Greetings All. "Genealogists, historians, and researchers across the country won a major victory today as Industry Minister Allan Rock announced the immediate release of the nominal records from the 1906 census. Ontario Senator Lorna Milne (Liberal -- Peel Region) welcomed the news." So reads the opening paragraph of a News Release issued today, 24 January 2003, by Senator Lorna Milne. The full text of Senator Milne's News Release, and other pertinent News Releases, can be found on the Post 1901 Census Project website at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census The announced release of the 1906 Special Census of the Western Provinces is indeed a major victory for genealogists and historians who have been actively campaigning for this for the past five years. It is felt that release of the 1906 Census will lead the way for the eventual release of the 1911 and subsequent Censuses of Canada. We are grateful to Industry Minister Allan Rock for recognizing what is right and proper, and doing what legally should have been done in 1998. We are pleased that the Minister has released the 1906 records in full, and without restrictions, on the same basis as 1901 and earlier records have been available. We are grateful also to MP Murray Calder, and especially to Senator Lorna Milne for the effort they have put in for us to reach this point in our campaign. We have won a major battle, but the war is not yet over. We have yet to deal with expected legislation that must ensure the orderly and continued release of Historic Census records, after the legislated period of closure. We expect that legislation to be brought down shortly after Parliament resumes sitting at the end of January. We trust Minister Rock, in drafting the legislation, to remember that what we seek is the same unrestricted access to records after, now 1906, that is currently available for records up to then. Greetings All. I have just been advised, once more, that due to circumstances beyond our control, the expected announcement from Industry Minister Rock has been delayed once more. This time until tomorrow morning. I am assured that it is unlikely there will be any further delays. I will be getting up very early in the morning in anticipation of receiving a call from Ottawa advising that the announcement has been made. As soon as I know, you will know. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Gowning up for the good guys will be Paul Clark, Dianne Hunter and me. We are expecting two Justice Department lawyers to present argument on behalf of the Powers of Darkness. Dougald Brown of Ottawa will be representing the Privacy Commissioner. The Information Commissioner was removed as a party to this particular action at his own request last year. The lawyers are very excited. This hearing will take place in a court room open to the public but these courtrooms are not large and the arguments will be interesting only to legal minds. Before driving across country to attend, ask yourself - can you really listen to a full day's debate on the statutory interpretation of a century old Order-in-Council and the fine points of administrative law? The policy issues and importance of access to the census to our family, local and national history will be referred to only in passing (unless the Judge asks). Any of you who do want to attend, PLEASE ask me about court room etiquette in advance. Lois Sparling --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. This new institution is designed to offer Canadians throughout the country greater access to the diverse experiences and voices of Canada. To describe this new entity, the name Library and Archives of Canada is currently being used. We are seeking your input on a new name for this innovative and forward-looking institution. All submissions will be carefully considered and taken into account as the process of creating the new institution moves forward. The final decision on the name of institutions rests with the Government of Canada. Please write to us before January 31, 2003, with your suggestions and a short explanation of why your name should be considered for Canada's newest heritage and cultural institution. To all:- There should be great publicity, from CBC-Halifax to newspapers, so keep watching, listening and reading!! Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee ---------------------------- Greetings All. It appears that the child in all of us will have to anticipate the trip to the ice cream store for just a little longer. I have just hung up on a telephone call from Ottawa wherein I was advised that the announcement we have been waiting for from Industry Minister Allan Rock has been further delayed. The announcement will now come on Thursday January 23, 2003. I was given an explanation for the delay that is too lengthy and convoluted to repeat here. I was assured that the problem is not political, but is the result of some bureaucratic technicalities. There are apparently some procedural "T"s to be crossed and "I"s to be dotted to ensure that no one (read Chief Statistician) can come after the fact and claim foul. I am assured that these technicalities will not affect the content of the announcement. As before, I was advised that when it is finally made, everyone will be very happy with the announcement. I have had some small hints here and there that lead me to believe this will be the case. Have patience for a few more days, I believe the wait will be worth it. