Halifax Herald November 12, 2004 MacDONALD, Daniel Joseph "Dan J." - 75, Heatherton, Antigonish Co., passed away peacefully at home on November 10, 2004, surrounded by his loving family. He was a son of the late Dan Alex and Jennie Agnes (Cameron) MacDonald (Marydale, Antigonish Co.). Born in Antigonish, Dan J. attended Provincial Normal College in Truro and in 1975 graduated with B.A. and B.Ed. degrees from St. F.X. University. His teaching career of 37 years was spent in Marydale, Caledonia Mills, Springfield, Fraser's Grant (principal) and Reverend H.J. MacDonald School, Heatherton. Dan J. was very much community oriented and was involved in local charities and organizations. He was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan, as well as a fan of the Boston Red Sox. He enjoyed Scottish music and was a regular follower of the Newfie Fever Band. Surviving are daughters, Geralyn (Dan) MacDonald, Port Aux Basque, NL; Jacqueline (Craig) Bobbitt, Halifax; Donalda (Dale) Trenholm, Bayfield, Antigonish Co.; Denyse MacDonald, Ottawa; Eleanor MacDonald, Ottawa; sons, Gregory (Helen) MacDonald, Ottawa; Paul MacDonald, Heatherton; their mother, Margaret and his special loving friend, Marie MacDonald and her daughter Leanne MacDonald; sisters, Catherine (Ronald) Bowman, Monastery; Mary (Joe) Purcell, Marydale; brother, Frank (Florence) MacDonald, Saint John, N.B.; grandchildren, Adam and Danny Trenholm, Megan and Ian MacDonald, Mark and Matthew Bobbitt, Mike, Emma, Teddy and baby Dan J. Born in Antigonish, he was a son of the late John E. and Elizabeth (Williams) Smith. He was a proud veteran of the Second World War, having served overseas 1939-1945, mostly in Holland. He worked at the former Bonners Store, Antigonish Wholesalers and for years with the Department of Transportation as a Weight and Measure inspector on the Canso Causeway. He was an avid hunter and sports fisherman. A proud member of Arras Branch 59, Royal Canadian Legion. Surviving are daughters, Caroline (John) Burke, Toronto; Patricia McKenna, Antigonish; Margie (Harry) Stewart, Quispamsis, N.B.; sons, Trueman (Laurie), Tennessee; Richard (Mary Ann), London, Ont.; loving and proud grandfather of 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sister, Caroline Fry; several nieces and nephews. Milton moved with his family to his wife's home in Antigonish in 1972, where he was employed with Ben's Limited until the time of his illness. He will be fondly remembered for his kind heart and his keen sense of humour. He will be missed by his bedside companion, Sparkle. Halifax Herald November 5, 2004 DONOVAN, Rita - Antigonish, died peacefully Wednesday, November 3, 2004, in Antigonish. She was a daughter of the late Michael and Mary Ellen (Purcell) Donovan. She was a graduate of Mount Saint Bernard College and Saint Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Education in 1937 and 1938. She was a lifelong supporter of St. F.X. and Mount St. Bernard. She also held degrees in Library Science from the University of Ottawa and a M.Sc. in Textile Chemistry from Leeds University, England. She was employed for most of her career by the National Research Council Textile Chemistry Division in Ottawa until her retirement and return to Antigonish. She enjoyed playing bridge. Rita's life was faith filled. She was an active member of St. Ninian's Parish and a member of the CWL. She is survived by her sister, Genevieve Donovan; brother, Robert (Geraldine) Donovan, all of Antigonish; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Sister Saint Ursulina C.N.D. (Alice), Mary Cecilia "Mim", Johanna "Josie" Donovan and Helen Mackasey. Visitation will be held today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish. Halifax Herald November 5, 2004 DONOVAN, Rita - Antigonish, died peacefully Wednesday, November 3, 2004, in Antigonish. She was a daughter of the late Michael and Mary Ellen (Purcell) Donovan. She was a graduate of Mount Saint Bernard College and Saint Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Education in 1937 and 1938. She was a lifelong supporter of St. F.X. and Mount St. Bernard. She also held degrees in Library Science from the University of Ottawa and a M.Sc. in Textile Chemistry from Leeds University, England. She was employed for most of her career by the National Research Council Textile Chemistry Division in Ottawa until her retirement and return to Antigonish. She enjoyed playing bridge. Rita's life was faith filled. She was an active member of St. Ninian's Parish and a member of the CWL. She is survived by her sister, Genevieve Donovan; brother, Robert (Geraldine) Donovan, all of Antigonish; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Sister Saint Ursulina C.N.D. (Alice), Mary Cecilia "Mim", Johanna "Josie" Donovan and Helen Mackasey. Visitation will be held today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish. Born in Antigonish, she was a daughter of the late John Frederick and Ann Onna (McCarthy) MacIntyre. Judy was employed as administrative assistant at Mr. Dairy in Toronto, and worked many years at Speedy Propane in Antigonish. She was a devoted member of St. Leonard's Parish, Brampton, and a former member of Heatherton CWL. Surviving are husband, Archie; daughter, Glenda (Joseph) Benoit, Brampton; sons, Larry (Melissa) and Brendon (Marla), Heatherton; grandchildren, Kailin and Jessica Benoit and Kevin Tate; brothers, Larry (Eileen), Joe (Terry), Brampton; Alex (Peggy), New Glasgow; Robert and Greg (Barbara), Toronto; Clare (Dianne), Brampton; sisters, Anne (Verne) MacIntrye and Florence (John) Szabo, Brampton. Halifax Herald November 2, 2004 MacPHERSON, Michael Roderick - 60, passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer, at Toronto Grace Hospital, October 18, 2004. Michael, a graduate of St. Dunstan's University, Charlottetown, P.E.I., was a teacher with the Toronto Separate School Board until his retirement in 1999. A passionate lover of music, he enjoyed the arts and travel as well. Born in Antigonish, he was the son of the late Cornelius and Margaret MacPherson of Caledonia Mills; loving brother of Ann MacKinnon, Halifax; Joseph (Sharon), Fredericton, N.B.; the late Lauchie (Alta), Tatamagouche; half-sisters, Karen MacPherson-Wong, Toronto; Glenda Murphy, Doris DeVries, Dorothy Robinson, Halifax. He will be sadly missed by his adoptive family, the MacLellans of Antigonish - Joseph and Marcella, Edwin, Janis Peters, Anne, Leon, Marie Buchanan, Cyrus, Joan, the late Michael, Nancy Buckley, and Kevin; also, Loretta Baker, Margie Gillis, and Joan Gilfoy. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Toronto, October 22. A memorial mass for Michael will be celebrated in St. Andrew's Catholic Church, St. Andrew's, Antigonish Co., at 11 a.m., November 6, with Rev. Robert Neville officiating.
