Hi Folks, Before I send the next batch of obits from The Casket, I would like to present this modest request. I am sending this note separately so those who generally read the obit postings at a later time will see this message first. My request is this -- if you want an obit, please respond to me in a timely fashion. To get a request for an obit 2, 3, or 4 weeks later has me running in circles. It kind of defeats my attempt of trying to move forward and get caught up. (I do not save all these obits on my hard drive, so it means digging the obit out again and rescanning.) I know life is busy these days and everyone is going in ten different directions at once. So, I think I will post the obits and mention a date 5-7 days later that I will scan/send the obits. Hopefully, this will work out for all of us. On a side note, I hope everyone has enjoyed using the new Nova Scotia Historical Vital Statistics website. (I have held back on sending The Casket obits for this very reason!) It's great to have this new resource!! Best, Linda ;-)

Actually as my father onece said. Some of the Benoit's came to Boston and "Americanized" the name. It became Bennett Barbara
(Thinking out loud -- I wonder if the name Bennett is a misspelling of Benoit. There were a few Joseph Benoits in Antigonish. I didn't find any Bennetts.) BOSTON DAILY GLOBE May 21, 1923 Bennett killed in car crash H.A. Sherman, Boston City Employe arrested Auto strikes fence nearing bridge at Marshfield MARSHFIELD - May 20, charged with driving while under the influence of liquor and with manslaughter, Henry A. Sherman, a civil engineer in the employ of the City of Boston, whose home is at 12 Chauncey Pl, Jamaica Plain, was arrested by the Marshfield police tonight following the death in an auto accident of Joseph Bennett, 43, of Antigonish, N.S., who was in Marshfield for a few days doing work on some houses being built at Brant Rock. According to the story Sherman told at the Plymouth police station, where he was taken, he came down from Boston today with two friends, Leo A. Russell of Boston and Wilfred A. Pitts of Beachmont, to bring Bennett back with him to do some work in Boston. He says that they started off for Boston with Bennett on the rear seat with Pitts. As they went up the Green Harbor road and approached the railroad bridge, he says another automobile came along at high speed and to avoid it he was forced to turn sharply aside. In so doing, he claims, he went through a hole in a fence by the roadside and a fragment of the fence projected into the car and struck Bennett killing him instantly. According to the medical examination, Bennett's thorax was crushed and his lungs punctured. State Highway Inspector George Park of Plymouth hurried to the scene of the fatality, and he told the police afterward that from what he could ascertain Sherman was driving at a high rate of speed and, in attempting to take the sharp S curve near the bridge, crashed through the fence and that a piece of the fence flew up and killed Bennett.

Author: catholic Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.novascotia.antigonish/564.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Here is the obituary for John Pettipas and Leo MacGillivary Newspaper Obituary; Chronicle Herald, Halifax, Nova Scotia 4 July 1962 Bodies of two lobster fishermen missing since June 8 were recovered from the waters of St. George Bay, Antigonish County Tuesday. Dr. Carman MacIntosh the local coroner ruled that no inquest was necessary into the cause of death to 49 year old John Pettipas of Lundy, Guysborough County and his 34 year old brother in law Leo MacGillivary of Antigonish. Pettipas was found floating in water close to Monk's Head Tuesday morning by Allister Beaton of South Side Harbour. Late in the afternoon Beaton's neighbor Alexander Chisholm came across the body of MacGillivary about a mile down the coast and ten feet from shore. The two men were hauling lobster traps off Mahoney's Beach on the night of June 8 when they ran into trouble. Observers on shore said they could hear what sounded like shouts of distress in the distance but a heavy sea made their voices almost indistinguishable. Efforts to reach the area in a fishing craft failed. The swamped boat used by the ill fated men was found the following morning about two miles from the point at which they set out. Dragging operations and a concentrated search by navy divers failed to turn up anything. Pettipas' body was found in an area about 50 yards from where the boat was recovered June 9. Pettipas is survived by his wife the former Garnet Avery of Lundy, three sons Leo 16, Wilson 5, and John 18 months and a daughter Dora 14. Also surviving are his parents Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Pettipas, Larry's River; five sisters, Lottie (Mrs. Arthur Pitts), Antigonish, Clara (Mrs.Roy MacDonald), Antigonish, Catherine (Mrs. Simon Manette), Charlos Cove, Margaret (Mrs. Clarence Avery), Larry's River and Mary (Mrs. Leo MacGillivray, Antigonish. His remains will be resting at his residence today with funeral services Thursday. Requiem Mass will be held in St. Peter's Church, Larry's River, 9am. MacGillivray is survived by his wife the former Mary Pettipas (a sister to John Pettipas) and one son Leo Jr age 3, his father Ronald MacGillivray, Antigonish, five brothers Grant and Ronald, Antigonish, David, Toronto, Thomas and Harry, Detroit; one sister Margaret, New York. His remains will rest at his residence from Thursday afternoon. The funeral will be held Friday with Requiem Mass in St. Ninian's Cathedral at 9 o'clock.
