Particularly, that the surname is alterable, and that Nova Scotia genealogical sources should be consulted as well. Thomas The IGI gives Milford Goodwin as a s/o Samuel and Elizabeth (Somers) Goodwin, and to have been b. ca. 1866 in Canada, and m. Canada 1890. A marriage record places that marriage in Westmorland Co., NB. A newspaper announcement has Milford Goodwin, m. the Parsonage, Sackville, Westmorland Co., NB by the Rev. Wm. E. Hall 23DEC1890 Minnie V. Read. Milford was of Port Elgin, Albert Co., NB and Minnie of Bayside, Westmorland Co., NB. The name appears, in the 1851 census, as 'Gooden'. The reason for this is, apparently, because the progenitor of this part of the family, Daniel, wished to avoid certain persons. At: http://www.darkshire.org/~lizzard/geneology/pafn11.htm it is stated that: "Daniel Goodwin was apprenticed at an early age to a shoemaker. The shoemaker's wife ill-used Daniel, and he ran away. He is said at the time to have changed his name to Gooden. All his brothers spelled it "Goodwin". The whole Goodwin family came from Plymouth to Newburyport, Essex, Massachusetts. David and 3 brothers, Enoch, William, and John, enlisted with the 1st Battalion of Governor Shirley's Regiment raised in New England in 1755 to attack Fort Beausejour and Fort Gaspereau and (Fort Mouton or Marston?) Daniel was present at the taking of Quebec (1759)." Thus, the spelling in the census may be deliberate rather than a misunderstood version of the enumerator's. Wilford also appears as Wilfred when his daughter, Annie Pearl Goodwin, d. Wincester, Massachusetts 31JUL1894. Minnie is likely the Minnie A. Reid, b. ca. 1869, d/o Harris H. and Jane Reid of Harvey Parish, Albert Co., NB in the 1881 census. Milford, and his parents, seem absent from NB in 1881; although there are many Goodwin's in Westmorland Co. The 1865 directory does not list a Samuel Goodwin, nor does that for 1867. The directory for 1871 does not list a Samuel Goodwin either. One trace of a Samuel Goodwin in Westmorland Co. is he who co-signed the marriage bond of William A. Barnes and Janie McDougall in 1864. Also, there was the marriage of a daughter: NETTIE MAY GOODWIN m. at her father's residence, Port Elgin, Westmorland Co., NB by the Rev. L. S. Johnson 21JAN1891 THEODORE W. HARTLEY where Nettie is given as the d/o Samuel Goodwin. While there appears to be evidence of the existence of a Samuel Goodwin, the lack of information in the 1881 census is troubling. For example, assuming that, since Wilford/Wilfred was b. ca. 1866, then his father was likely b. ca. 1836, give or take 10 years. Searching for Samuel's b. in that range in Westmorland Co. in 1881 produces no Samuel whose surname might be a variation or misspelling of Goodwin. A large number of Goodwin's b. in that range were in Westmorland Co., NB in 1881. Perhaps noticeable is Albert Goodwin, a blacksmith in Westmorland Parish, Westmorland Co., NB. He was b. NS ca. 1828, has a wife, Eliza (b. NB ca. 1835.) Children are: Clara (27), Bliss (24), Ella (22), Wilford (20), Ettie (17), Florence (15), Frances (12), Alice (8), Harold (7), Carvill (5) and Ethel (3.) It is the children, Wilford and Ettie, who suggest this may be the Samuel sought here. Albert, by JUN1893 when his daughter, Florence, died, had himself died; and had been a resident of Baie Verte. Some information gives Albert's family as: ALBERT D. GOODWIN (GOODEN) (s/o James and Frances (Fillmore) Goodwin) b. NS ca. 1828, d. East Boston, Suffolk Co., MA 