I don't have any other info. I"m still trying to find it myself. My GGM was Iva Myrtle Orchard. She married into the Dykeman family. I never knew or met ANY of the Orchards and I know absolutely nothing about them other than what I've learned here and read in that book. I haven't even begun to search for baptismal records or anything yet. I'm still working on all of my other lines in Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York ,etc. This has been one of the hardest lines I've come across yet. Thank you for the info - I have since purchased a copy of this book. The info is invaluable and I thank you for pointing me in the right direction. Do you know if there is a family Bible or church records that this info was originally sourced from, for the children's birth/christening/baptism's as I cannot find a primary source for William's birth/baptism? Unfortunately the info within this book regarding William's - (second son of Lucretia and Robert Orchard) family has several errors, however overall the book has filled in many blanks for me and I thank you for your assistance. My details for William Briggs Orchard's family are as follows: William Briggs Orchard (born May 1836, New Brunswick, died 4 Feb 1904 Brisbane, Queensland) married Alice Curtis Tarrant (born 1842 Mallow, County Cork, Ireland, died 1933 in Gordonvale, Queensland) married in Fitzroy (now Rockhampton) Queensland, Australia 12 Sept 1859. Their children were: 1. William Robert Hiram Richard Fitzroy Briggs Orchard 1861 - 1936 2. George Alfred Thomas Orchard 1862 - 1942 3. Alice Lucretia Ann Orchard 1868 - 1903 4. Henry Oswald Orchard 1871 - 1937 5. Emma Elizabeth White Orchard 1881 - 1968 6. Accidentally I came across her. She was listed under one of her son-in-laws' surname, Colwell. the following may be of interest. Thomas. Gilbert William (William G.) Colwell b. 11OCT1855 (ca. 1856-7), d. 5SEP1933, m. at her father's home, Cambridge Parish, Queens Co., NB 9SEP1880 Harriet Atwood Dykeman (b. ca. 1852), d/o Barnett Manzer and Sophia Dykeman. In 1881, in Cambridge Parish, they had with them a widow, Sophia Colwell (b. ca. 1809). I assume the was William George (or George William) because he lived very close to George William Colwell, Sr. I suspect Sophia may actually be Sophia Dykeman (b. ca. 1809), wife of Barnett M. Dykeman (ca. 1807) in Cambridge Parish in 1871. This would suggest that William's wife, Harriet, was Harriet C. Dykeman (b. ca. 1852) Barnett and Sophia's daughter in 1871, and also that William's brother, James R., m. Rebecca L. Dykeman (ca. 1849), Harriet's sister. A marriage announcement gives Harriet Atwood Dykeman, who m. William Gilbert Colwell, as the d/o B. 'Manzor' Dykeman. James Rainsford Colwell m. 1878 Rebecca Louise Dykeman. d/o B. M. Dykeman, Esq. So, Sophia, in 1881, was Sophia Dykeman and not Sophia Colwell as the enumerator indicated. She would be, from another posting I made earlier, Sophia Beyea (b. 18MAY1808, d. 17DEC1893), d/o James and Martha Curry (Sherwood) Beyea or Belyea. William George (or George William) Colwell was a son of: GEORGE WILLIAM COLWELL b. 4MAR1821, m. SARAH EMILY DYKEMAN (b. Jemseg, Cambridge (Waterborough) Parish, Queens Co., NB ca. 1827-1836, d. White's Cove, Queens Co., NB 16NOV1891 age 65 years), d/o Jacob and Joanna (Springer) Dykeman. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have the names and birth dates of his children if you need them. Also, I have learned that one of his daughters (Alida) married Charles Tupper Knowlton who is on the maternal side of my hubby's family. Robert Jr. lived with them until he died. Family lore has it that the first Ward to arrive in Canada had been a guard at Buckingham Palace who had fallen in love with one of the chamber maids or ladies in waiting. They were not allowed to marry, so emigrated to Canada to begin life together. I haven't found anything more about them, but think it might have been Robert Senior. I have a request in to the Pier 21 researchers to see if they can help. Are you in Nova Scotia? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The Robert Guy Colwell that you refer to here is the son of George Albert Colwell and Margaret Matilda Gibson and is my husbands great uncle. (he remembers him well). My husband's grandfather was James Earl Colwell, brother to Robert Guy. Robert (Bob) lived from 1896 - 1974. He never married and and lived his life on the land next to Earl in Woodstock NB. Robert was drafted to WW I but did not serve as he suffered from significant hearing loss. James was also conscripted late into the war and was training in England when the war ended. Author: tlawther81 Surnames: Colwell / Dykeman Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.newbrunswick.queens/318.