I have not begun to search for this family in Canada. I am mostly curious to find out if any of these names ring a bell with anyone. My Great-grandmother was Sophia Marie SEELYE. She was born 1843, Saint John, New Brunswick. According to the family legend, her father's name was John SEELYE, no name for mother. John SEELYE and his wife had 3 other children beside Sophia; Harold, Harriet, Amanda who married a Thomas CAMERON. Then the family legend skips a generation...! After the skipped generation the ancestors are supposed to Phoebe LINTON married to Mr. SEELYE. Sophia SEELYE married Colby SMITH,(probably an American) and by at least 1867 they were in Bradley(Penobscot Co)Maine. In 1881 they and their children, Orion,Gertrude (my Grandmother) and Mabel moved to Duluth, Minnesota, USA. I have looked at the 1850,1860,1870 Penobscot County Maine censuses, there is no record of Colby SMITH there. I have also looked at the film of the Penobscot births, which should list my grandmother and her siblings births. No record of these people. I find them in the local census records 1885, 1890,etc) for Duluth and Colby is listed in the 1890 Civil War veterans census...no information, just his name. If any of these surmames are part of your family I would appreciate hearing from you.
