Dear List owner: I am quite puzzled. I submitted a first posting to the list and am receiving responses from individuals who have no information for me as though they did not know the post came from the list. Is this list organized differently from other rootsweb lists? I did not randomly contact people. Thank you for shedding light. I am forwarding this email from a young man to the BALTGEN-L list to all the lists that I have, in the hope that all educators of any type will read it. And hopefully consider giving youngsters some small assignment that sends them to their grandparents and other family members for a possible start on a lifetime love of family research. It so happens that two of my lists are Canadian lists, and members may have very different opinions on the Revolutionary War than Christopher does, but his sentiments about genealogy are why I think his messaget is important. The message directly below, which is above Mr. Smithson's email, is just my response to him. Also joining a Lineage Society like the SAR, DAR, Society of the War of 1812, Society of Colonial Wars and honor the memories of your ancestors and serve in these different organazations that you qualify for. I myself started doing genealogical research at age 8 with my late paternal grandfather here in Harford Co., MD. This research is still with me today not only doing my own family but trying to help others do there research also. At age 13 I became the first student member of the National Genealogical Society. At age 16 I joined the Children of the American Revolution. Between those years I became a member of several other historical and genealogical society like the Harford County Genealogical Society and Historical Society of Harford County... At age 18 when I became old enough I transfered my membership from CAR to the Sons of the American Revolution which I currently hold the office as Chapter President of the Colonel Aqulia Hall Chapter, MD Society SAR and noted as the youngest at age 20 ever to hold this position. I guess my real question is: What will it take to get my generation to become interested in genealogy and the different societies that honor your ancestors memories and the historical events of Americas past. > > This being the 225th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britian during the American Revolution hopefully this will be the year of change of having the younger generation like myself and come forward to honor the memories of there ancestors and enjoy the research that has become one of the biggest.. Eliza Jane MUNFORD (eldest daughter of William MUNFORD) and George R. PARKER were married 8 Jan 1845 according to the information in "Early Marriage Records of NB", supplied by Mr. Friars letter today. This marriage and date was also written in one of my Grandmother's notebooks. Since my 2GGF John MUNFORD was married 3 years later to Frances Allen, I wonder if anyone knows if Eliza Jane MUNFORD had a brother John (and therefore William MUNFORD had a son John)?????. What is the first year of census' that list children's names in Canada? It started in 1850 here in the US. Is there a 1841 census of St. John Co? Happy Hunting! To all members of these lists, including 3 special Canadians, who just went out of their way to help this American stranger, particularly to the member of CAN-NS-CUMBERLAND-L who suggested to me to contact a Mr. Ernest FRIARS, of Wards Creek, NB, and to John COLWELL, a member of the NewBrunswick list, Thank you!!!!! If any of you know how to reach Mr. Friars easily, please tell him "Thank you" from me. I will write him a proper "Thank you" very shortly, but my excitement tonight at finding in the information that he obviously spent hours and hours on for me, a complete stranger, a marriage for my 2GGrandparents, keeps me from waiting. I am practically crying as I write this. I have looked for any piece of information on this couple for 5 years, and in the mail tonight, from two strangers, Mr. Friars and Mr. Colwell, came two pieces of information on them, one a marriage, one a census. You'll are the best! Thank you again. You're a great bunch! Now one question: The marriage was 17 May 1848, the bride was "of Portland", the info came from "Early Marriage Records of NB" by B. Wood-Holt. Is there likely to be a marriage license? Or is there only a marriage bond, which does not include any family info (at least based on the three that I have recieved so far from St. John). The marriage was of John Mumford and Frances Allen, Portland. Hi, My name is Kathy and I am researching my family from St.John, NB. My mother, Alberta (nee METCALFE) NASH, came from Martinon. My maternal grandparents were Catherine V. METCALFE (nee GOODE)-died 1963/St Joseph's Cemetery and Gordon C. METCALFE.