The Casket, Feb 9, 1899 Sudden Death - Lauchlin Gillis was suddenly taken ill while sawing wood on last Friday in the yard of his home on Main Street, Antigonish, and expired shortly after. He had arrived at the good old age of 86 years, and during his long life he was ever the quiet, honest and contented Christian man that everyone in this community - where he lived for twenty-five years - knew him to be. He was a native of Arisaig, this County, where his remains were interred on Saturday. A widow, four sons and three daughters survive him. May he rest in peace. The Casket, Mar 30, 1893 The death of Mr William Macdonald, Glassburn, in this County, loses about the last of the emigrants from the old country. An honest, thrifty, hardy class of men these immigrants were, and Mr Macdonald was no exception. In 1842 he came out from Scotland in the back Peterhead, landing at Pictou, and soon settled in what was then known as Black River. Possessed of more than ordinary intelligence, upright and industrious, he early became known as one of the first farmers of that thriving settlement, whilst his genial social qualities endeared him to all who knew him. At the time of his death he was 83 years of age. He leaves three daughters, all married, and two sons, one of whom is the well, and favorably known Dr. Colin MacDonald, Roxbury, Mass. The stainless reputation of every member of his family is the best tribute to his own truly Christian character. They were his support and comfort in his old age, as he was to them in their youth the example of every virtue. The Casket, Jan 28, 1897 Seldom are tidings of death, received with more profound and general sorrow than the message which conveyed to the people of St Andrews the sad intelligence of the demise of Mary Bell, daughter of Donald and Janet McDonald of St. Andrews, who died in Belford, Mass on Wed 3rd inst., after an illness of three weeks, at the early age of 21 years. Few of her age in the parish were better known or more highly esteemed than the deceased. Early in 1891, while yet of tender years, she assumed the responsible duties of organist in connection with the Church choir, here in a position which she filled up to the eve of her departure for the U. States in the fall of 1895 (?). In this capacity, possessing more than ordinary musical talent, together with strict and faithful attention to her obligations, she gave the highest satisfaction, while her mold manner, invariable good cheer, and sweet and humble disposition endeared her to all the members of the choir. On the 6th, her remains, sadly accompanied by her brother and two sisters, arrived at the home of her parents and on the following morning after a Requiem High Mass offered by Father Fraser, PP, were interred in the new cemetery underneath the shadow of the Church wherein she herself, had laboured in love, as faithfully and so well in the service of her Maker. May her soul rest in peace.
The Casket, Mar 10, 1898 Although the last line or so of this one is cut off, I thought it worthy of sending. Death of a Centarian - Allan McDonald "Beg" who was probably the oldest resident of the County, died at Morven, Keppoch, on the 25th ult. at the patriarchal age of 103 years. He was a native of Morar, Inverness-Shire, Scotland. He forst emigrated to New Brunswick. After remaining there for some years, he removed to Nova Scotia, settling on a farm whereon he died. By industry and hard work he succeeded in making for himself a fairly comfortable home. He was a good neighbour, a kind husband, a fond . .
The Casket, Oct 7, 1897 Mr Edward Ronan died at his home at the West River, on Sunday night. Although he was a man of very strong physique, his death was not unexpected, as he had been ailing for some time. He was widely known throughout the county. Up to the date of his last illness, he was a very active man, and his extensive farm was one of the best worked in the County. His funeral, which took place on Wednesday, was very largely attended. He leaves a wife, two sons and three daughters to mourn his loss. May he rest in peace. Hugh Gillis Landry, a bright boy of 15 years, son of William Landry, died at his parents home, Antigonish, on Tuesday morning, after suffering from Bright's disease for a year. Previous to his illness he was to be seen at all the ceremonies at the Cathedral serving as an altar boy where his devout conduct was always noticeable. His parents have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement. May he rest in peace. Two young girls, native of this County, died in Massachusetts on Friday last. One was Barbara McAdam, aged 23 years, daughter of the late John McAdam (John Allan's son), Briley Brook. She was but twelve hours sick. Her remains were brought here on Tuesday by her brother Hugh for interment. Her mother, three brothers and five sisters live to mourn their loss. May her soul rest in peace. The other was Kate McDonald, aged 17 years, daughter of John McDonald, Ban, formerly of Beaver Meadow. May her soul rest in peace.
