Greetings Gentle Folk, Allow me to introduce myself as a new member of this list. My name is Gerry Crouse and I am the grandson of Janet (Barkhouse) Lockhart. Janet was married to Elisha Bennett and, after he died, married James H. Lockhart and lived in Middleton. I was raised by Janet and James in Middleton. We lived just across from the railway station in Middleton in a place that was built in the 1890s as a hotel called Hatfield House. Somewhere along the line, Hatfield House was converted to apartments and that is how I knew it. I would love to know more about the history of the building which, by the way, was burned down in the 1980s because of its decrepit condition. My lineage is somewhat confusing. Somewhere between marriages, Janet (Jennie) Barkhouse lived with Austin B. Lockhart and had two children by him, including my mother, Hazel Louella Bennett. All of this happened in Kings County. Hazel married Ronald Francis (Frank) Crouse of Middleton. He is still living (in Ontario) but we are, shall we say, estranged. Hazel died at age 31 of cancer. So that is how I fit into the line. I have traced Austin B. Lockhart back to his grandparents, Thomas Lockhart and Eliza Fuller, but haven't got any further than that. I have little info on Janet Barkhouse beyond her marriage to Elisha Bennett. Would appreciate any and all info about Janet including her marriage to James H. Lockhart. She is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Middleton along with James H. but I haven't been able to locate an obituary. Found one for James but not Janet. Also, my gggrandfather was George Crouse who shows up in the 1881 census in New Ross District in Lunenburg County. There is reference there to my ggrandfather, Rufus Crouse, as being born in East Dalhousie, Kings County. So gggrandpa George MAY have lived in East Dalhousie at one time prior to 1881. By the 1901 Census he had moved to Nictaux, Annapolis County. So I call him George the Wanderer. I assume he spent the rest of his days there but I haven't been able to find an obituary or other record of his death. Also I haven't been able to find out who his parents were. I have an obituary for Rufus Crouse, George's son, my ggrandfather, also Of Nictaux. If anyone has any info about Crouses in Annapolis County I would be grateful. I have just started at this genealogy stuff and am finding out it is addictive. <g> Cheers to all! Gerry Crouse Aylmer QC -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
