    3. Dear Sheila and other listers, Recently, several people have asked about information on Quebec based genealogical research. I have found that using the regional archives in Quebec has yielded very good results. I would suggest that anyone interested in looking up information on Quebec based ancestors should look at the following web sites: http://www.francogene.com/quebec/libraries.html#anq This site includes addresses for : * Genealogical Societies * Archives nationales du Québec * Recent Vital Records (100 last years) [to get a birth, marriage, or death certificate] * Libraries * Universities and books catalogues * Genealogical books publishers The Quebec regional archives staff are very helpful. Some are bilingual and are quite ready and willing to help you find your Quebec roots. Please remember to be specific with your requests for help, as they are very busy people. The more specific data you can give, the better they will be able to assist. You can write to them in English if your French composition skills are rusty. it just may take a bit longer, as they may have to find someone to translate your letter. I worked with the staff in Montreal, initially sending a fax with my details and then by e-mail. They helped me find a grandmother and several children born there in between sojourns in London and Montreal. The Quebec Family History Society can be contacted through information on their web site: http://www.cam.org/~qfhs/ By reading one of the articles on this site, I discovered the William Notman Photographic Archives in the McCord Museum of Canadian History in Montreal. The core of this collection is the William Notman Collection of 400,000 photographs taken over a period of 78 years, about 1866-1933, which beautifully documents the many changing aspects of Canadian life. The Ne-Do-Ba Genealogy Web site page is great. It can be found at: http://www.avcnet.org/ne-do-ba/web_gene.html It has excellent basic links as well as the following for Canadian & French Research Research: * "Dictionnaire Genealogique des Familles Canadiennes" ON-LINE !! * National Archives of Canada - English * Canadian National Archives Indian Affairs - search * P.R.D.H. Quebec records before 1800 * Aboriginal Peoples Guide to the Records of the Government of Canada * Canadian Genealogy & History * Genealogy of Quebec's Native People and Francophone Metis * The French Connection - Mainer's with Franco Heritage * Catholoic Churches of Maine (A-L) * Catholoic Churches of Maine (M-Z) * Genealogy on the Quebec/Vermont border - article by David Lepitre * The Native Daughters of Jean Nicolet * The Kings Daughters & Carignan-Salieres RegimentGenealogy & History * Quebec & Eastern Townships Genealogy Research Page * Family Roots - Pictou & Antigonish Counties Nova Scotia * American-Canadian Genealogical Society Manchester NH * Maine Franco-American Genealogical Society Lewiston ME * Vermont French-Canadian Genealogical Society * American-French Genealogical Society based in RI * Info on old routes of travel between Canada & Maine History, maps, etc. All of these web sites were found using the Google search engine at http://www.google.ca I always use this site as my first line of research and have found it to be very reliable. remember to take the time to go through each web site methodically, as there are often buried treasures hidden just beneath the surface. I hope you find this helpful with your research.
