Hello List, From time to time we seem to have little activity on this (and some other county) lists. I was wondering what you thought about seeing if we could combine lists with a couple other nearby counties. The clear benefit of having a list only for Annappolis is clarity - it deals with the county alone. But I think there are several advantages to combining with a couple other counties. Combining lists might give the list a critical mass of activity to keep the correspondence and information flowing. Famillies move back and forth and having a slightly wider area of focus for the list might help uncover clues as other users are involved. Some border areas are difficult to handle: for example Bear River - it's in Annapolis, but there's a close tie to Digby. I'd propose that the list be combined with the Diby and Yarmouth lists and called something like the NS-SouthWest. What do you think? Or is everyone at a standstill with their research? I have seen a couple of messages come through the Nova Scotia list referring to Annapolis County, makes me wonder do our membership want to still have this list. Very few posts have come through since I have taken over, the list is here folks, so why not use it, perhaps someone out in cyberspace has the answer you may be looking for. > > If anyone has a solution or thinks they have a solution to the quietness of list, I am not adverse to listening. > > Regards > Christine Joudrey > List Admin > > > ==== CAN-NS-ANNAPOLIS Mailing List ==== > > Pruning the family tree is NOT permitted! > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 >
Jeff and others, First of all, this is not really a proper subject to discuss on the list, particularly since the List Admin is away on vacation at the moment, but there are a few things you must know regarding your suggestions: 1. RootsWeb has purposely set the lists and boards up this way for good reasons, and you would need their agreement to make any changes before doing anything else. The odds of their approval, in my opinion, is virtually zero. RootsWeb simply is not likely to approve overlapping areas to existing county lists. They already have a few of them that were in place when the current county setup was created, and I am not aware of a single instance where the change has been a positive one. 2. I am a subscriber only on this list, but as Admin of the Yarmouth and Shelburne lists and boards, I consider it a bad idea and would never support such a change, since it would be both counterproductive and and would be damaging to both counties in the long run, because they would both tend to lose their identities. I do not attempt to speak for the List Admin of Digby, only Yarmouth and Shelburne, but it would surprise me if she (the Digby Admin) did not agree with the above at least to a limited degree. 3. Before starting a subject like this on the list, it would be a common courtesy to discuss it PRIVATELY with the List Admin first. It is entirely out of line to do otherwise, and for that reason, I will not comment further on this subject on the list and I suggest that nobody else do so, either. If you wish to discuss such a thing, it needs to be taken privately to the List Admin first. If you wish to have more activity on the Annapolis County List, why not post some information yourself or respond to some of the posts yourself to encourage others to do so? That would be far better than conspiring behind Christine's back when she is away, in my opinion. I will not respond further to this subject on the list, because it is inappropriate to do so. If anyone wishes to discuss it privately, feel free to correspond with me off list, but be aware that you may or may not get any reply until Christine is back, and I will forward all correspondence to her as she needs to be aware of it.
