    3. Chronicle Herald August 10, 2007 SMITH, James "Roy" - 65, Halifax, passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 8, 2007, in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Antigonish, he was a son of the late Herbert D. "Bert" and Harriet (Chisholm) Smith. Roy was a graduate from St. Martha's Hospital School of Clinical Laboratory Technology, having obtained his certification in Diagnostic Cyto-Technology from the Toronto General Hospital and the Pathology Institute, Halifax. His career in laboratory work was spent at St. Martha's Hospital, Antigonish, and the Oshawa General Hospital, Oshawa, Ont. Roy had a second career in nutrition management, having obtained his certification from Humber College, Toronto, Ont., and by correspondence from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, Calgary, Alta. His working career in nutrition management was spent at QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. In his off time Roy enjoyed doing volunteer work with various community groups, both in Nova Scotia and Ontario. Roy took a great interest in heritage and family history and was a member of the Antigonish, Pictou and Colchester Historical Associations, as well as the Genealogical Association of Nova Scotia. His other interests included photography, gardening, furniture refinishing and rug hooking. Church was always an important part of Roy's life. In his younger years he was a member of St. James United, Antigonish, and more recently a member and active participant of Bedford United Church, Bedford. He is survived by brothers, Allister (Mary Ellen), James River, Antigonish Co., and their family; Robert (Linda), New Glasgow, and their family; sisters, Lynne (John) Tolson, Bedford, and her family; Karen, Antigonish; Pauline, Dartmouth, and her family; uncle, Clifford Smith, Toronto; aunts, Mrs. Edith Williams, Toronto, and Mrs. Isabel Whidden, Antigonish; many cousins and many friends. He was predeceased by infant sister, June. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will take place Saturday, August 11, at 10:30 a.m. in Bedford United Church, 1200 Bedford Highway, Bedford, with a reception to follow in the church hall. Burial will take place at St. James-St. Paul's Cemetery, Antigonish, at a later date. Flowers gratefully declined. Should friends desire, donations in memory of Roy may be made to a cause that you believe in. Roy wants to thank all those who gave him support in this part of his journey.
