    1. CLARKE family in New Brunswick
    2. anne Clark-Stewart
    3. Dear Bill, I am also searching for CLARKE ancestors and descendants in New Brunswick. Mine are Elisha CLARKE married Desire GARDNER/GARDINER April 10, 1763 in North Kingstown, Washington County, Rhode Island. Came to New Brunswick in 1783 with their children ( not sure how many came with them). Known children all born in North Kingstown: Gardner born June 7, 176? Abigail born April 9, 1767 Jabez born March 19, 1769 ( my 3X great grandfather) Benjamin born Nov 12, 1771 Another two sons, Elisha and Isaac, were born to them, but I don't know where or when in Rhode Island for certain. Elisha must have returned to Rhode Island, as he died there abt 1785. His will was probated on 14 Nov 1785 in North Kingstown RI. Mentioned in the will were his wife Desire, and his sons Gardiner, Elisha, Isaac, Jabez and Benjamin. Also Daughter Abigail and another daughter whose name was illegible. Elisha also mentioned a deceased brother Joseph and land he purchased from a Casy CLARKE and a Cory CLARKE. Do any of these names come up in your family tree??? Another researcher has indicated that there are documents in the Saint John Library: > There is a letter in the vertical files of the Saint John Free Public >> Library by a a person named Sanborn which discusses the Clarke family. It >> refers to Jabez CLARKE as being a Loyalist, son of Elisha Clarke and >> Desire Gardiner. I also have him born abt. Mar 19, 1769, Kingstown, Rhode >> Island. which indicate that Desire was given permission to return to New >> Brunswick with several fo her children. I have not yet seen the full text of >> that document If someone on this list is at the Library, could you please make a copy of the reference? I will be pleased to pay costs for postage and copying. As for the family being Loyalists, another researcher sent me this information: > From the book "History of Queens Co."....... > "CLARK: Elisha,Benjamin,Jabez, Isaac and Gardener, brothers. United Empire > Loyalists, came to Saint John in 1783. The first 3 settled on the River St. > John, back of Long Island. Elisha's wife's maiden name was Catherine SLIPP. > Their children were: Elizabeth (Garrett VANWART); Sarah (Isaac VANWART); > William (Mary CONNOR); Benjamin (Jane SMITH); Hannah (William McLEOD); James > (Jane SMITH); George (Ruth MERRITT); Elisha (Mary Ann VANWART); Mary never > married. William and George are reckoned among the wealthy farmers of Queens > Co." If someone has access to this book, could you please copy out this reference for me? I am willing to pay postage and copying costs. Please contact me if any of these names are in your family background, as I do have information to share on the line of Jabez CLARK/CLARKE and Rebecca BURNEY/BIRNIE, who came to Southern Ontario in 1811 and settled in Wentworth County in 1816. Kindest regards, Anne Clark-Stewart Mississauga, Ontario
