To Canadian researchers with ancestors in early Maine. What is now known as Cumberland Co., ME did not come into existance until 1760. So if you have anyone born before that in Harpswell, Topsham, etc. they would have been born in York County. You can Googel to each and find their history. Good hunting. Gene Barnes Costa Mesa, CA
Hi again; I am hoping there is someone who knows Lynda Shaffner (maiden name). Her father was the late Andy Shaffner of Tupperville. She went to school in Tupperville (early 1950's)and later to Bridgetown Regional High. I have some Tupperville school pictures I would love to send her. (or anyone else). If you could get her to email to me I would really appreciate it. Everett Fredericks
Hi Everyone; I am helping my cousin in ON who is looking for any and all information on her GG grandfather ISAAC HAYES who married Phoebe Durland. Isaac was born about 1798-1800. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Ev Fredericks in sunny BC

Yeah, it tells me this family member is going to continue to frustrate me. :) I've spoken to people who have very elderly relatives who remember him and how well thought of he was. Unfortunately, that doesn't help me pin down the facts about him. Thanks for the info on this other John McAndrews. Who knows, he might prove to be the elusive ancestor. :) All the best, Sandra -- Sandra L. Sandra: If the John McAndrews who died in 1896 has a wife that died in 1884, it is not likely that she took over from him at the light house. John McAndrews, who was married to the Christina who died in 1903, is most probably the son of James McAndrews. It is very probable that he remarried to the Katherine E who is also buried at Port George, and the father of Herbert, buried there also. The local paper here would be the Middleton Outlook, but there are very few copies before 1900. Just a few scattered copies in the 1890's. The Bridgetown Monitor was published during the 1890s. But normally during those years you would only find a death notice, if anything at all. Not sure if this helps. Ric
Is there anyone on the list who can do an obituary lookup for me? I have two John McANDREWS who died in Port George, Nova Scotia. I'm trying to determine if they are the same person, or if they are related.. Info on one comes from his headstone in the Port George Hillside cemetery. It shows that he died on 6 Jun 1896. He has a wife named Eleanor who is buried next to him. She died 30 Sept 1884. I think this is the father. The second comes from a newspaper clipping that my uncle has. It talks about a John McAndrews who was keeper of the lighthouse in Port George. He died at age 79 and has two daughters, Martha and Jennie. His wife took over the lighthouse upon his death. Unfortunately for me, whoever cut out the clipping didn't keep the source info, so I don't know which paper it came from or on what date. Does anyone know if the archives of the papers serving Port George are available? I couldn't find anything online and I've tried dozens of obituary sites, so far with no luck. If someone has the ability to look up the obituary for the 6 Jun 1896 death, then I should be able to figure out if they are the same person, or perhaps father and son. Thanks for your help. Trying this one again.... At this point I'm looking for any information on *any* McAndrews families in Nova Scotia. Hopefully if I find them, I'll find her, since it isn't working the other way around! :) While I'm at it, a question: Does anyone on the list have a suggestion where I should be looking for some information on her birth and parents? I've been coming up dry so I figure there must be something I'm missing. Any and all information/suggestions on the family or how to go about finding them would be much appreciated. Looking for two McAndrews: McANDREWS, Mary Jane, b. abt 1844 somewhere in Nova Scotia. m. Richard Hezekiah Bray Rawlings on 1866 and had a load of Rawlings children, which won't put you through again. The other McAndrews: McANDREWS, John, unk date and place of birth. - Had at least two children, Martha McAndrews and Jennie McAndrews. According to an old newspaper article a Rev. Joseph Gaetz of Middleton and Rev JH O'Toole of Lawrenctown presided at his funeral. Unfortunately the family member who clipped the article didn't clip any info that would provide us with the source of the article. Anything anyone might be able to provide would be appreciated. One last one on the Rawlings clan: RAWLINGS, John Nixon, b. 6 May 188, St. John, NB, Canada I've listed the information I have on him below and I'd love ot add to it if possible, but what I really am looking for is information on a South African/Boer War memorial statue located in St. John, NB, Canada. I have a postcard of the statue. A family story says that John Nixon posed for this statue. Does anyone know who the sculptor of the statue was or where records pertaining to it might be located? I'm also interested in any railroad records. Anyway, here's additional info on John Nixon Rawlings: Two tours in British military - 3rd Regiment Canadian Artillery, 1899-1900 - 2nd Mounted Rifles, 1901-1903 Worked as locomotive fireman for Intercolonial Railway in 1903. Hello, I thought I had joined this List last fall or winter in order to find out about the home which Robert CORKILL had lived in in 1901, but I just checked the Archives, and it appears I didn't. I don't have my notes handy, but after a couple years of searching, I finally found Robert CORKILL as an adult. He has in his 30's and living in the home of an elderly gentleman "gentleman farmer" in Belleisle - as a servant. The other day I tried once to find Robert CORKILL in 1911, hoping he was still living in Belleisle, and I was lucky enough to find him. He was again a "servant" and this time living in the home of Abner NEILY, 60. Robert was the youngest of 5 siblings who were "British Home Children," leaving Liverpool in 1874, and each being sent to a different home in Nova Scotia. Robert was .3. and his brother, John, was .5. when they arrived. Their 3 older sisters all married in/near Truro, and had on average 10 children each. But, John didn't marry until later in life (French River), and he married an older woman, and they did not have children. So far, it seems that Robert was still Single in 1911. The census lists him as 47, but he should have been listed as ~40. I was wondering if there were any NEILY researchers and whether or not you know how long Robert lived with that family. I am also curious whether Robert CORKILL remained living in Belleisle until the end of his life, and whether or not anyone knows when Robert died. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

Calnek in his History of Annapolis County, Mentions a Jacob Valentine Troop, born in 1809, who was an M.P.P. in New Brunswick. If he was an M.P.P. in New Brunswick, there may be something at the archives in Fredricton on him. No idea if he was involved in shipbuilding. Calnek says that Valentine Troop married Catherine Church in 1756 in Massachusetts. His saying that Valentine was of German extraction is in error. Savary in his Supplement, says that he was misquoted on this. He supposedly meant that John Troop's wife Hannah Gesner spoke German. Savary says that Valentine Troop was a 'trader' or merchant in Bsoton, and had served with the colonial troops, and was born ca, 1713, per a muster roll. One would suspect that research in New England might be necessary to determine Valentine's origins. My connection to the Troops is through Charlotte Augusta, daughter of of William Henry.
Family stories include a Jacob Troop, of the Valentine Troop family in Annapolis, who became the head of a shipping family in Saint John. Is there anyone detailing the Annapolis Troop or Saint John Troop families who can help me fill in the blanks?
