HARBOUR, MOUTH OF THE RIVERS SHERBROOKE, STILLWATER, WEST, EAST, ANTIGONISH BRANCH AND BACK LAND IN 1838 Line 158 Patrick Gynan Labourer "males under 6 yr."- 3 "males under 14 yr." -2 "Females above 14 yr." -1 Total.............................. 7 The children in this family are in the right age bracket to be my gg-gf Thomas Guinan and the brothers would be the right ages to account for other Guinan/Gynan/Guynon/Guynan/etc. families I have found. They would have been Catholic. I have not been able to locate this family on later census films of this area and I have been told that there was no Catholic Church in the area, that the area would have been served by Antigonish Church district. I have checked the LDS records and can find no material to cover the Antigonish Catholic Church records for this time. I have been in contact with a number of people who deal in Guysborough Co. and they can find no other trace of this family...BMD's or otherwise. They have all suggest that I go to Antigonish. I am not familiar with Antigonish and wouldn't even know where to begin to look. What I would like is if someone familiar with the church records could take a look for me and see if they can find the names of the children or direct me to someone who I could write to. If anyone knows if there are LDS film of Catholic Church registers which would have covered this area and time, please send me the film numbers and titles. I live in British Columbia so access to NS records is limited to what I can get through the public library or the FHC. Any help or suggestions would be very welcome. Thank you Leslie in BC
