Chronicle Herald May 16, 2007 LANDRY, Arthur Joseph - 1924-2007. Art, beloved husband of Hilda, passed away on May 10, 2007, at his home in Antigonish, at the age of 82. He was born July 24, 1924. Though he had limited formal education, by the time he was 14 years of age, with the help of his father, Aimé, and brothers, George and Emile, he had successfully built and sold his first fishing vessel, having taught himself to design and build by reading Craft boat building manuals and observing how other vessels were built. The family boat building business flourished, producing as many as nine vessels per year until 1956. That year, he and his brother Emile moved to North Sydney, Cape Breton, where they worked together for three decades at the North Sydney Marine Railway. During his working years, Art became a master of many trades. He erected houses including his own built in 1952 in Petit de Grat, which is still occupied. He acquired a variety of skills, becoming a journeyman carpenter and shipwright. In the 1970s, he obtained his sea captain's license. He became a proficient auto mechanic, electrician, plumber and furnace installer. He worked as a crew foreman building overpasses on the Baddeck highway in Cape Breton and in the construction of the Seal Island Bridge. He and his brother Emile erected the wooden housing on the Englishtown ferry which is still in operation. Throughout much of his working life, Art operated his own fishing vessel. He fished cod, lobster, swordfish, halibut and whatever else the nets might catch. In his retirement years, he could often be seen at the Ballast Pier in North Sydney repairing nets, filleting fish and offering sage advice which always began, "My dear man...", a phrase which was truly self-descriptive. Art is survived in his immediate family by his wife, Mary Hilda; his son, Julien; daughter-in-law, Brenda; his grandchildren, Michelle and Marc; and his sister, Marie. He was predeceased by his father, Aimé; his mother, Cecile; his sister, Christine; his brothers, Emile and George; and his beloved sister, Helen. He is also survived by Helen's children, Irene, Leona, Annette, Claude, and Celina; and his brother Emile's daughter, Janet. Art's family wishes to express special gratitude to the Marchand family, including Aunt Marina, Uncle Helaire, Philip, his wife Laurie, Parry and his wife Sonya, and Dr. John David Chiasson, who all provided daily personal comfort and solace to Hilda and Art during the past several months. We also wish to express gratitude to all relatives and friends, too many to list, who have eased Art and Hilda's journey. A memorial service will be held in St. Ninian's Cathedral in Antigonish at 10 a.m. Friday, May 18. "My dear man indeed, may you rest in the heavenly peace you have earned!"
