Author: LoisMWells Surnames: McLEAN and GRANT/CAMERON Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.novascotia.antigonish/32.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: As a newcomer to this Antigonish message board, I've been going through the archives and came across this post from March 2002, inquiring about info regarding Angus Grant m. Jane Cameron 1818. I have a Family Group Record (prepared in 1988 by a genealogy friend who was helping me identify my Antigonish McLean/Grant/Cameron ancestors)which SUGGESTS Angus and Jane (?Cameron) had 11 children: John, Angus, Alexander Nelson, Jane, Ann/Nancy, William, Hugh, Donald, Isabella, James, Mary. Probable Dates of Birth for these range from 1818 -ca 1838. I have a copy of the microfilmed Estate Papers for Angus GRANT dated Jan 1872. He and Jane were living on a farm in "the Ohio". Happy to share if this is of interest. Yesterday I found at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nsantigo/Cemeteries/northlochabercem.html an Angus Grant and his widow, Jane who died 4 years later. Also buried in the North Lochaber Cemetery I see a John Grant d. 1870 - could be the eldest child of Angus & Jane Grant - who predeceased his father. Their second son, Angus "the younger", was appointed administrator of his father's estate. That seems consistent, if the eldest son had already died. Ann/Nancy Grant (Probably 5th in the birth order of Angus & Jane's children) married Archibald McLean of Keppoch/later Mayfield. One of their ten children, my grandmother Molly/Mary Ann McLean who moved down to Lowell, Massachusetts - along with a younger brother Neil. Another of their siblings moved to Portland, Maine. I would enjoy hearing from "Mary" who posted the original inquiry in 2002, or anyone else researching these families. Thank you to all who have made material available to us long-distance researchers [George Newbury - No Lochaber Cemetery transcription - Thanks!] and have responded with references to excellent online resources [Dennis Ryan -Thanks!] Lois M. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: heamaha Surnames: Harris Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.novascotia.antigonish/582.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Dennis, It would seem that the Waldren Studios photos is indeed the children of the same C.E. Harris. Both the 1901 and 1911 censuses show no other Harris' in Antigonish that could qualify. I am trying to figure out, however, which four children would be in the picture. I have concluded that their were 9 children born, based on some deductions I state below (along with oral history). Burton Harris b: July 06, 1888 in Nova Scotia, Canada (per 1901 Census) Gerald 'Juals' Harris b: May 17, 1889 in Antigonish, Nova Scotia (per 1901 Census) Ralph E. Harris b: March 04, 1892 in Nova Scotia (per 1901 Census) d: 1909 (per St James United & St. Paul's Anglican Cemetery transciptions, Antigonish) Edith Harris b: April 28, 1893 in Nova Scotia (per 1901 Census) d: 1939 (per St James United & St. Paul's Anglican Cemetery transciptions, Antigonish) Arthur R. Harris b: 1896 in (per St James United & St. Paul's Anglican Cemetery transciptions, Antigonish) Reginald Harris b: August 27, 1897 in Nova Scotia (per 1901 census) Kenneth Bruce Harris b: June 1901 in Antigonish, Nova Scotia (per 1911 Census) d: 1963 (SSDI) Guy Harris (interpreted wrong as 'Greg' on 1911 Census) b: October 1902 (per 1911 Census) Jean Harris b: September 1904 (per 1911 Census) Deductions/Assumptions/Guesses: 1. I am assuming that Gerald and Juals are the same child. Family oral history confirms that there is a Gerald. But, the 1911 census list Gerald as born in 1888, one month after Burton, which is not possible. Besides, I am seeing other discrepancies in the 1901 and 1911 censuses. Charles and Ella's birth years and ages were not completely accurate in either census! 2. Family oral history also says that one child died at/near birth. I am assuming that this is Arthur based on the cemetery transcription. 3. Family oral history also says that one child died from a hunting accident and/or falling through ice. I take that to be Ralph based on the cemetery transcription, but he might have still been alive at the time this photo was taken. As there are two girls in the photo, and there are only two girls in the family, they must be Edith and Jean. Since Jean was the youngest daughter, she appears to be about 3 in this picture. Assuming that, I would guess this photo to be taken about 1907. Edith, however, would be 14, and the girl in the back looks younger than that. So, there is a bit of a dilemma. So, at the time of this photo (let's say about 1907), that leaves the following: Burton - Jul 1888 (19) Gerald/Juals - May 1889 (18) Ralph - Mar 1892-1909 (15) Edith - April, 1893 (14) Reginald - Aug, 1897 (10) Kenneth - June, 1901 (6) Guy (not Greg!) - Oct, 1902 (5) Jean - Sep, 1904 (3) Also, another question becomes, who are the two boys? It was helpful to get the ref to the Waldren Studios archives @ Dalhousie Univ., as well as the references to two books with info on the McLeans & Grants of Keppoch. My paternal grandmother was MaryAnn/Molly McLean, dau of Archibald and Nancy Grant McLean. I believe Archibald was the eldest son of Lauchlan and Elizabeth Campbell McLean. Family lore says their land grant was at Keppoch, later known as Mayfield. I would be interested in sharing more of the research I have on these families.
