BOCKMAN/BACKMAN/BAUCHMAN SAUNDERS/SANDERS POOLE These lines moved around Nova Scotia, but all at one time were in Annapolis County. John George BOCKMAN, (b Lunenburg 1817, d 1868) m. Sarah Abigail POOLE (b. Yarmouth 1828 - d Medford MA 1903). Sarah lived in Paradise, Nova Scotia for a while, and probably John George. They had 4 children: Mary Jane (1855-1942), Ada (b 1861), Harriet (b 1862), and unknown. Sarah moved to Massachusetts as a widow, with at least 2 of her daughters in 1873, and lived there the rest of her life, but was buried in Paradise. Mary Jane married James F. KEENE in MA. Her mother (Jane SAUNDERS POOLE 1798-1858) and father (Stephen POOLE abt 1800 - 1860) are also buried there (Evergreen United Baptist Church, West Paradise, Annapolis, NS.) There are a number of BOCKMANs in the same and nearby cemeteries. I would like to find the name of the 4th child of Sarah and John George BOCKMAN, and where John George was buried. Hello Sue:- This is not a roll call memo - your new "caretaker" of the list knows enough about me!!! I have always been fascinated with all the memos from Acadian Recorder and other older newspapers -- how we learn of the past years. Do you have a web page? Or do you wish a home for a list? I am able to offer space on my homepage -- in company with many other Nova Scotian lists. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/ Let me know, please! Muriel M. Hello subscribers, As has been mentioned on this list in previous postings, a copy is at the Digby Museum, and in Annapolis Royal, and of course at the Public Archives in Halifax and many more Historical and Genealogical Societies. It deals with the settlement of Hessian soldiers of the American Revolution in Nova Scotia and contains biographies of 235 such settlers, many from the Bear River area. Therefore it should not be hard to find a copy somewhere, just ask your nearest library. Or if you must have one, ask me. Cheers, John Helmut Merz, also known as the-hessian on eBay.
Hi list, I am researching BURNS, GOLDSMITH, LONGLEY, TUPPER, MCKAY, PALFREY, and related families in Annapolis County. Up till just over 2 years ago, I lived in Halifax [born & raised]. Am now residing in London, Ontario. I also have a site on Rootsweb where I loaded transcriptions from the Acadian Recorder, a Halifax Newspaper in the 1800s. Due the move, and lack of access to the resource the page hasn't been added to for some time. Sue Burns

Hello Listers, I am Christine Joudrey, your new list Admin for Annapolis County, I reside in Guelph Ontario, but know your area of searches very well. I have taken over from your outgoing list Admin John. I, as well as the rest of the listers am sure, wish John a speedy recovery, I certainly hope I can fill John's shoes! A little bit about myself, I lived in the Annapolis Valley, for fourteen years, Kingston to be exact, my husband was in the Canadian Military, stationed in Greenwood. Was fourteen years well spent, in a beautiful area. I worked for Canada Post, and know a lot of the smaller places, also I am familiar with a lot the names that have their roots in Annapolis. The genealogy bug hit me four years ago now. I am Scottish born, and the intrigue of my married name took me on my quest. I thought my married name Joudrey was going to be very hard, but no, was so easy... had been extensively researched,it is a South Shore name, but a lot of where my Joudrey's came from in Lunenburg County, they neighboured on Annapolis County. I knew all the placenames but did not really realize the connection they had to me, some of the places criss-crossed each other. To have researched this was amazing, I can visualise places now, that I travelled through many a time. I still have ties to the area, and visit once a year, during the summer. If I can do anything to help anyone researching this area I will, just ask! For the time being I am going to leave things the way John has everything set up, he has it set up so well that it should run as smooth as ever. What I would appreciate though, is what is called a roll call, just an introduction of who you are, where you are, and what you are looking for. I have been through the archives but have not read everything. To me no question is trivial, nor any tale trivial, so please post your stories. Please, if you have something to say of a personal nature, or an objection about a poster, please do not do it via the list, please do it to me privately, my address will be included below. Remember we are all here to help, not hinder, or make someone feel bad, a genealogical question is never to silly to ask, we were all new at this once upon a time. Hope this lets you get to know me a little better, and if there is something you want to know about me.....ask! Christine Joudrey ccaej@sympatico.ca
Hello Annapolis subscribers; As I had announced earlier this week that I have to transfer the list to a new administrator for health and other reasons, I have found a new host in the person of Christine Joudrey e-mail ccaej@sympatico.ca She has lived in the Annapolis Valley for some time, knows the area very well and can be helpful to our subscribers. She now lives in Guelph, Ontario. But she can tell you her story by herself. I thank you all for your patient with me and the understanding that this list is for genealogy and history, and for accepting the rules of this list as set out in the welcome letter and the taglines. I wish you all the very best, and I will keep in touch occassionally, and will be watching the mail list archives for Hessian queries. Yours John Merz, Hamilton, Ontario. http://home.cogeco.ca/~hessian