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I realize this is many years after your original post but here it goes. I am married to a colwell and have traced his family back to Eunice Ann Dykeman and William Colwell. I am new to this family history obsession but the colwell line seems to be coming quite easily given a lot of the information already on ancestry. The following is from an article I found on ancestry about Garret Dykeman (Eunice Ann's Father) and lists his children. Eunice Ann's marriage to William Colwell is the last line. My Colwell tree lists our branch from William to my husband. Appendix: The Sons and Daughters of Garret and Eunice Dykeman Gilbert Hatfield Dykeman, born in Westchester May 17, 1769, married Dorcas Manzer July 10, 1794, in St. John's Anglican Church in Gagetown. He was almost 25 and she had just turned 17. They had 12 children, eight girls and four boys, between 1795 and 1818. Jacob Wiggins Dykeman, born in Westchester March 4, 1771, married Statira Camp July 27, 1796, in St. John's Anglican Church in Gagetown. She was born in Connecticut, the daughter of Loyalist Abiathar Camp. They had 10 children, five boys and five girls. Without his oldest son, Daniel Lyman Dykeman, who remained in New Brunswick and three children who died young (one boy and two girls), Jacob and his family later moved to Ontario in Canada, where many of his descendants still live. Moses Dykeman, born in Westchester December 31, 1772, married Eunice Phoebe Currie February 13, 1798, in St. John's Anglican Church in Gagetown. He was 26 and she was 18. They had 12 c! hildren, nine boys and three girls. She died November 30, 1845, and he died on April 7, 1850. Joseph Hatfield Dykeman, born in Jemseg, New Brunswick, in November of 1788 and baptized September 11, 1795, married Hannah Flagler. He died in 1855. They were childless. Rebecca Dykeman married Richard Currie. Several Currie family members are buried in the cemetery of St. John's Anglican Church in Gagetown. Anna (Ann) Dykeman was baptized September 11, 1795, in St. John's Anglican Church in Gagetown. On January 3, 1809, she married William Colwell. Author: thomasamurray1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.newbrunswick.queens/142.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I think Archelaus was actually Archibald Ferris who m. Waterborough Parish, Queens Co., NB 8JAN1857 Hannah J. Drillen. In Waterborough Parish in 1871, Hannah (38) was a widow. Children were Martha A. (12), Cordelia V. (10), William A. (6), Melissa L. (5) and Archibald (1). Archibald, Sr. d. MAR1870 while chopping logs near Grand Lake, apparently struck by a falling tree. Hannah (b. ca. 1833) would be Hannah J. Ferris b. Grand Lake ca. 1829, d. Moore St., Saint John 22MAY1894 age 65 years. In Waterborough Parish, in 1861, Archibald was b. ca. 1829 and Hannah was b. ca. 1833, and had Martha Ann (3) and Cornelia Ann (11 months). They lived with his parents, George (ca. 1785) and Jane (ca. 1787) 'Farris' as well as a brother (Oliver ca. 1836) and family and a sister, Mary 'Farris' (ca. 1816). Very near lived the extended family of John (ca. 1783) and Mary (ca. 1785) 'Farris', with John, I would assume, being George's brother. John was b. in New York State, so the family were likely Loyalists. Another sibling of Archibald Ferris was James Henry 'Blizard' (Blizzard) Ferris b. 23OCT1824, baptized in 1825. George and John appears to be sons of another John and Mary and George 'Farris' of Waterborough Parish was baptized as the s/o John and Mary 14AUG1791 and was a sister, Margaret. It is unlikely that these were children of John (b. ca. 1783) so they point to a previous generation. Other baptisms were: Ferris Agnis 4 Sep 1803 Grand Lake Ferris John and Mary By Rev. Or, more likely, to his father, Lt.-Col. Abraham Van Buskirk as at: http://www.royalprovincial.com/military/musters/4njv/njvbuskirk1.htm Anyway, I think he was likely Abraham. Thomas. I just found an obituary in 1853 in NYC that also was sent to New Brunswick and California. To my knowledge, I did not think my Ferris line was outside of NYC. I guess they were sent to the other papers to notify relatives in other locations. Maybe these names will help. I am hoping this new lead can break a brick wall. The names are Elizabeth Perry who married Alonzo Ferris about 1851 in Manhattan. Alonzo Albert Ferris was born in April 1828 in Manhattan to Abijah R. Ferris and Marilla Orton. Abijah and Marilla two other children that I have found: Margaretta and Alpheus. This is where my line ends with any comfortable evidence. Alonzo was a ship carpenter and Abijah was a smith. I saw your posts on another query mentioning the name Aphonso Ferris in New Brunswick . I have to believe this is more than coincidence. Anyhow, I would be happy to share anything I have. In fact, I just happened to write a whole undergraduate paper on her! She is a truly remarkable women, and I've devoted parts of two paragraphs to Catherine in my new book. Are you related to her? I tried to trace her family a while back. I believe she had one son, but that was about as far as I could take it. I never did find her obituary. I don't suppose you've got any wartime pictures of her, do you? In any case, why don't we continue this conversation directly.