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Just be patient, folks!!!!! We still need petitions and wiping the BLUE off the board! Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee =========== IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM GORDON Greetings all. By this time, everyone should be aware that we have been expecting a major announcement regarding access to Post 1901 Census records to be made by Minister of Industry, Allan Rock. It was expected that this announcement would be made this coming Thursday, 16 January 2003. I have just been advised, however, that due to todays announcement regarding Mr. Rocks decision not to run for Prime Minister, his office decided to delay the announcement we have been expecting by a few days. It will now be made next Monday, 20 January 2003. The added delay may be frustrating to some, and no less so to members of the Canada Census Committee. We have been advised, however, that we will be very happy about the content of the announcement when it comes. Perhaps our 'joy' regarding the announcement will be enhanced by the delay -- somewhat like that of a child envisioning a trip to the ice cream store. Until Monday, we will wait and see. Hi folks, Well, after having a somewhat bad experience, I have reloaded my gedcom on rootsweb's worldconnect. Primary families are Goldsmith, Burns, Knickle, Delaney, Longley. Secondary seem to be spead all over ;-) If anyone notices errors, or has further info, I'd really appreciate hearing from you. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=sue_burns Oh and ignore the Balcolm, Banks, Beals, and Bents. Some of them are distant relatives, but I'm afraid I got really bored one night and started typing in the first pages of the genealogies in the History of Annapolis Co. okay, so I was more than bored............. Hello Members looking into information on the followering John S Mc Kenzie of Lower Granville farmer deceased 1914. He left a widow Hattie or Dora McKenzie, with chlidren Allester,Addie, Robert,George , Ward, and Josephine who was unmarried. There was another son James Mc Kenzie who was b 1881 but was deceased before his father. This family is shown on the 1881 Census for New Caledonia Granville Annapolis living with his parents Alexander and Mary Mc Kenzie, who were aged 84 and 77 years they were Advent/Scotch and Bapt/Dutch. Is there a special cemetery for the Adventist ,or is there a McKenzie Plot in Granville or nearabout. Sorry this message is long, but still would love help Tess
Hi Tess, I'm sorry that I can't help you with John S. McKenzie but my husband is a descendant of John's aunt Eleanor McKenzie who married Thomas Sproul(e). I have this family only as far back as Alexander McKenzie and Mary Wilkins so I would be interested in corresponding with you about this line if you are willing. Please e-mail Gordon Watts or myself -- accidents do happen, but one needs addresses for communication. Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee ============ Greetings All. With today being the first day of a new year, it seems that my computer decided to start over again as well. Due to an unexpected twist when setting up my home computer network my email program decided to go bye-bye, along with about 3000 past email messages and my address book of almost 1000 addresses. I do not believe that all of this has been somehow deleted but it has gotten lost in the maze of folders and directories. Some day when least expected, I may once again find my messages which include many regarding my genealogy which has been on hold the past few years, and which I will sorely miss otherwise. In the meantime I have managed to partially resurrect my address book by importing the one from my laptop. There are, however, many that were in my main PC address book that were not included with my laptop addresses. I had a special group list to which I directly sent Census messages. If you are one who normally received my messages directly but receive this message only through a mail list posting, please contact me to ensure that I have your address and can include it once more in my group address list. Dear Muiel: When you get up and running, get Back UP MY PC, it costs about $79. US but well worth it. Also go to http://www.jefflevy.com . He is So. Calif. computer whiz on our local radio station and has all kinds of tips on his site. One is on how to back up your url and email to disk, iomega or cd. ie. if you lose it, its out of the computer and can be replaced. As a former attorney, keeping stuff out of my computer was a life saver. They could take the machine, but I had the disks. I have a whole bunch of families up there from my Nathaniel Barnes and Annis____ who migrated circa 1758 to Annapolis Co. When I can get more info. may ask for a look see or two.