A bit long -- but very important - Muriel M. Davidson --------------------- Greetings All I have just finished collating the petitions for the House of Commons that I have received since 23 February 2002. The break down is as follows: Province Previous Current Total ============================== BC 2724 162 2886 AB 5422 348 5770 SK 840 236 1076 MB 447 26 473 ON 2950 922 3872 PQ 807 178 985 NB 541 30 571 NS 745 269 1014 PE 99 0 99 NF 260 0 260 YT 7 0 7 NT 0 0 0 NUN 0 0 0 =============================== Totals 14842 2171 17013 I will be presenting these 2171 signatures to MP Murray Calder while I am in the Ottawa area to attend the first symposium for the Canadian Genealogy Center at the end of the month. Senator Lorna Milne has, as of 8 October 2002, presented 20,109+ Canadian and Non-Resident signatures on petitions to the Senate since the election of November 2000. Prior to the election she had presented more than 6000 signatures. This brings the total number of signatures on our petitions alone, since the November 2000 federal election, to 37,122+ Add to this figure the estimated 16,000 signatures on petitions, letters and email to MPs, and submissions to the Expert Panel on Access of Historical Census Records sent prior to the election of November 2000, we achieve a total of 59,122+ signatures sent to Ottawa. This figure does not include additional unknown numbers of signatures on letters and email sent prior to, or following the November 2000 election, or on petitions not directed through either myself or Muriel before or since that election. Neither does it include signatures on petitions that may have been sent by groups other than the Canada Census Committee. We have no means of tracking numbers of letters or email sent. The announcement on 3 October 2002 that the government intends to bring down legislation relating to public access of Historic Census records does not mean that our efforts are finished. It remains to be seen if such legislation will meet the needs and concerns of those seeking such access. We must keep on top of things to ensure that it does.. We continue to have a need for signatures on petitions. Without knowing the numbers of letters and email sent to individual MPs and Senators, signatures on petitions are the only thing we can point to to show support for our objective. PLEASE send your petitions through Muriel and myself. We are aware of petitions that have been sent directly to some MPs and Senators that have not been presented to their respective Houses. Signatures on these petitions are lost to us. Petitions sent through us are assured of being presented. We need also, to continue seeking support from those MPs and Senators that have given non-committal responses or who have not responded to our questions. Check the Scoreboards on the Post 1901 Census Project website, at the URL following my signature for the tally of MPs and Senators, and their stated positions. With the award today, of a gold tick of support to MP Joe Jordan, 165 MPs have to date stated their support for access to these records so vital to the interests of genealogists and historians. 37 Senators have similarly shown their support. If your own MP or Senator is one of those who do not currently have a gold tick of support, send them a brief, polite request for that support. Remind them that what we seek is public access to Census Records after 1901 on exactly the same basis as we currently have for 235 years of Census records up to 1901. Happy Hunting Gordon A. Hello subscribers, I have been asked what is required to run a mailing list, and this just came through from Rootsweb. I have shortened it a bit to suit our list. As you recall, I have told you that I have to give up the list for health and time reasons, and I would like to turn it over to a knowledgable subscriber of our list not later than by the end of the week. Please let me know privately if you are interested, and have the time to do it. Regards, John Merz From: "RootsWeb Review" < Sent: Wednesday, October 23, 2002 9:09 PM ------------------ 1a. Becoming a Mailing List Administrator. Many RootsWeb volunteers say that serving as a Mailing List administrator adds greatly to the enjoyment of their own research. They also like interacting with and helping fellow online genealogists. No special software or tools are required to serve as a list administrator other than having an e-mail account and having access to the Internet. You are required to: --Maintain a current administrator e-mail contact address on your list tools page (a set of Web-based list management tools that allow you to subscribe or unsubscribe an address, verify whether an address is subscribed, customize list settings, personalize your list's "Welcome" and "Goodbye" letters, and perform other functions). --Subscribe to your list and monitor the posts. --Determine the guidelines for your list. --Keep an eye on bouncing subscriber addresses and remove from the list any that SmartList, the list management software, cannot process automatically. --Read and comply with RootsWeb's Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). You may promote your Mailing List, where appropriate, to encourage others to join, and to introduce topics to generate discussion. You should assist your list subscribers and intervene, if necessary, to resolve any problems that might arise While you have a great deal of leeway in administering a Mailing List you are not allowed to change the overall focus or topic of a list. If you decide to take the plunge and adopt a Mailing List to manage, you will not be alone. You will find many experienced and knowledgeable volunteer Mailing List administrators on the LISTOWNERS-L@rootsweb.com and on the NEWBIE-LISTOWNER-L@rootsweb.com lists who will teach you the ropes and offer advice. <SNIP> * * *
Hello Noel, thank you very much for your kind words. I most certainly will keep an eye on the mail list archive once and a while and try to help and contribure, but .... so far there is nobody interested to take over, although it is really not much work, and actually is great fun communicating with so many nice people. Hello subscribers, After some deliberation, enforced by my wife and my doctor, I have decided to find a new administrator for this list. Please write to me privately if you are interested, and if you have 1.) time and ability to run this list. 2.) knowledge of the area's genealogy and history. I would prefer someone with connections or being active in the Genealogical Society of Annapolis Royal. Please reply not later than Saturday, 26th October 2002. Good luck John Merz (the decision will rest with me)
I am interested in any information on the families of a Catherine GOLDSMITH who was married to an Owen LYNCH. I do not know for certain that they were natives of Nova Scotia but they were said to be sheep farmers in the Annapolis area. Their daughter Suzannah LYNCH ( born c1832) married 1 January 1852 at Annapolis John PATERSON who was in a detachment of the 42nd Regiment (Black Watch) stationed there. They left soon after that for England where John went off to fight in the Crimean War. This family eventually migrated to Australia. Suzannah was reputed to be an excellent horsewoman. There may have been connections with Boston in USA again according to oral tradition. Suzannah was supposed to have had a relative who had a glassworks in a place called Copelands (? William LYNCH Glassworks) in USA. Can anyone shed some light on any of these people please. Anne MAYE in smoky Armidale, NSW, Australia.
