Chronicle Herald August 30, 2007 MacDOUGALL, John Bernard - 93, died peacefully on August 28, 2007, in R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish. Born in Lakevale, Antigonish Co., on January 18, 1914, he was a son of the late John A. and Catherine Anne (Beaton) MacDougall. He was a well-known farmer, fisherman and carpenter. He was also a very civic-minded person, having served as a municipal councilor for District No. 2 for 24 years, from 1961 to 1985. On council he served on a number of boards and committees, including Deputy-warden, for a period of time. He was a strong supporter of a variety of community activities, such as credit unions, co-operatives, telephone and electrical services to rural areas. He was involved with the formation of community Credit Unions in Antigonish and was the last surviving charter member of St. George's Fishermen's Co-op, a predecessor to the present day North Bay Fishermen's Co-op. Along with being community minded, John Bernard was a strong proponent of educational values having served for a number of years as a member of the former Antigonish Municipal School Board, as well as a participant in early People's School broadcasts. John Bernard served his church as a Parish Warden for a number of years and also helped design and build the present day St. Columba Church in Lakevale, and the chapel in Jimtown. He was a lifelong member of the Progressive Conservative Party, serving various functions and positions on many executives, both provincial and federal, and participated fully in all political activities. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Margaret (MacNeil); sons, Beaton (Irma), John R. (Mary), Carroll (Sharon), Allister (Bernadette), Bernie (Anne), Neil (Kathy), Robert (Mary), Michael, Dan (Mary), all of Antigonish; daughters, Patricia (Pat Dunn), New Glasgow; Dr. Beverly, Vancouver, B.C. He is also survived by 35 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, as well as sisters-in-law, Harriet (MacGillivray) MacDougall and Christine (Burke) MacDougall. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been predeceased by brothers, Dr. Daniel (Theresa MacDonnell) and Donald; sisters, Marie (Colin) Boyd, Anne MacDonnell (Joe) and Kay (Edward)) Berrigan. He was also predeceased by granddaughter, Lynn MacDougall; nephews, Johnny Boyd, Ronnie MacDougall, and Joe Berrigan. The family would like to thank the staff of R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home for their wonderful care and compassion our father and grandfather received while a resident at the home. Visitation 7-9 p.m. today, and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant St., Antigonish. Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Columba Church, Lakevale, Rev.
