    3. Greetings Gentle Folk, Although this isn't strictly speaking a genealogical inquiry, I hope the list owner will allow me a one-time quick exception. Much appreciated if you do. (I am also researching CROUSE/LOCKHART/BARKHOUSE/ROBAR lines.) Albert J. Hatfield, born 12 Apr 1848, lived in Middleton according to the 1901 Census. Albert ran a hotel, Hatfield House, built in the early 1890s and located right across from the old DAR station in Middleton. The hotel was later converted into apartments and run or owned by my step-grandfather, James H. Lockhart, and my grandmother, Janett (Barkhouse)Lockhart. I grew up in that building, thus my interest. It was burned down as part of a firefighter training exercise in the 1980s. James H. was the night watchman at the Scotian Gold apple processing plant. The Annapolis Valley MacDonald Museum has been very helpful in searching old copies of the Middleton Outlook but hasn't been able to turn up very much info about Hatfield House. I would like to learn more about the history of the building - exactly when it was built and by whom, a history of its ownership, when it was converted to apartments, etc. I wonder if anyone here knows anyone who might have further knowledge of this building. Someone, for example, who knows the history of hotels in Middleton. Any and all info, references and suggestions would be most welcome and appreciated. 3. Gerry, As a partial response to your post, history is part of genealogy as well so posts such as this are more than welcome. It is almost impossible to study genealogy without at least a side interest in history and even a touch of sociology and a few "ologies" as well, so your query is more than welcome here. Unfortunately, I myself cannot be of much help with your query, but hopefully someone else out there can offer some guidance or information to you. Good luck. I hope you find what you are looking for. Have you tried the Annapolis County GenWeb site? David E. 3. Gerry, (is that short for Gerald?) I asked an older family member about the Hatfield House & she remembers the building being referred to as the Lockhart House in the mid-1900's. As I remember, The "old" Middleton Hospital was across from Middleton Regional High School, & was used until 1961-62, when the present Soldiers Memorial Hospital was built. In Your Sept 17 posting, you mentioned (Frank) Crouse, Did he ever live in Nictaux Falls,? (South of Middleton.) 3. Hi Gerry, In the U.S. all cities and towns have a "Building Department" as part of their City Hall and Town Hall, and one of the functions is to approve "building permits" for people who want to build a new building or fix an old building. I don't know how far back in history this goes. But, I was wondering if the "Building Department" of the town or city you are asking about would have records of the Hatfield House when someone first asked to build it. And, what some people forget is that, around here, the Building Departments and/or the Department of Public Works keeps track of every street and road in the town. So, sometimes, if you're trying to find a street where an ancestor used to live (which might have had its name changed), calling "town hall" might get you an answer to your question.
