Born in Antigonish, he was the son of Anne (Martin) Prosper and the late Wilfred Prosper. John was a graduate of U.N.B., attaining his Degree in Forestry and Civil Engineering. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and golfing. Besides his mother, Anne, he is survived by daughter, Dawn (Stevens) Tony, Eskasoni First Nation; grandchildren, Damaris, Denae, Ryan, Jr. and Dré; brothers and sisters, Patsy, Freda, Joanne, Doreen, Joan, Kerry, Karen, Clara, Michael, Darlene, Sharon, Ronald, Brian, P.J. and Norma. A private family viewing was held on Friday followed by cremation. A Celebration Feast will be held in John's honor at the Paq'tnkek First Nation Gym on Sunday, September 9, at 2 p.m. All are invited. Chronicle Herald September 1, 2007 MacKEEN, Scott Cameron - Passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 30, 2007, in St. Mary's Memorial Hospital, Sherbrooke, at age 83. He was born in St. Martha's Hospital, Antigonish, on June 17, 1924. He was a son of the late Forrest and Edna (Manson), brother to Elda (deceased), Elsie (deceased), Alice, Greta, Wilbur (deceased), Herman, and half-brother to Scott Rudolph (deceased). He grew up in Aspen and only left his cherished St. Mary's River Valley for short periods of his life. He was a licensed auto mechanic by trade and earned an Education Certificate from U.N.B. Scott had a lifelong passion for the great outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, 4-wheeling and golfing. He had a memorable round of golf and several 4-wheeling trips with family just a few days before he passed away. Actively involved in community service, he was a past member and officer in many organizations including the renowned St. Mary's Male Choir, a Past Master of Queen's Masonic Lodge No. 34 of Sherbrooke, Melrose Oldsters Club, Snowmobilers Association of Nova Scotia, Aspen Community Centre, St. Mary's Rifle Club, and Sherbrooke Legion No. 56. For his devotion and service to his community, Scott was recognized with a Volunteer of the Year award presented by the Province of Nova Scotia. He also found time to coach the Aspen Thunderbirds and Aspen Eagles softball teams. He loved socializing at card parties and dances. Scott was known for his helping hand and inventiveness. He took great delight in craftsmanship that amused, entertained, and surprised the young at heart, such as his creative motor home, his dinosaurs floating in the meadow, and the stories he wrote about family, friends, and his life. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Upon demobilization he met and married Evelyne (Chisholm) in 1947 and they had 52 loving years together. They had seven children, Heather (Herb), Melodie (Gerry), Clive (Margo), Natalie (Robert), Dale (Lenore), Mark (died at birth), Darlene (Kevin); 22 grandchildren, Krista (Milind), Chad, Daryl (Kendra), Travis, Tara (Craig), Janice, Brendan, Tania (Brad), Trent, Tyson, Tyler, Gavin, Adam, Jaret, Matthew, Kylee, Travis (Pam), Crystal, Haley, Derek, Teagan (died at birth), Logan, and seven great-grandchildren, Dylan, Chaitan, Emma, Aiden, Sharmila, Kayla and Lauren. In 2001, Scott married Hazel (Therrien) (Hayter). They had six wonderful years together and she will miss him greatly. Scott was a devoted and loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend, and will be dearly missed by all. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the caring staff of St. Mary's Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Kirk Memorial United Church, Aspen, where a celebration of the life of Scott Cameron MacKeen will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Aspen Baptist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Scott's memory to Melrose Oldsters Club, Kirk Memorial United Church, Aspen Baptist Cemetery, and the Canadian Cancer Society.