The Casket, June 30, 1898 McPherson - At the residence of her uncle, Joseph McPherson, Clydesdale, on Sunday, June 10, in the fifteenth year of her age, after an illness of two months, borne with exemplary patience, and consoled by all the rites of the Church, Margaret, daughter of the late Alexander and Janet McPherson. The deceased, the sixth member of her family that has fallen victim to consumption within as many years - father, mother, son and three daughters having been carried off within that time. The survivors - three daughters and one son - with their relatives, have the sincere sympathy of all in their most sad affliction. RIP McMillan - At Fraser's Mills, on the 26th inst., after an illness of a few months, after receiving all the consolations of the Church, Sarah, beloved daughter of Hugh McMillan, in the fourteenth year of her age. Her death, even at this early age, leaves a cloud of sadness, not only in her family circle, but even beyond it; for her kind and lovable ways made Sarah a general favourite. Her bereaved parents and fond brothers and sisters will be consoled by her happy death, for it found her in her pure innocence - a bud on earth to bloom in heaven. May her soul rest in peace.
The Casket, Oct 31, 1895 McDonald - At Tewkesbury Hospital, of brain fever, Catherine Belle, relict of the late Dougald McDonald of Malignant Cove, this county, and daughter of the late John McGillivray (Miller), Knoydart, Pic. Co. in the (?) year of her age. She leaves to mourn three brothers and two sisters to share their loss. RIP The Casket, Nov 22, 1900 McNeil - At Lakevale, Ant. on Tuesday, 20th inst. Flora Bell, aged 7 weeks, child of Mr & Mrs D C McNeil. Died at Dunmore, South River, on the 14th in the 17th year of his age, Allan, son of Mr John McIntosh. Deceased, who had lived for some time with his uncle, Rev. D J McIntosh, PP of Descousse, CB, was a young man of most amiable character. His remains, followed by a large concourse of friends and relations, including the Rev. Father McIntosh, were laid to rest in South River Cemetery. The Rev. James Fraser PP of St Andrews, who administered the last sacraments, was also present at the interment. His parents, brothers and sisters have the sincere sympathy of the whole community in the early demise of a young man so worthy and promising. Duncan Grant, of Briley's Brook, in this county, passed away at his home on last Friday 16th inst., aged 75 years. The deceased was a man of strong character, tempered with a most kindly disposition. When only 16 years of age he went to Ottawa - then Bye-Town - and made considerable money. Returning home about 40 years ago, he then devoted himself to farming. He married Catherine Dunn of Monk's Head, by whom he has a family of ten children, all of whom with their mother survive him, and mourn the loss of a kind and devoted husband and father. May his soul rest in peace.

The Casket, Oct 3, 1900 Mr Colin C Chisholm, a well-known builder, died yesterday morning at the residence of his son, Alex C Chisholm, 10 Schuyer Street, Elm Hill, Roxbury. The cause of death was old age. He was 81 years of age. Mr Chisholm was for many years one of the largest builders in the Maritime Provinces, having been born in Antigonish, NS. Many of the handsome structures in various cities in Canada were erected by him. He came to Boston about 14 years ago and of late years had not done any business. He leaves three sons and three daughters. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock in St Hugh's Chapel, Roxbury. - Boston Herald, Oct 15 The deceased was known in this County as "Colin of Cape Jack." Obituary The well-known Capt. Thomas Boudrot died at his residence in Arichat on Thursday evening, the 23rd inst., after a lingering illness, which he bore with resolute endurance and Christian resignation. He was yet in the youth of old age, being only fifty-five years, and leaves a wife, a large family, and an extensive circle of friends to mourn their irreparable loss. Capt. Boudrot was one of the many descendants of a French family that settled in Cape Breton over a century ago. When quite young he took to the sea-faring life, and in due course of time became Shipmaster and owner. Being of a kind heart and charitable disposition, the needy never asked of him in vain. He was brother to the late Hon. Chas. Boudrot, a member of the Legislative Council, who died a few years ago. Requiescat in pace. The sad intelligence of the drowning of Albert Petipas, on the homeward voyage from the Grand Banks, reached here from Boston a few days ago. This is the third young man belonging to Descousse who met with a watery grave within the last three months.

He leaves a sorrowing widow, two sons and four daughters to cherish the memory of a good father and upright man, who enjoyed the esteem of all who knew him.
