    3. Gerry, We're told Lockhart House was apartments, or a boarding house. Remembered as being painted green. My husband remembers Laurie & Flody (Robar) Crouse, & their son Frank, & his son Roger, all from Nictaux area. Did you attend MRHS? Sandra ----- Original Message ----- From: Gerry Crouse To: CAN-NS-ANNAPOLIS-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, September 25, 2005 9:36 PM Subject: RE: [NSAnnapolis] Hatfield House, Middleton Thanks for that, Sandra. Does you family member remember it as a hotel when it was known as Lockhart House? You are right about the hospital. Soldiers Memorial was right across from the high school. I think it is now a nursing home. I was born there. Funny, the hospital where I was born is now a nursing home, my elementary school is now a museum, and the old house is gone. Sigh. Frank Crouse is my dad. It is entirely possible that he lived in Nictaux Falls. His parents, Laurie and Flody (Robar) Crouse lived in Nictaux but it is possible they lived in Nictaux Falls at some point. I haven't had any contact with my dad since I was 4 or 5 years old. He is still alive. Yes, Gerry is short for Gerald but if you call me Gerald I won't write anymore. <g> Cheers! I asked an older family member about the Hatfield House & she remembers the building being referred to as the Lockhart House in the mid-1900's. As I remember, The "old" Middleton Hospital was across from Middleton Regional High School, & was used until 1961-62, when the present Soldiers Memorial Hospital was built. In Your Sept 17 posting, you mentioned (Frank) Crouse, Did he ever live in Nictaux Falls,? (South of Middleton.) Much appreciated if you do. (I am also researching CROUSE/LOCKHART/BARKHOUSE/ROBAR lines.) Albert J. Hatfield, born 12 Apr 1848, lived in Middleton according to the 1901 Census. Albert ran a hotel, Hatfield House, built in the early 1890s and located right across from the old DAR station in Middleton. The hotel was later converted into apartments and run or owned by my step-grandfather, James H. Lockhart, and my grandmother, Janett (Barkhouse)Lockhart. I grew up in that building, thus my interest. It was burned down as part of a firefighter training exercise in the 1980s. James H. was the night watchman at the Scotian Gold apple processing plant. The Annapolis Valley MacDonald Museum has been very helpful in searching old copies of the Middleton Outlook but hasn't been able to turn up very much info about Hatfield House. I would like to learn more about the history of the building - exactly when it was built and by whom, a history of its ownership, when it was converted to apartments, etc. I wonder if anyone here knows anyone who might have further knowledge of this building. Someone, for example, who knows the history of hotels in Middleton. Any and all info, references and suggestions would be most welcome and appreciated. 3. Hi Sandra, That is helpful. I remember the old place being cream coloured with green trim. I have asked the local museum if they have anything on Lockhart House. Frank Crouse remarried after my mom died in 1955. She was only 31. Died of cancer. Roger may be his son from his second marriage. I know he had at least three sons by his second marriages but I don't know anything about them. Dad would be about 80 or so. Yup, I went to MRHS. Graduated in 1959. I was president of the student council that year. In a couple of weeks, I am meeting up with Art FitzGerald who graduated the same year. We haven't seen each other since high school. One of my best buddies when I was a kid was a character named Max Coleman. Any relation? Cheers!