12NOV1890 age 62 years, m. ELIZABETH (ELIZA) ANN MURPHY (b. NB ca. 1835.) When Albert died, he left a wife and 11 children. He may have m. a 2nd time as Albert D. Gooden m. Moncton, Westmorland Co., NB by the Rev. D. D. Currie 3AUG1878 Mrs. Elmina Witt. Both were of Moncton at the time. This is more likely Albert D. Godwin b. 20JUN1848 in Moncton in 1901. children: 1. CLARA A. GOODWIN (eldest daughter) b. ca. 1854, m. at the residence of her father, Baie Verte, Westmorland Co., NB (or Hopewell Cape, Albert Co., NB; both locations given in the same source) by the Rev. B. Wilson 25(or 24)SEP1881 WILLIAM HENNIGAR BLACK, s/o George Mason and Sarah (Smith) Black. William was of Dorchester. 2. AMBROSINE GOODWIN (2nd daughter) b. ca. 1855-6, m. 1st by the Rev. J. S. Allen 24DEC1879 RICHARD CATES (CARTER?); m. 2nd CHAPPELL SILLIKER. Richard was of Point de Bute, Westmorland, Ambrosine (Ambrozine?) was of Caie Verte. 3. BLISS GOODWIN b. ca. 1857, d. DEC1886 (as Bliss Gooden) 4. ELLA V. GOODWIN b. ca. 1859, m. at the residence of her father, Baie Verte, Westmorland Co., NB by the Rev. R. Wilson 18OCT1881 JOSEPH R. TAYLOR. Joseph was of Rockland, Westmorland Co., NB when married. 5. Dr. WILFORD (WILFRED) GOODWIN, MD b. ca. 1861. Also given as Wilfred, as Wilfred, s/o Albert Goodwin of Baie Verte when, in the spring of 1888, he was awarded a Doctorate in Medicine by McGill University in Montreal. 6. VIOLETTA (ETTIE) GOODWIN b. 10DEC1864, d. Amherst, Cumberland Co., NS 30NOV1922, m. LEONARD CARTER (b. 21JUN1850, d. 1928), s/o Robert and Phoebe Amanda (King) Carter 7. FLORENCE GOODWIN b. ca. 1866-7, d. at the residence of Joseph R. Taylor, Taylor Village, Westmorland Co., NB 14JUN1893 age 27 years. 8. FRANCES GOODWIN b. ca. 1869, m. Dr. E. A. GOODWIN 9. ALICE GOODWIN b. ca. 1873, m. CHARLES McGINN J. HAROLD GOODWIN b. ca. 1874 K. CARVILL GOODWIN b. ca. 1876 L. ETHEL GOODWIN b. ca. 1878, m. AUSTIN L. WRIGHT A web site on the Goodwin's at: http://www.hayward-logan.com/Goodwin/goodwin.htm is at least partially based on Arthur Owen's, 'Goodwin Family History in New Brunswick', AUG1998, deposited in the PAPEI. This mentions two Samuel's. SAMUEL GOODWIN b. ca. 1788, d. Baie Verte, Westmorland Co., NB 1873 (s/o Daniel and Thames (Palmer) Goodwin), m. KATE MOORE BRUNDAGE. Samuel is also given as possibly James. He appears to be the Samuel 'Gooden' in Sackville, Westmorland Co., NB in the 1861 census, b. ca. 1789, living with James and Elizabeth Read. With him was a son or grandson?, Joseph 'Gooden' b. ca. 1847. This is confused with the information that, in the same census, Christopher and Stewart Goodwin were with their mother and her 3rd husband in Sackville. children: 1. STEWART GOODWIN 2. BULMER GOODWIN b. ca. 1840-5 3. CHRISTOPHER GOODWIN SAMUEL GOODWIN (s/o David William and Elizabeth (Rowley) Goodwin. Arthur's own site, at: http://ourmaritimeties.com/index.php does not appear to contain any immediate, relevant information, although a large segment of the Goodwin family appears. Things change when the spelling, 'Gooden', is considered. In the 1865 directory of Westmorland Co., there are: Gooden, Albert - Baie Verte Westmorland Blacksmith Gooden, Avand - Baie Verte Westmorland Farmer Gooden, Daniel 1st - Baie Verte Westmorland Farmer Gooden, Daniel 2nd - Baie Verte Westmorland Farmer Gooden, David - Baie Verte Westmorland Farmer Gooden, E. C. - Baie Verte Westmorland Trade Gooden, Ebenezer - Baie Verte Westmorland Farmer Gooden, Hazen - Tidnish Ridge Westmorland