-died 1971/Fernhill Cemetery. Paternal ggrandfather was also a Gordon C. METCALF. The "E" was dropped from that generation back.He was from Inverness, Scotland. Ggrandmother was Alberta ANDERSON. Many ANDERSON"S (including my gggrandfather, Renwick M. ANDERSON and Wife Jane (HANLEY) ANDERSON) immigrated from Scotland in the late 1800's. My maternal ggrandparents were William GOOD, (again the "E" was dropped) from Bandon, Cork and Mary Ann MCBRINE/MCBRIDE from St. John. Am looking for info re: William GOOD moving to US, possibly to Worcester MA. Supposedly died in the line of duty as Fireman and anything else about the METCALF/GOOD lineage. Thanks, Kathy --- Kathryn Williams --- kwill9315@earthlink.net --- Albuquerque, NM

Greetings from Australia, I am researching my friend's family whose father came from St John County. Her name is Beverly (BONNELL) Quinn. Bev knows little about her family so we are starting from her father, Henry Nathan BONNELL who was born St John on 6 June about 1907 (year not certain). From the St John county website I have traced Henry's parents' marriage: Fred W BONNELL m. Emma C Makinney; St John; 14 Aug 1894. I have also found some of Henry's siblings: Lulu Chesley BONNELL, b. 9.9.1899, Kings Co. Clayton Oscar BONNELL, b. 10.10.1901 at Westfield, Kings County; Dorothy M BONNELL, b. 15 Nov, 1904, Kings Co.; We believe there was another brother, Monte B BONNELL, but cannot find him in the records. That is the extent of our knowledge, and Bev would love to find out more about her family. If anyone is able to look up records in the area we would very much appreciate it. Thank you Linda Holland

Hello fellow listers: I too would like to say what a wonderful addition this list is. I'm having trouble finding out much about my great grandparents: Joshua Duncan Rolston was born in Saint John in either 1870 or 1872. His parents were John and Eliza(beth), who were born in Ireland. He had siblings Jane, Mary, Margaret, Charlotte, John, Matthew, Sam, Martha. Jane m. a Mr. Dunn, Martha m. a Frank Seeley, Sam m. a Jenny Sproule and Charlotte m. an Albert Carr. Joshua worked for a butcher in the City Market and became disabled when a heavy door fell on his back. He died in 1917. I have been able to obtain copies of his death certificate and burial permit. My great grandmother was Alice Maude Matthews, known as Dovie. She was born in either 1876 or 1878 in Saint John, and died in 1962 in Moncton. The names of her parents are confusing: her obit. says they were William C. Matthews and Mary Jane McAllister, but my mother had also recorded the names Adam Glover Matthews and Elizabeth Jane McAllister. Dovie and Joshua were m. in Waltham, Mass. in 1898, and had 3 children, Margaret Jean (my grandmother), Ronald and John Kenneth, now all deceased. The family lived on Elliott Row in Saint John and attended the Methodist church. If any of these names is familiar to anyone, I'd be very glad to hear from you. Also, can anyone give me any guidance on finding information on the births of my great grandparents--would I have to find church records? Thank you. Liz Brown in Stratford, Ontario
Hi Geoff: My McCallister conection goes a way back to when my Great-Grandfather ANDREW MAHER married a MARJORIE McCALLISTER at Saint Malachy's Roman Catholic Church in Saint John, N.B. on FEB. 14, 1846. I'm afraid that's all I have on the McCallister side of this union, other than to quote hereunder the brief obituary which appeared in the June 15, 1901 Edition on the "New Freeman": "Mrs. M. Maher, relict of Andrew Maher, died on Sunday at her son's "residence, 257 Brussels Street. The deceased lady was a native of "Ireland and resident of St. John for upwards of half a century. "She is survived by two sons, Andrew -(this is my Grand-Father)- a Western "Union lineman, and James, an electrician in Boston. "The funeral took place on Tuesday morning and was very largely attended. "The body was taken to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, where "the prayers for the dead were read by the Rev. Father Poirier. Internment was "made in the old Cathoilc burying ground. (This would be St. Mary's Cemetery) The only additional information I can offer is that their marriage was performed "under license"; not banns, and the recorded witnesses were: Michael Whalen; Eliza Whalen and Daniel Driscoll. I regret that the above is probably not too helpful to your research on the McCallister family of Saint John but if you wish to persue the MAHER side of this union please do not hesitate to contact me as I do have vital statistics, on same, up to the present time. Kindest regards, Pete Maher