Chronicle Herald September 1, 2007 DUNBAR, Douglas Everett - July 12, 1931-August 22, 2007. Doug was born in Antigonish and grew up in Mulgrave. He attended Logie School and then took a machinist trade with the CNR in Moncton, N.B. He worked on the railway in Stellarton, Charlottetown, P.E.I., Fairview (Halifax), and Moncton, N.B. He also worked in mines in Pine Point, N.W.T., and in Elliot Lake, Ont. He retired to Edmonton, Alta., and then to Victoria, B.C. He was predeceased by his parents, Roderick Smith Dunbar and Ruth (Fisher) Dunbar, and his stepmother, Priscilla (Irish) Dunbar. He is survived by his daughter, Ruth (Bruce) McCowan; grandchildren, Christa, Jesse, and Andrew; special friend, Ruth Gowans, and his ex-wife, Flora (Holmes) Mitchell, Victoria B.C.; sister, Olive Dunbar, Mulgrave; brother, Donald (Yvonne) Dunbar, Sherbrooke; uncle, Wilfred Fisher, Lochaber; aunt, Katherine Fisher, Antigonish, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Special thanks to all of his friends at Mount Douglas Court who supported him, especially in the last year. Doug was a charter member of West Shore Presbyterian Church and a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (Victoria). It always gave him pleasure to help others. He will be greatly missed. A celebration of Doug's life will be held in First Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Dr., on Thursday, September 6, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to West Shore Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 760 Latoria Rd., Victoria, B.C., or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Chronicle Herald August 30, 2007 MacDOUGALL, John Bernard - 93, died peacefully on August 28, 2007, in R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish. Born in Lakevale, Antigonish Co., on January 18, 1914, he was a son of the late John A. and Catherine Anne (Beaton) MacDougall. He was a well-known farmer, fisherman and carpenter. He was also a very civic-minded person, having served as a municipal councilor for District No. 2 for 24 years, from 1961 to 1985. On council he served on a number of boards and committees, including Deputy-warden, for a period of time. He was a strong supporter of a variety of community activities, such as credit unions, co-operatives, telephone and electrical services to rural areas. He was involved with the formation of community Credit Unions in Antigonish and was the last surviving charter member of St. George's Fishermen's Co-op, a predecessor to the present day North Bay Fishermen's Co-op. Along with being community minded, John Bernard was a strong proponent of educational values having served for a number of years as a member of the former Antigonish Municipal School Board, as well as a participant in early People's School broadcasts. John Bernard served his church as a Parish Warden for a number of years and also helped design and build the present day St. Columba Church in Lakevale, and the chapel in Jimtown. He was a lifelong member of the Progressive Conservative Party, serving various functions and positions on many executives, both provincial and federal, and participated fully in all political activities. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Margaret (MacNeil); sons, Beaton (Irma), John R. (Mary), Carroll (Sharon), Allister (Bernadette), Bernie (Anne), Neil (Kathy), Robert (Mary), Michael, Dan (Mary), all of Antigonish; daughters, Patricia (Pat Dunn), New Glasgow; Dr. Beverly, Vancouver, B.C. He is also survived by 35 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, as well as sisters-in-law, Harriet (MacGillivray) MacDougall and Christine (Burke) MacDougall. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been predeceased by brothers, Dr. Daniel (Theresa MacDonnell) and Donald; sisters, Marie (Colin) Boyd, Anne MacDonnell (Joe) and Kay (Edward)) Berrigan. He was also predeceased by granddaughter, Lynn MacDougall; nephews, Johnny Boyd, Ronnie MacDougall, and Joe Berrigan. The family would like to thank the staff of R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home for their wonderful care and compassion our father and grandfather received while a resident at the home. Chronicle Herald August 26, 2007 CAMERON, W. Scott - Passed away August 24, 2007, in QEII Health Sciences Centre. Born in Lochaber, Antigonish Co., he was the second son of William Hugh and Florence (Cameron) Cameron. Educated in the public schools, he was a graduate of the Provincial Normal College, Dalhousie University and Mount Saint Vincent University. Most of his teaching career was served in Halifax County as a teacher, principal, supervisor and consultant. Scott was a part-time lecturer in the Education Department of Mount Saint Vincent University and he traveled in the Maritimes doing teacher training in-services. Scott served for eight years in 2405 Squadron (Aux) RCAF in Halifax and Station Beaver Bank, and a further 10 years with 292 Kiwanis Squadron Air Cadets, retiring as a Squadron Leader. An enthusiastic equestrian, he was a founding member of the Nova Scotia Equestrian Federation and served for many years as a director. Most recently, he was chairperson of Medication Control with N.S.E.F. With his brother, Wilfred, he helped to raise, train and race a number of Standardbred Pacers at Sackville Downs and Truro Raceways. A member of Wellington United Church since its founding, Scott sang in the choir and represented Waverley Pastoral Charge on Halifax Presbytery and served on the Christian Life and Growth Committee. He was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the Royal United Services Institute of Nova Scotia, the Truro Horsemen's Club, the Nova Scotia Equestrian Federation and Nubodys Fitness Centre. Scott served for a number of years as a volunteer at Arborstone Enhanced Care, a nursing home in Halifax. In 1967, he was awarded the Centennial Medal by the Canadian Government for dedicated service to Canada. A believer in lifelong learning, he maintained an interest in local and family history, and following a Maritime tradition, learned to play both bagpipes and fiddle. He is survived by nephews, Donald (Colleen), Fort McMurray, Alta.; Rodney, Truro; nieces, Nancy (Ian) Lobban, Ostrea Lake; Shelley Cameron, Montreal; Debbie Cameron, Mount Uniacke; sister-in-law, Marion Cameron, Halifax; great-nieces, Lindsay (Nick) Richards, Kelly (Brian) Power, Jessica (Terry) Carew, Laura Lobban, Heather Cameron; great-nephews, Andrew Cameron and Cameron Lobban, as well as great great-nephews, Cameron and Cody Richards, Alan Power and Nathan Carew. He is also survived by godson, Bennett Hendsbee, Ottawa. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother, Wilfred and sister-in-law Mary; brother, Ivan and nephew Alan Cameron. Visitation will take place 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Dr., Lower Sackville. Funeral service will take place Tuesday at 1 p.m. in St. John United Church, Fall River, Rev. Valerie Kingsbury officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall.
