Halifax Herald May 20, 2004 GRANT, Sister Ellen (Sister Marie Brenda) - 79, Sister of St. Martha, Antigonish, died at Bethany on May 18, 2004. She was in the 56th year of her religious life. Sister Ellen was the youngest of two girls born to the late William Henry and Teresa (Dalton) Grant (Sydney). Her sister, Margaret, predeceased her in 1995. Sister Ellen entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha on August 15, 1945 and pronounced her first vows on August 15, 1947. Prior to entering the community, she received her commercial diploma from Mount St. Bernard in Antigonish and worked for one year. In 1966, after working in the field of social work for 15 years, Sister Ellen graduated with her diploma in Social Work from the Martime School of Social Work. After two years of office work, following her first profession, Sister Ellen ministered in social work for a period of 43 years. In Nova Scotia she served at Catholic Charities in Sydney and Dominion, Child Welfare Services, Sydney and Family Welfare in Antigonish. In Saskatchewan she served at Catholic Charities in Regina. Sister Ellen served as Director of Sisters in First Commitment for a period of three years and as local leader for 10 years while living at Martha Community, Sydney. In 1994, she retired from full-time ministry in social work and did volunteer service with the Victorian Order of Nurses, Sydney. In 2001, because of failing health, Sister Ellen moved to the Motherhouse, Bethany, and in 2002, she moved to the Extended Care Unit. Her remains will be resting at Bethany, the Motherhouse, beginning today at 1 p.m. where a Celebration of Vigil will be held this evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 21, in Bethany Chapel.
