Jeannette > was the daughter of Mary J. (DeCoste) and Edward V. Levangie, both > from Nova Scotia, Canada. She and her younger brother Edward, grew > up in East Braintree, MA. Jeannette graduated from Sacred Heart > High School, Weymouth, MA in 1936 receiving a four-year scholarship > to Regis College in Weston, MA, from which she graduated with a > degree in Social Work in 1940. She was employed by Boston Catholic > Charities for 38 years as a social worker in the field of adoption > and child welfare, during which time she also earned her M.S.W. > from the Boston College Graduate School of Social Work (1961). > Residing in the Wollaston section of Quincy, MA, Jeannette's > ministry included the care of her widowed father, serving as a > lector and religious education teacher in her parish, involvement > in Legion of Mary activities, and maintaining the family home. She > first became acquainted with the Daughters of the Heart of Mary > through a Boston Franciscan Priest and entered the community in > 1950. She made first vows in 1953 in Canaan, NY, and Perpetual Vows > from 1977 in Holyoke, MA. After the death of her father in 1974, > Jeannette offered to assist in the work of the Marian Center in > Holyoke. She served as Director of the Retreat Ministry there from > 1978-1988; worked for six years as Secretary to the U.S. Provincial > of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary, and in 1995 was appointed > the Superior of the Marian Center. In 2001 she retired but remained > a resident of the Marian Center, where she stayed active, attending > daily liturgies and special celebrations, and became a core member > of a contemplative prayer group for the sisters in 2002. She also > accompanied several professed sisters on their spiritual journeys. > In August of 2003 Jeannette enthusiastically celebrated her 50th > Jubilee. Entering Holyoke Medical Center on April 6, 2007, > Jeannette peacefully passed away on the morning of April 7th. > Predeceased by her brother, Edward, she is survived by a sister-in- > law Maureen Levangie of Onset, MA; her nieces, Ellen Amantea of S. > Easton, MA, Denise Kravitz of N.