Farmer Gooden, Henry - Baie Verte Westmorland Farmer Gooden, Henry - Tidnish Ridge Westmorland Farmer Gooden, James - Tidnish Ridge Westmorland Farmer Gooden, Jeremiah - Baie Verte Westmorland Farmer Gooden, John F. - Baie Verte Westmorland Trader Gooden, Joseph - Baie Verte Westmorland Farmer Gooden, Joshua - Baie Verte Westmorland Farmer Gooden, Rufus - Baie Verte Westmorland Farmer Gooden, S. - Port Elgin Westmorland Farmer Gooden, Sampson B. - Baie Verte Westmorland Trader Gooden, Samuel E. - Baie Verte Westmorland Farmer Gooden, Stephen - Port Elgin Westmorland Farmer Gooden, Stephen - Baie Verte Westmorland Trader Gooden, Thomas - Baie Verte Westmorland Farmer Gooden, Wells - Baie Verte Westmorland Farmer Gooden, William - Baie Verte Westmorland Farmer Here is Albert, obviously, later, a 'Goodwin', also a Samuel E. and an S. Gooden. There is a similar list in 1871, including: Gooden, S. B. - Baie Verte Botsford Westmorland Carpenter Gooden, Samuel E. - Baie Verte Botsford Westmorland Farmer The proximity of Baie Verte to Cumberland Co., NS also presents problems, and Samuel E. Gooden is not only not traceable in the 1881 census of NB (even when his surname is altered), but he is actually listed in Amherst Shore, Cumberland Co., NS in that years. Samuel E. Gooden, a farmer, was b. NB ca. 1833. This census, with other information, gives: SAMUEL E. GOODWIN b. NB ca. 1831-3, m. ELIZABETH SOMERS (b. NB ca. 1842.) Samuel may be the Samuel b. ca. 1831 in the family in Westmorland Parish, Westmorland Co., NB in 1851 as: Gooden John M Head 65 American Farmer Birth Gooden Jane F Wife 61 American Birth Gooden Nelson M Son 40 American Birth Gooden Joshua M Son 35 American Birth Gooden Jeremiah M Son 27 American Birth Gooden Elias M Son 24 American Birth Gooden Daniel M Son 21 American Birth Gooden Samuel M Son 20 American Birth Gooden Ann F Daughter 34 American Birth Gooden Adaline F Daughter 12 American Birth According to the IGI, this Samuel was the s/o John and Jane (Polly) Godwin, and m. Elizabeth Goodwin (?). The difficulty with the IGI is that contributors, not knowing the surname of the wife, will enter the maiden name; leading to mistaken conclusions. Otherwise they will enter such nonsense as 'Mrs. Goodwin'; suggesting that the husband married a widow of a relative. The question arise, then, was Elizabeth a cousins with the same surname; or was she Elizabeth with an unknown (to the contributor) maiden name with 'Goodwin' plugged in out of ignorance; or was she actually Elizabeth Somers; and this the Samuel being sought for. Elizabeth Somers may be Elizabeth Somers b. ca. 1858, d/o Theodore (b. 22SEP1828, s/o Martin and Sarah (Trites) Somers) and Elizabeth (Haley, b. ca. 1848) Somers. See: http://www.ourgenealogy.ca/ps03/ps03_167.html http://www.ourgenealogy.ca/wc02/wc02_326.html In Amherst Shore, Cumberland Co., NS in 1881; the spelling of the children's names leaves something to be desired. Milford Gooden (b. ca. 1866) is present in this census. All children are given as b. NB. children: 1. URSULA ('URCILLA') GOODEN b. ca. 1862 2. 'FELVIA' (?) JANE GOODEN b. ca. 1864 3. MILFORD GOODWIN, b. ca. 1866, m. Sackville, NB 23DEC1890 MINNIE VIVIAN REID (b. ca. 1872, d. 1937 4. NETTIE ('ENNETA') MAY GOODWIN m. at her father's residence, Port Elgin, Westmorland Co., NB by the Rev. L. S. Johnson 21JAN1891 THEODORE W. HARTLEY 5. MARY ALICE GOODEN b. ca. 1873 6. JOHN EDWIN GOODEN b. ca. 1875 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
